Woodturning - Burly Oak Log

  • One of the last pieces of this oak I have, this ones covered in burls from one end to the other, slightly over seasoned but that just adds to effect, method below.
    Oak treated first to stabilize the wood, this is done using a heat curing resin (Cactus Juice) under vacuum to remove the air, then left overnight to allow the resin to soak in once the vacuum is released, after this its placed in an oven at 92 C for 3 hours to cure. This time I added some colour to the resin to see what effect I could get within the wood, might need a bit more experimenting in this area.
    Next the wood was placed in a mould and normal epoxy resin poured in to bond the two pieces together.
    The rest is just wood turning with a bit of electricity :)

    You know when a surgeon removes a cancerous mass from someone's body, they save it a jar and show it to the patient. If trees got cancer, the burly oak long in the beginning is what the tree doctor would show it's tree patient.
    But in all seriousness, this turned out really well. Keep it up buddy.

    • @MattJordanWoodturning
      @MattJordanWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Jim, I tend to stick to the most popular colours that stand more chance of working with the natural colours of the wood. I normally do a couple of small test pieces away from the camera from off cuts

    @monroe1814 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I truly love your work. I am puzzled by one aspect though, why is there a fascination with using blue dye with the acrylics? Almost all lathe craftsmen use that color. In my opinion any tan variation would go better as a filler. I can't figure it out. Please, I'm not criticizing, I'm just curious why that unnatural color is thought to go well with wood? Thanks for your videos.

    • @MattJordanWoodturning
      @MattJordanWoodturning  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks, I try to use other colours and have done in other videos and other materials with wood. I normally do a small test piece to see what seems (to me) to look the best. With that said it's also been scientifically studied that blue is the most popular colour in western civilisation. From what I can see also is trends, so one TH-camr uses blue, gets loads of views and bang everyone uses it. Same with the river tables, over time trends will change and so will popular colour choices.
