I have developed terrible neuropathy during my treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma. Climbing stairs has become a tremendous challenge despite having been an active 47-year-old prior to this. I noticed a few months into treatment that my feet were not lifting as much as I walked and that I would trip over cracks in the sidewalk. I have been so frustrated that I have developed drop foot as well. Today I received trekking poles that I ordered to give me more support so I can walk with some more confidence. My husband found your video on trekking poles to teach me how to use them. I have now gone down the rabbit hole of watching many of your videos. Thank you for sharing this information on TH-cam to help others like me.
My kid’s dad had the same issue during treatment for a brain tumor. We never figured out if it was a neurological thing or from treatment. For about a month he could only slide but after treatment it did improve, where no other neurological symptoms did. He walked almost normally for a while after, so there is some hope. Good luck

Thanks, guys! I needed this! I’m 66 and for many years the joke about me is that I can trip on air. I did a face- first splat on smooth tile floor (no injuries other than my dignity) and FINALLY realized that I have a little bit of foot drop in my left foot! Now, when I walk, I recite “heel, toe, heel, toe”to myself.
I was involved in a severe car accident in 1993. I had a TBI on the left side of my body. This affected my right side. I had drop foot because of it. I went through therapy and got better at walking. As the years passed I struggled with depression and weight gain. This caused me to go back to old habits. I have lost 50 pounds leaving me 25 more to reach my goal. I have been falling and tripping so I am going to use your advice to help me stop falling. Thanks.
Wish I had seen this last month. I had a bad fall last week. 100% because of the way I walk. I also now know why I have an ache at the front of my right leg. I do love you guys but I am 65 and everytime I watch you I have to add another few exercises to my day😂
I had a TKR in January and prior to that had been on crutches. I have not heard of this but took a nasty fall a couple of days ago. Face planted on the sidewalk. I will start doing these as I have noticed that I felt like I was stumbling over my own feet. I’m very sure this is why I fell. Thank you for sharing this information with all of us! AMEN for special people like you! You really do care about your patients! Thanks!
This is fantastic advice for seniors to improve walking and minimize falls. 3 - 4 days a week I would walk at least 2 miles in my neighborhood for exercise. One afternoon I tripped while power walking and was injured. Luckily I did not break any bones, but the fear of another dalk kept me from walking for exercise again. I became acutely aware of my walking and determined I was not picking up my right foot enough and causing me to trip. I will do the recommended exercise and post again after a month to report if my walking has improved. Great video.
About 90% of my geriatric patients have a difficult time with a heel to toe gait pattern . This is an excellent exercise to help prevent a shuffling, flat-foot gait pattern that almost always leads to falls.
Thanks . I am 72 and have recently developed what I only now know is drop foot . I will start this therapy today . I am confident it will be very beneficial. Thanks again for this video which has been so timely .
Wow: You guys nailed it! Years before recent hip replacement, I’ve been asking physical therapists to help me understand and correct my perception of uneven gait. Since surgery and walking for exercise I have realized that the toes of foot opposite surgical leg are profoundly weak and cannot bear my weight as I step forward with it. This week I brought this fact to PT and was given standing heel raises. I’m sure this will help too, but am amazed and thankful that you have presented this video. I’m on it❣️
I had muscle weakness /drop foot due to trapped nerves, spinal issues & I kept falling/tripping over. I was given loads of PT exercises but not this one. I’ll try this thanks guys!🙌🏼
I have foot drop as the result of a hip replacement. The good news is that it's coming back so these exercises are just what I have been looking for to get my strenght back. Thank you!

Another tip I would give is to walk slower. The times I fell, I was rushing to get somewhere and didn’t pay attention to what was in front of me. I stepped in a hole at the park. I tripped over a wagon handle when doing home repairs. I rushed and fell when the dog wrapped her leash around my legs. Look down.
