I come to watch the videos, I find them amazing and also relaxing, they remind me of my Dad up in his shed working with wood...and then i read the comments, and find myself cracking up laughing at Jack's responses...love it!!!
I always feel that this kind of grain tells a story about the life of that particular tree. It’s a beautiful tale and you translated it well. It ain’t easy being a tree. 🌳 0:16
I'm always excited to see what images I spy in the completed piece. Not disappointed with this one either. Can anyone else see any images?? One clear one is on the inside of the bowl....watch during the rotation. Handsome piece Jack, thank you for sharing.
FINALLY!!! a turner who understands the benefits of 5 mins on the bandsaw to save 30 mins on the lathe.... really nice piece with lots of character. do wonder how you finish the bottom? plate chuck?
Beautiful piece of wood turned into a beautiful bowl, I was reading some of the comments and taught maybe you should have took a little core from the middle but not everyone has a coring system, if i cored every bowl i turned I'd have thousands of them, Great bowl jack and thanks for taking the time to share, Kind regards From Will 😊👍
This shows you don’t want to try to learn from random comments 🤣 The bowl you could core from a bowl like this is hardly worth the time and effort. Vs the great amount of wood shavings I can yield from the centre of this bowl which are way more useful to me than a small dish. Those who say to core a bowl like this obviously have not voted many bowl (or any I’d guess)
Weren’t you afraid of the “defect” in the wood, that it might self destruct the bowl? I saw that, and expected you to use some resin. But what do I know. Haven’t been in wood shop in 56 years. (And then, if we wanted to build an El Toro boat, only one student per class. Otherwise, it was chessboards, mallets, and small furniture.) Thanks for your channel. You do some awesome work.
Really nice looking bowl the beautiful grain stands out nothing more to be said not sure if was possible to core but would have been nice to see two from the same piece of wood but gerat bowl Thanks Jamie
That looks interesting at least. I did not know that's what that shape was essentially called. I've been wanting to do something kind of similar with a somewhat tall Bowl and may give it a try.
Your talent is amazing, truly gifted. What type of wood was that? It must have come from a very old tree Have you ever taken all the different wood shavings and resined them to make something? I've seen the end of year wood block pieces.
Has a nod to the smaller Dublin bay viking bowl but you know that already. I bet you were surprised to find that little extra feature when you cut that blank.
It’s the shape. The Jorvik Viking Center in York, England has numerous Viking age bowls. There’s also a rough carved one that a boy found in 2022 in Norway that is similar in shape.
First left handed turner (at 1:02-1:10) have seen in watching 100+ videos on YT but seems to swap to right handed later in the video. Interested in why the approach.
@That_is_for_me_to_know haha, surely your not turning as a profession, doing a hobby for a life time is very different to a vocation. The hours spent at the lathe would be worlds apart.

Wow. That's some sweet grain. And I was amazed at how fast you went, very efficient. Takes practice to make it look that easy.
A simple form to show off that incredible grain! Thank you, it’s an inspiration!
Wow, that piece of wood has some awesome grain, pure personality. Great bowl.
Beautiful bowl! I really like that you left the natural features as you found them. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Another fine piece of work...the 'Viking' reference, however, escapes me!...thank you...dgp/uk

Very nice, looks like the wood starting moving a bit! Love that look
i like so many others loved the grain of the wood. by going with a simplistic design you only displayed the woods uniqueness. great job
You’ve created a beautiful piece here. Love the natural woods grain and colour. Excellent craftsmanship!
Beautiful wood, beautifully crafted!
Good job Jack beautifully done
FINALLY!!! a turner who understands the benefits of 5 mins on the bandsaw to save 30 mins on the lathe....
really nice piece with lots of character.
do wonder how you finish the bottom? plate chuck?
Most excellent. The grain really went wild around those knots. Made for a beautiful piece. Well done.

