  • Welcome to this weeks woodturning video.
Woodturning - I Maxed Out My Lathe !!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a large spalted beech log into a beaded vase.
When woodturning a piece like I find it important to nibble away at it until I see what shape the wood wants to be, this is what is so enjoyable about woodturning.
If you find these videos entertaining I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.
    Thanks for watching.

This is a great wood project book th-cam.com/users/postUgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L . Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood. The instructions are excellent. The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor. There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood.

It's fun when you get it slowed down just enough that its rotation is roughly a factor of your camera's FPS, so it looks like the block is standing still while you carve into it :)

Yeah can get some great footage with the correct ratio’s. Hard to do it intentionally though as the lathe speed fluctuates as soon as the chisel makes contact 👍🏻😊😉

With as many cross sections you did, I expected a more varied grain pattern in the end, but this project came out awesome all the same. I love watching you use your skew, because that is one lathe chisel I was never able to use effectively back when I was a "junior high aged master lathesman" (age adjusted of course). After clearing the bulk of material with my gouge, my go to for smoothing, even on a straight run, was the roundnose. My instructor was amazed at the smooth lines I could maintain with the roundnose and called me the most skilled tool man he had ever seen, and then laughed at me for not being able to effectively use the proper tool for the job...a skew lol. I have not turned a piece of wood in almost 40 years, but this brought back a lot of fond memories of all the lamps, bowls and other things I made in my early teens.

Jack, as a new wood turner I watched this many (many) times. I was fascinated in the process of building the tenons and putting it all back together. I have now tried this and managed to get a fairly similar end result but my vase is about 10" shorter than yours. Thanks for the help and now I am confident enough to try some of your other projects and a few of my own originals. I am very much enjoying the world of wood turning!

    • @JackMackWoodturning