I recently watched another video on this very topic/exercise(s). I was not uncomfortable doing all the way to advanced (thank you snowshoeing I think) BUT I had noticed that walking on game trails on my rural property I was "stubbing my toes" more. Just being aware helped me to adjust to picking up my toes and what a difference. I am nearly 68 but walk on game trails (uneven ground, rocks, roots, downfall) 2 plus miles daily and this past winter with excellent snow (NW Montana), I snowshoed the same distance. At any rate, I think both muscle strength AND in my case awareness are crucial - thank you!!
I am so glad to have found this exercise, and your channel. I teach a Balance Class at a Seniors’ Centre where I volunteer. Most of my class are sort of in between when it comes to this exercise: the standing version would be a bit too challenging for many of them, but few of them will have a walking stick at home just yet. So, I’m suggesting that they loop a leather belt or an resistance band around their foot to lift it instead. I’ve tried that out myself and it seems to work well.
Excellent exercise for this muscle, guys. I've been walking 10Ks a day for 20+ years (I'm 57) and have never paid attention to this muscle, and now that I think of it I do have occasional pain there, in one leg mostly. So I think my gait is off too. I will start doing these and work on my gait. Thanks for making me aware. You guys are amazing. Lots of love to you guys, and Bob, of course!
Thank you so much guys 😊 . This exercise is exactly what I needed to do to strengthen my gait. I had a knee injury a few months ago and I’m still working on my walking normally . I was doing calf exercises, now I’m adding these ones as well 😅.
❤❤❤thank you. I have this issue at 58. Im so thankful for all that ya'll do to help people. I will be doing this to improve my walking it has changed drastically. How is Bob? Sending love and healing vibes to him and his family. ❤❤❤🎉🎉

Thank you so much for this info I started limping about 5 years ago now I can not use my left leg for walking thinking this might be one of the reasons for my leg weakness sending some love to Bob ❤❤❤
I wish walking with lifting the foot upwards, had been demonstrated at the end. At what point in a stride do I lift the front of my foot up. I am starting to “ foot drag” my left foot. These videos help me so much. The modifications shown, are always super helpful!
I had three back surgeries in the 80s. At one point, my left leg dragged. After intense PT, I recovered nicely. But I noticed if I'm walking at the gym, I sometimes catch my toe as I walk. I'm thinking I'm not lifting my leg enough. Also, if I'm tired, that left leg tends to drag. These exercises seem to be something I need to do. My husband is 78 and suffers from stenosis/scoliosis of the spine. He tends to shuffle. He has also had total replacement knee surgery on both knees this past year. I do believe the exercises you shared about using the cane will help him. Thank you for making this video.
As a person with MS who tends to have a little drop foot on the right when I've walked too much or my heat sensitivity (like the 100 degree days we've had lately), I needed to see this now. Thank you guys!
Wow, great info here. As an older individual who has started to trip a bit , I found an exercise a while back that did the tibialis anterior and the hip flexor (two-part exercise). This stuff you're showing looks like the next step (no pun intended) for me. Thanks for the video!
@@enigma_-_79 ha ha yes I was just showing that you can get over foot drop. I was told to have my ankle fixed via surgery but managed to get my nerves stimulated and once I gained movement I exercised the heck out of my ankle, using exercises similar to Bob and Brad. I'm sitting here presently looking at my mountain planned for tomorrow. 🤣
I never heard of this muscle and its importance in walking but sure enough I slap my foot down with little work using the heel. The 1st time I tried your exercise standing, my upper foot was only able to go up less than an inch! Thank you so much for this incredibly important info! I'm 69 & spend a lot of time lying down because of serious back pain. My legs are really weak.
Thanks!! I've been exercising for my knees for a year with moderate results. A couple days of doing this and feeling a lot better!! Will put them all together and think on the road to recovery. Again thank you so much for all that you do.
I have sciatic nerve damage that has affected both my legs, though predominantly my right leg. I have had pain in the tibias anterior muscle mentioned for years, and I do, indeed, have difficulty lifting my right foot at times. I have tripped more times than I care to count. Thank you for this video.
