As we continue to cover the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, we speak with Manuel Ivan Guerrero, a freshman at the University of Central Florida and an organizer with the Sunrise Movement, who says young people are extremely worried about the impact of the climate crisis on their communities. "This just has me more scared for what the future's going to look like in Florida," he says. "We're having these thousand-year storms every three, four years now."
We also speak with David Wallace-Wells, a writer for The New York Times opinion section and a columnist for The New York Times Magazine, where he frequently writes about climate. He says the popularity of conspiracy theories during extreme weather events shows that many people are retreating "into little cocoons of disinformation and paranoia, and that scares me in some ways even more than the weather itself."

The problem is that oil companies and arms manufacturers are the most profitable companies in the US. And, since the Supreme Court ruled that corporations are people and that unlimited political bribery of politicians is free speech, the oil and arms companies write the laws and policies in the US. In the US, only billionaires and huge corporations matter. We the People only have value as slaves.
Except for the vote. We can become political candidates, and there are some very committed representatives right now who aren't on any lobbyists' payroll. People get blasé and think democracy exists without their participation. Eighty-one million eligible voters did NOT vote in the 2020 general election! That's the second largest group of eligible voters in the U.S., after the 81.2 million who voted for Biden/Harris in 2020. "Demos" means the common people. American oligarchs know this is the one thing that keeps their class from ruling completely and they are working on ways to change the one person, one vote system (see the 2005 Citibank memo). One way is to demoralize the citizenry. Unfortunately, their efforts are working.
You want better candidates, find someone honest to support. Better yet become one yourself.

The nytimes guest neglects & ignores the fact that the rescue response from FEMA and military was absolutely incompetent and late.
There was NO rescue helicopters on Day 1.
We didn’t see one until 4 days later!
how can this guest say the FEMA response was good? It has all been civilian volunteers - no FEMA presence in Bakersville or Brunsville or Spruce Pine.
the biggest need was rescue helicopters. even after day 4, more civilian helicopters helped than the govt-military helicopters. it shouldn't take 4 days for military rescue helicopters to arrive. notice, neither Democracy Now nor any legacy media showed you ANY videos of govt rescue helicopters on first few days of the hurricane disaster. bc there were none. let’s not forget, Tennessee had 700 of its national guard deployed to the middle east, just as the hurricane destroyed Eastern Tennessee. The real issue is not the FEMA funding - the real issues is late rescue helicopter response & late on-the-ground govt human help.
in regards to the FEMA fund: “FEMA has a separate disaster fund” / “republicans blocked funding of FEMA disaster fund” - these are strawman. FEMA’s budgets all come from one same pool: taxpayers. First of all, FEMA shouldn’t be handling immigration issue (thus no real need to have separate funds, it should all just be one natural disaster fund), and even if FEMA is assigned for immigration issues, FEMA shouldn’t be allocating money at that large scale had the govt controlled the border issue. and while Biden can summon the Congress to pass the aid package to Lebanon in one day, how come he can’t summon the Congress to pass an immediate aid package for hurricane victims?

To help with climate change, the current administration promotes climate refugees. How does this make sense. Take people from countries where they produce almost no carbon gasses and move them to a country where they produce 10 times more. 300 million extra tons of carbon gasses in the world every year from immigration to the US. Thank you for talking about the situation worldwide. Nepalis such a tiny country and has undeveloped infrastructure and no resources. People will have completely lost their homes.They will have no money given to them to start over. There will be no food given. This is the reality. and The US and it's fossil fuel industry are to be held accountable. But they won't be.... As a Californian who lost a home to wild fire, after paying insurance over 30 years, they absolutely wont pay enough to replace your home. @@nomnomyam9379 Wind speed determines the category, but the category is totally inadequate and extremely misleading in describing the overall power of a hurricane. The amount of moisture it carries, the overall size. The old style hurricanes were all about wind damage. Now flooding is what is trumping wind damage. Plus the latest one was so powerful it was spawning it's own tornado microclimate
I think $300 or or $3000,00 for gas & Hotel expenses is low balling, they should be getting $500,00 for gas, and $5000,00 for hotel expenses, life isn't cheap anymore. The higher the number you put on it, they will complain anyways, that's the new cost of living on this planet.
In these new architectural plans for homes in the future, is now, and they must include 8' - 10' (feet) above ground level first floors, along with dome shaped roof and environmental contamination rooms for nuclear fallout. This is a big business and and economy boosting era. It is an incentive for current homes to modify, and new construction designs incentive to buy.
Garages can have separate small designs that can double as a solar panel cropping, and they can be connected to homes but also enjoy elevated constructions above ground level.
These suggestions are not to be funny, they are possible and the United States is behind the curve and nothing in the pipeline, despite these being repeated.

Getting my mail in ballot today in Ohio. A really weird feeling. Since the democrats and Republicans have worked together to assure no candidates get on the ballot, they have forced our hand to 2 shitty choices while calling it a free democracy. I'm voting with my wife today and I know what I have to do. This is the narrative, not the truth. Fossil fuel usage make up 75% of greenhouse gases and nearly 90% carbon dioxide emissions. Often much easier to attack the farmers than the oil/gas/coal giants though. Not saying eating less or no meat won’t help, but it’ll also help to walk where you can instead of hopping in your car.

All these future projections look pretty grim but what is happening right now is hard to ignore. Now that hurricanes are averaging cat 5 and dumping 3 feet of rain in a span of mere hours how is that survivable? So people are expected to rebuild every year now? That's ridiculous. Analysis of the data from weather stations across Florida, shows Milton made landfall with an average wind speed of 67 mph, making it a tropical storm, the wind was 47 mph under what the National Hurricane Center was reporting, the furthermost station reported off of Venice reported 78 mph winds, which would hardly make it a Category 1 Hurricane. The University of Alabama at Huntsville mobile research unit recorded winds at 60 mph when Helene made landfall. There has been no increase in the intensity of hurricanes hitting the U.S, or number of them, in fact the number making landfall has decreased dramatically since the 1940s. There has been no increase in extreme weather events in the U.S since 1900, or even further if you go back to the end of the "Little ice Age"...... the climate changes...... there is no "Climate Crisis"

This was the largest recorded volcanic eruption since we've been able to measure volcanos. Normally when volcanoes blow up they spew out sulfur dioxide which cools the atmosphere, but because it was under the ocean it shot a massive amount of water vapor into the atmosphere that's going to affect the climate for the next few years. This is not caused by the miniscule amount of carbon dioxide that man puts into the atmosphere compared to what nature puts into the atmosphere.