That's lovely and I love the colours and markings of the wood.❤❤❤😊
That's an amazing piece of wood, and a gorgeous bowl.
Fantastic grain! So much grain can be concealed inside the wood! 🤯
Love the grain in this piece.
Your blanks always have such nice grain.
Eine wunderschöne Schüssel, toll gemacht. 👏😍
I see the word viking, I click like. This is already going to be awesome.
It's a gorgeous bowl
What a gorgeous piece. The wood grain is amazing. What kind of wood is that?
Nice! Pretty wood grain.
Nicely done!
It's beautiful!
Beautiful piece of wood❤❤
fine work, lovely shape grain pattern 👍👍👍👍
Very nice, I like shape, a beautiful grain.
Great piece ,grain is amazing 🎉❤
No comments it's 😍❤️
❣️Love from India 🇮🇳🐅
I'm not sure why it is a viking bowl but it's quite stunning!
Delicious looking wood . 🪵
À belter Jack ! 👍🏴
Really nice looking bowl the beautiful grain stands out nothing more to be said not sure if was possible to core but would have been nice to see two from the same piece of wood but gerat bowl
Thanks Jamie
`Super👌👌👍👍
EXCELLENT JOB 👍👍👏👏
Gorgemous ❤❤❤
How did it not catch and crack? It’s beautiful
That’s a beauty! What kind of wood is that? It kind of looks like zebra wood.
Beautiful
thanks for sharing
I want to be a Viking......or at least I need a Viking bowl!
That looks interesting at least. I did not know that's what that shape was essentially called. I've been wanting to do something kind of similar with a somewhat tall Bowl and may give it a try.
What wood did you use? The grain just pops out
Good morning Jack, beautiful. The grain is wonderful, there's a knot section and smooth heart grain. Is that wood considered soft wood.
Your talent is amazing, truly gifted. What type of wood was that? It must have come from a very old tree
Have you ever taken all the different wood shavings and resined them to make something? I've seen the end of year wood block pieces.
Nice work. Is this a production item for you?
That's nice dear
Hehe. Dang I wish I had lots of cash.
Me too!
Just a bowl. Nice looking that it is, it's just a bowl.
Has a nod to the smaller Dublin bay viking bowl but you know that already. I bet you were surprised to find that little extra feature when you cut that blank.
Excellent job. What wood is he using?
This is Ash
What's Viking about it?
It’s the shape. The Jorvik Viking Center in York, England has numerous Viking age bowls. There’s also a rough carved one that a boy found in 2022 in Norway that is similar in shape.
Everyone knows Viking ate huge bowls of lucky charms every morning.
@@jacobdean1454😂
The wood came from Yggdrasyl!
First left handed turner (at 1:02-1:10) have seen in watching 100+ videos on YT but seems to swap to right handed later in the video.
Interested in why the approach.
I hold the tool in the way that is most appropriate for the cut.
@@JackMackWoodturning Must have practiced a lot. I certainly wouldn’t feel confident doing a roughing cut using my non-preferred hand.
@That_is_for_me_to_know Iv practiced 8-10 hours a day 5 days a week for the last 23 years 🤣
@@JackMackWoodturning You just beat my experience by 22 years!🥴
@That_is_for_me_to_know haha, surely your not turning as a profession, doing a hobby for a life time is very different to a vocation. The hours spent at the lathe would be worlds apart.
Thanks 👍
Nice grain. What's the moisture content of what you turn? Also what do you use for finish?
Hi Jack. What is the wood you are using. I really like it's grain.
Nicely done but what exactly is "Viking Style"?
Look up Glen Lucas for the authentic Dublin Viking bowl
Das ist eine schöne Schüssel geworden, leider aber kaputt.
❤️❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
What is your finish?
Why not seal that hole so it could have a true use other than art.
@@orlandl.blanchard5423 what do
You have in mind ? Soup?
@@JackMackWoodturning No . There are other foods that are eaten in a bowl.
An example??
i Why not core a piece this large instead of wasteing all the wood into mulch. It just feels like such a waste and disrespectful to the wood.
A smarter guy would get two bowls from that blank
Patch the hole???
Why would that be the direction a “smarter guy” would take?