10 years ago I hurt my back and ended up with a herniated disc. I had surgery to correct it because it resulted in drop foot. my husband called me "thumper" because he could hear the "slap" of my foot on the floor. I also had my walk videoed at a shoe store as part of buying goood walking shoes. I was shocked to see my right foot swing out to the right as I walked. No wonder I was developing a callus on the left of my big toe.!! After PT and surgery I am MUCH better but there is still weakness in lifting my toes up as I walk and find myself tripping at times. Thank you soooooo much for this exercise!! I will add it to my list of strength training exercises.
Im 60 years old and I renently fell. Thank The Most High, I only scrapped my knee and hand. I shutter to think it i had fallen on my hip😱 I started doing the legs against the wall stretch everday for 15 to 20 minutes a day. The sciatica pain in my lower back and legs are gone. My gait has improved tremendously.
This does really work. I found myself tripping over things that I couldn’t believe I did and stubbing my toes (yeah, IK, I’m a southerner and walk barefoot a lot). The 3rd day of managing 20 on the wall, already huuuuge difference. That’s what I like to see, quick results. IK it’s not always possible but it’s certainly a motivator to keep doing it. Great tutorial gents!
Ten months ago I did the “ trip over my own feet and fall “ thing. Slammed my shoulder into a door frame, then fell onto bare hardwood floor. Total reverse shoulder replacement. Wish I had seen this a year ago….maybe this exercise might have saved me!
Me too; had a fall on hardwood floor; tripped over my own feet and a broomstick. Hit my shoulder and knees hard. Ended up with rotator cuff and bicep tear. 6 mos after that successful surgery, had to have lumbar fusion surgery, so now my formerly active walking life is back to zero and I appreciate the advice on getting back in shape. I’m at nearly at week 6, post back surgery. This is hard
As a fencer, I was taught to lift my forward toe and kick the foot forward then bring the rear foot up and repeat. I recently noticed myself tripping as I walk. Watching this I thought back and it is always my left toe (rear foot). I checked the muscle left vs right tib. and the left is not very well developed. I will now work on strengthening my left side. Thanks for this video.
I have Grave's disease. Among the many other problems is muscle weakness. I had noticed that I was slapping my feet when walking, but didn't know there was anything I could do about it. Thank you so much for showing this!
I notice that when I walk slowly like in a store shopping, my back starts to hurt. I'd like to see a video to strengthen the muscles which would help my back. Thanks.
Simple exercise. We have awful sidewalks but my step has gotten too low. Tripped and broke hand 2 years ago. Could have been so much worse. I walk with a hiking pole for sidewalk focus. This exercise could help me if I keep at it.
Hiking poles are an excellent idea. I use a custom made wading staff. Fly fishermen sometimes use these for stability when boulder hopping along a stream. Mine are Oregon myrtle saplings. Great wood. For tips and stability they have a carbide tip epoxied on the end.
Thanks as always guys! Ive noticed this year when Im out for my walks, at least once or twice I notice a scuff, this could be why. Is this the shin splint muscle? I got those when younger & then in my 49's I'd strainn my calf once in a while. Im turning 50 this summer, Ive battled hashimotos & multiple spinal injuries for most my life. So that phrase a body in motion stays in motion has never applied more than now to me 🙃 We're blessed to have you guys along side us as we get on in years!! 😃
OMG!! I cant believe the perfect timing of this video. My mom definitely has the senior shuffle. She has had many falls in the last 10 year. But sadly more so in the last yr. 5 falls since Nov, 3 in the last 30 days. She is seeing PT for lymphedema but also balance and vertigo. She has a shuffle but also can not navigate well around small obstacles such thresholds or carpet to flooring or vice versa. It's like her brain can quickly accept a flooring difference or small bumps in the sidewalk. It's so hard to figure out what to address first
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed. I was aware that I’m not lifting my left foot and yes, it has caused me to stumble. Will start these exercises today
Everyone please remember to always wear shoes appropriate for what you're doing and any medical conditions you might have. The right shoes make a big difference in avoiding tripping, falling and injuring your feet.
