In this video, we take a look at the original Smokey and The Bandit License Plate. Almost 40 years since the movie's release, this iconic plate is still going strong!
Smokey and The Bandit is one of those movies that everyone knows and loves. It's hard to believe that it's been around for almost four decades and this license plate is still going strong!
Lol, Richard was opening them up like a kid on Christmas morning ripping through meticulously wrapped presents

my brother and I rebuilt all of Burt Reynolds carburetors on all of his carburetored vehicles he had a Smokey and the Bandit stadium stunt show towards the end of his life. RIP BURT.

I lived in Palm Beach for a while and I delivered parts to Murphy's Towing and Autobody. The business that built and painted the Trans Am cars for the 1st and 2nd movies. They had a set of Ban One plates framed on their wall along with pictures of them building the movie cars.

Unless I’m mistaken, that is not a valid state license plate because the letters were not stamped into the plate metal!
The back of the plate was smooth and the face of the plate was smooth!
Unless Georgia had smooth faced plates in 1976 that plate is not a real plate!
It may be a real Smokey And The Bandit plate made by the art department for the movie, but it is very doubtful that it bears any registration in the state of Georgia!

Yep. My mother had lived right by where they filmed the old bridge scene. I was born in Savannah in 1972

for anyone who's interested. ABSOLUTELY IN LOVE WITH THESE!!! But my favorite are the two with Reynolds signature and even met me gave me some personal memorabilia from 1977 which is the year I was born.
Father of one of my team members paid for the donor cars and all the work. His son was a ABSOLUTE UNIT of a Devil Dog.

Born in Lansing, Michigan. He would come to town to see family and drive by his boyhood home on Leasia Street. His family moved him I believe when he was maybe 10 or 12 years old. Steven Segal, same story. True story. I was born in the same hospital as those fellas.

I think, Burt was 5, when they moved to Florida. They stopped to stay overnight in Waycross, GA just short of the Florda line. Waycross stuck in his mind for whatever reason, & he told people, that he was from Wacross, Georgia for most of his life, & it became part of his official biography for most of his life. Late in life, he admitted, that he was from Michigan, & as a kid, he said he was from Waycross, GA to fit in as a Southerner. From then, he at least allowed people to think; he was from Georgia.
Maybe it worked out for him? The movies that made him a huge star, were set in the South, & casting directors might not have cast him in those roles, if they saw he was from Michigan?
Amazing how many people still remember smokey and the bandit. We grew up driving TA's. Fun cars the early cars.

They had it in their showroom for many years.
Now in the Tallahassee Auto Museum.

I remember plates in the 70s both typical and personalized being pressed raised not flat printed.
He said the art department made the plates for the movie that they weren’t real plates
If the art department made the originals, it would be incredibly easy for somebody to make fake plates today and sell them as if they are "originals" for big $$$. After all, no need for raised lettering. Just get some steel, paint it, leave it outside in the rain a few days, put a masking tape sticker on it with some sort of labels, and voila! big profits. And who can prove they're real or fake, either?

The scenics and art department are super talented. I love watching them create props and set pieces.

Jerey Reed's house was my mom's Aunt's house. The girl on the bike was my cousin. They had Three Bandit T/A's....Two drivers, and one on a trailer. It was a GREAT time to be alive in Ga. 👍✌👍

That is one of mine & my hubs fav movies! No telling how many times we’ve watched it over the years! I would love to surprise my husband with something like that. There is no telling what he paid for it. I’m sure it’s way outta my price range. But man just to have something from that movie is so cool! Loved Burt!
The seven space plate "number" on a seventies license plate from Georgia was a dead giveaway that they weren't real. Only 6 characters, including spaces were used.

Burt Reynolds signed the dashboard of my "trans am"
2015 chevy camaro with professional makeover t tops and the wheels look like those original ones. Of course the paint and body work looks like the trans am updated. I absolutely LOVE this thing. I got 2 black a white and a blue one as well as red.😂

I worked on and built one of those cars.
An 1981 trans am , with a 700 hp 396, art carr turbo 400, 4 wheel disc.
What a beast.
Work done for the stunt man who bought one of the cars. He painted it red, stupid move.
That was the thing, replacement of the Poncho mill for a big block Chevy....I had a junkyard 78 with a 400..Dad told me to pull the thermostat because Pontiacs ran hot too much...I drag raced it at Maple Grove Raceway..turned the oil into milkshake..lol...

Ok.ok. I'm just funning with you. They all have some potential. Yeah, there was a heating issue for a moment, but, after doing the right thing, it never occurred again, and I would race that car around all day long with great milage and wheel stands in 2nd gear.

I just saw yesterday that peaked my interest and will probably yours too. There’s a guy in my small town that has what looks to be a Smokey and the Bandit TA in his garage. Idk the dude because he just recently moved to town but I was driving by headed to the Mississippi with the boat and saw it. Wife couldn’t care less but I’m going to try and meet this guy and talk to him. It looked to be in pristine condition! ❤

It's well known the movie was filmed in 1976. So if you are looking for a CB radio for your Bandit Trans Am, you will need a Pace CB-166, the 23 channel version and NOT the 40 channel version

I knew someone that had California Bandit 2 plates. He died and I tried to get first shot at them but family and friends I believe made them disappear. I would show a picture but I can't post one. Glad you got the real deal.
This is cool. I have one of the plates from Smokey and the Bandit 2. It is a hand-painted Quebec plate off one of the RCMP cars. Some of the cars were junked in Vegas after filming. I was in the USAF and stationed at Nellis. I have pictures of some of the cars but not the one I got the plate off
I must of sat there and watched all those burt reynolds movies with my grandad over 100 times loved all of them hooper was cool bridge jump at the end 👌

Ran that piece of Hwy 75 in the Georgia mountains to go paragliding a couple times a month where they filmed the scenes of splashing through the river and where the old guy on the porch says, “ he drives pretty good, don’t he?” The buildings in that shot, including the porch, are still there and look essentially the same😎
