  • Foliage is a really important part of a flower arrangement. I am always looking to see what I can use at different times of the year in my bouquets and what will hold up well in a vase. This week we look at good foliage you can cut from the shrubs in your garden for arranging in the autumn and tips on conditioning.
Foliage I am using in my autumn arrangements:
    Physocarpus nine bark
    Physocarpus darts gold
    Privet
    Hypericum
    Chaenomeles speciosa (Japanese quince)
    Garrya Elliptica (Silk Tassel Bush)
    Aster Foliage
    Skimmia Japonica Rubella
    Cotoneaster

Lots of lovely foliage to choose from. The Silk Tassel bush is amazing with those lovely catkins not seen that one before, on my list to purchase. Also love the Skimmia Japonica Rubella lots of interest perfect for Christmas. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks for watching 😊 The silk tassel bush is a great shrub to have in your garden. The catkins are fantastic at this time of year.

Lovely foliage. I don't have too much in my garden but on the road I live on there is lots of Ivy with lovely seed heads.

Thank you, I know the ivy you mean with the seed heads. There is some growing in a garden hedge at the top of our road and it’s lovely at this time of year.

This is such a brilliant video, thank you so much for taking the time and sharing your knowledge. It is my first year and foliage is something I really wanted advice on as I think I should be planting that as soon as I can to have time to grow it to cutting size. I really appreciate this video 😊

Thanks Caroline. I hope you have had a great first growing season. It’s definitely a good idea to plant foliage shrubs as soon as you can to get some established for cutting. Hoping I can do a couple more videos in the spring and summer next year about the varieties of foliage I use then too x

Good one Catherine. I read also that you should aim for 50% "foliage" in your annuals too (eg bells of Ireland, cosmos foliage, bupleurum etc). I've got physocarpus, pittosporum, dogwood but I need some more shrubs - you've given me great ideas here. Look forward to the grasses video.. Thanks 🎉

Thanks for watching Alison. Your right it’s really important to grow just as much annual greenery. I use Buplereum a huge amount in the summer in bouquets. I absolutely love pittosporum but unfortunately I lost my shrubs to a really bad winter 🥶 I would love to know if there was a pittosporum variety that was really hardy. Have a good week x

Looking for a video on annual foliage to grow for pickings each season, to compliment bouquets. A very hard video to find, if you're looking for new content ideas!

Thanks for the idea! It's a good one. I have some annual foliage growing this year but I can think of others I have grown in the past but not this year which were good to. I am off to have a think about this one!