I have left foot drop due to a crushing injury of my left leg and have had to work on this leg because of catching my toes while walking. I had severed my right Achilles then 18 months later was in a motor vehicle accident and had the crushing injury to my left leg. I will have to incorporate these exercises into my vibration plate which has helped immensely ( it has made me feel so much better).
Thx so much for this video! I have been catching my toe on my right foot. I will start these & get strength back!! 😊 I just want to walk better!!❤ you're great video's really are encouraging!! 😊
This is wonderful! I have neuropathy (no pain, just numbness), and I can walk ok indoors, but outdoors I need a walker as I have awful balance. I have gone to PT and that has done wonders, but my motor nerves in my left leg are affected too, which makes walking a little more difficult. I'm hoping this exercise will make things a little better for me!
I trip occasionally with my right foot while walking and nearly face plant every time it happens. I always thought it was because of my shoes or I wasn't lifting my right foot high enough when I was walking; I never thought it could be a muscle by my shin. I'm going to try these exercises and see if they help.
Great advice, easy to follow and very useful for me at a slightly younger age with too much siting and my mum who needs a place to start. We miss Bob though. Sending love.
Thank you for this message! As a result of a brain tumor and radiation, I drag my left leg when I’m tired. Thanks for the tips on strengthening my leg.
At 64, I still run some and my running style is mid-fore foot. But I do notice I the front of my shoes grind against the pavement as I bring my feet forward sometimes, especially as I get more tired. Thanks for the muscle strengthening exercises.
I'm 34 yo now but had my right big toe fused together at age 27 because the joint had become so damaged from a super rare metabolic bone disease .. I don't think I really had much of a choice at the time (they offered a joint replacement but joint replacements in the big toe very often fail every few years because of all the load being placed on them). But I feel like that fused toe is going to affect my body for the rest of my life :/ every day so many muscles in my forefoot and leg get so tight and sore from compensating for that toe but I am now excited to try these exercises, thank you
Trying to conservatively recover from runners knee for 1 year now after several issues that led me bedrested. Adding this to my knee exercise workout since it helps with walking alltogether!
I have a fallen arch for which surgery was a failure. My gait is a joke & I’ve fallen several times due to toe drag. I’m looking forward to trying your anterior tibial strengthening exercise. My P T will be thrilled if successful. Thank you.
My mother-in-law always dragged her feet when she walked. I first met her when she was 53, and I thought it was odd at that time to see someone at her young age dragging her heals. My husband said that’s the way she always walked. Flash forward to her at age 83, when she moved into a retiree residential living facility after my father-in-law died. She represented a great ‘trip and fall hazard’ to the facility, so she was immediately paired with a physical therapist who taught her how to properly walk. It took more than 2 weeks of dedicated effort, but it worked. We also changed out all of her shoes to practical, yet stylish, supportive shoes so that she would not hook her shoe heels on rugs, carpeting, or stairs anymore. Yes, she was one of those ‘ladies’ who wore high heals, then low heal slip-ons most of her adult life, as she told us “the heels accentuate my legs so much better than flats or athletic shoes”. Yeah, bunions were a big issue, too.
Ya my mom's in a nursing home and bunions too, their physio therapist got her to chuck her much loved wrap around soft slippers and bought her proper orthotic shoes, mom's almost 85!
Thank you for an informative video. I started PT about 5 weeks ago and am disappointed. No explanations or education about the "therapy exercises." Your video actually shows what to do and why, not just telling me what to do. Very helpful.

Your easy tips for leg strengthening is very important for me. Please continue with your daily dose of easy exercises. Thanks.
We will!! Thank you for watching!
Wonderful!
You are very welcome, we are so happy we can help
Thank you for assisting many of us need your help and kindness, 💯
Thank you for all you to improve my walk. I need all the help I can get. I look forward to more exercises. 😊
We are happy to help!
Thanks Brad and Mike❤
Great advice. Thanks. Please convey warm best wishes to Brad. Miss him.
Great teaching and demos! Advanced and modified exercises are great!
Thanks!
Love ya Bob !
This happened to me at church. Wehave been chosen to move on a differemt path. Glad for your grace,it inspires me.
I don’t see another video here. The first one was GREAT!! Thank you SO MUCH❤️
Thanks for this. I've been dragging my left toe walking. This helps.
Thank you! I have MD2 and I watch your videos for help in improving my walking!
Great video! Thanks guys!👍
Glad you liked it!
I try to remember the points you bring up, so whenever I walk or sit or go up and down stairs or do yardwork I'm very careful!!!!
A
Ways tripping on my one foot…no one ever talked about this exercise…thanks!
Perfect timing on this, I doing PT for a broken tibia and fibula.
Excellent demo and teaching. Thank you so much.
Oh, we're so sorry to hear that!
Me too.
Happy to help!
I notice that when I walk slowly like in a store shopping, my back starts to hurt. I'd like to see a video to strengthen the muscles which would help my back. Thanks.
We will add this to our to do list!
Simple exercise. We have awful sidewalks but my step has gotten too low. Tripped and broke hand 2 years ago. Could have been so much worse. I walk with a hiking pole for sidewalk focus. This exercise could help me if I keep at it.
Happy to be able to help! Be careful on those sidewalks!
Hiking poles are an excellent idea. I use a custom made wading staff. Fly fishermen sometimes use these for stability when boulder hopping along a stream. Mine are Oregon myrtle saplings. Great wood. For tips and stability they have a carbide tip epoxied on the end.
Sending Bob lot of positivity nd prayers from India
Thanks as always guys!
Ive noticed this year when Im out for my walks, at least once or twice I notice a scuff, this could be why. Is this the shin splint muscle? I got those when younger & then in my 49's I'd strainn my calf once in a while.
Im turning 50 this summer, Ive battled hashimotos & multiple spinal injuries for most my life. So that phrase a body in motion stays in motion has never applied more than now to me 🙃
We're blessed to have you guys along side us as we get on in years!! 😃
That's great! Thank you very much 😊
No problem!
It's so hard to figure out what to address first
Sorry I meant her brain "can't " ...
Thanks guys... your videos are always on time.❤
Thanks for watching!
Excellent advice for people of any age
Thank you. This is exactly what I needed. I was aware that I’m not lifting my left foot and yes, it has caused me to stumble. Will start these exercises today
Good luck!
I have hyperextended knee with my ms. I hope I can incorporate this into my exercise.
Best of luck!
I really needed this today! I have tendinitis and struggle with my rehab after a surgery and My proprioception was affected. Thank you! 😊
Excellent video. Thanks for input!
You're welcome!
Everyone please remember to always wear shoes appropriate for what you're doing and any medical conditions you might have. The right shoes make a big difference in avoiding tripping, falling and injuring your feet.
Agreed! I have to wear relatively thin soled shoes.
Hopefully they help you!!
Perfect and simple. Thank you!
You are very welcome!
Excellent video! Thank you for sharing such valuable information !! Can't wait to start! Thank you for doing a great job
Thx so much for this video! I have been catching my toe on my right foot. I will start these & get strength back!! 😊 I just want to walk better!!❤ you're great video's really are encouraging!! 😊
Perfect timing. I have foot drop, gait & balance issues. I'll give this a try
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for this message! As a result of a brain tumor and radiation, I drag my left leg when I’m tired. Thanks for the tips on strengthening my leg.
This is helpful gonna try this technique to improve my walking
Yes! Good luck!
Thank you for this very helpful information!
Bravo, guys! Superb vid and excellent, clear tutorial. Much appreciation!
Good luck!
I have a fallen arch for which surgery was a failure. My gait is a joke & I’ve fallen several times due to toe drag. I’m looking forward to trying your anterior tibial strengthening exercise. My P T will be thrilled if successful. Thank you.
Hows Bob ? Hope he’s keeping ok . I miss seeing you both together. Used make me laugh and all the help you give I really appreciate you. Thank you
My mother-in-law always dragged her feet when she walked.
Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for an informative video. I started PT about 5 weeks ago and am disappointed. No explanations or education about the "therapy exercises." Your video actually shows what to do and why, not just telling me what to do. Very helpful.
