This kid is definitely not stupid. He’s just not educated and there’s a huge difference. He was smart enough to walk away from a bad deal and ask the smartest car guy he knows for help.
Say what you will about this kid but it's impressive that he asked for help from the smartest person he knows.

Kinda, but at the same time, it wasnt so much who Richard was as it was what he knew.
Knowing the right people helps, but having the right knowledge and information is the real vital part.
All this stuff is kept "hidden" from most people on purpose, they should be teaching actuall stuff like this in schools rather than people having to figure this shit out for themselves.

Don't buy a new truck and only go into credit debt that you can pay back immediately if you need to increase your credit score. Save your money and pay as much with a down payment as you can..or buy outright with cash.

I feel good for the young guy that he got some help so he didn't get screwed as bad. At the same time, it's sad to see him take on a load of debt he never needed. Buying a new vehicle is one of the worst financial decisions someone can make (IMO).

Yeah, my old neighbor man taught economics and finance and he told me once that buying an automobile on time is one of the worst decisions a person can make. I said "but most people don't have 20 K to go out and buy a new car." He said, Oh but you can afford spending dam near 40 K over time? That's rediculace. Just save up because otherwise your just making the bank or the dealership double their costs.
Doing that every 2 or three years is horrible. He'll pay off the debt and be wiser for it. In the meantime, he has been rewarded for good behavior. At least in the first 3 years, he shouldn't have any surprise mechanical problems to have repaired. During that time, he can save so that the next vehicle won't need so much financing. After 2 or 3 vehicles, it's cash every time, no interest costs (except for the loss of the use of the money). You have to start somewhere.

I respect the kid for having no debt and having $13,000 saved as a down payment.
Then with a swish of the pen he had almost no money and 18 thousand in debt.
The kid had no business buying that expensive a truck.
He's gonna be loosing 2 to 4 thousand dollars a year on that thing, for years, in depreciation.
I don't know what the kid makes but I wouldn't be surprised if that's as much as 10% of his pre tax income, getting flushed away.
@@kkknotcool Finally, thank you for saying this. The icing on the cake was discussing whether his parents should potentially co-sign - this is always a warning sign that you are buying too much. Good lord, this kid needs to save for a house or something that will appreciate in value. Keep a garbage truck and drive it with pride knowing that you aren’t giving into marketing.
That's the amount I was able to save and put down on my car back then in 2016. I'll be 52 in August. He's doing a great job saving
@Gillie Monger I think it would depend on how much savings he has left. He did say that his parents were contributing to the sale.The beauty part of the loan is that he can make extra payments and pay it off early and save a bunch of money.
I do wish that he could have found something cheaper in a used truck but, you get what you pay for. He will either pay the bank or, pay a mechanic to keep his on the road. It's also getting expensive to get cars worked on. Because of this pandemic, everyone is trying to make as much as they can when selling a car so they can pay their bills. In all honesty, I would have waited a year to save a bit more and wait for the dealer to get more of a selection in. I think they did pick out a nice truck, worthy of making payments on. I just hope he makes the extra payments to get the loan off quickly.
I also have an 08 4runner. I just finished looking online for fun what I might like to replace it with. 2015 SR5s with 50k miles are going for $30k here in Va. Cars are just getting more expensive.

@@alecm2721 it's scripted but it's not like that isn't how sleazy dealerships work, it's not uncommon to hear about deals like that. My wife's friend decided she wanted a new car, went in a paid $64 grand for a new Armada, they only gave her $4500 for a trade in on her three year old Xterra, and her interest rate was ridiculous as well. She only cared about the payment and that she could afford it, absolutely no concern with how much money she was throwing away, interest rates, the true value of the Armada, etc. she just wanted a payment at X amount a month and what do you know, they "helped" her out with that. I have a couple friends that work at credible dealerships, they say the most common concern is how much it is a month, that's it. Lots of people don't get financial education like they should and there's lots of people out there that don't mind taking advantage of that.
As a former Ford car salesman myself I completely respect what this man did for this young 22 year old kid.
Had a boss just like Richard who helped me out in a situation just like this when I was 19, he went with me and I got the same truck I was looking at for cheaper with a 3.4% interest rate instead of 11%. He was cool enough to let me get a credit card, in my name and everything, that he told me to use on gas for my work truck and misc. work expenses and would pay it off monthly to build my credit score up. I got a nice truck had it for 2 years traded it in, got a used tahoe, got my wife a new traverse, and bought a house in the same month. I left that company to go into the trade I was going to school for, but we stay in contact and I fix all of his equipment now

Just stumbled onto this TH-cam channel. Loved the show. That was me, 52 years ago, at a dealership by myself, facing across the desk at a professional salesman. 'Cept I didn't have any help or moral support. Very impressed with the "kid". He apparently comes from a good family and has a lot on the ball. Hope he goes far.

That is exactly how I sold cars for well over 14 years, and I sold between 20 and 25 cars each and every month. This is how a majority of dealerships work. Unfortunately there are some that don't, and those stories (real or added exaggerations) are what a majority of people think about when thinking about car salesmen.
I’d get on a plane and fly out there to just deal with an honest salesman who clearly explained it.

My wife and I bought a car from this dealer back in 2010, they were friendly and very easy to deal with, when we replaced her car had I still lived in or near Texas we would have bought from them again.

NEVER give up that kinda cash, do your homework and you won’t have to and be prepared to get up and walk out.
He gets commission on the full price, not just the down payment. Your logic says if a dealer has a 0 down program, the salesman makes nothing.

Another option for a lesson: "You have 13k, you car is worth 5k? That makes 18k.
My friend, let's go find you a car at max 10.000$, whenever it needs to, we'll fix it up in our garage. Put 3.000$ on the side, get your first stocks with the remaining 5.000$ and each month you'll be putting an additional 400$ of stocks on your name. You aim for a minimum 25% profit before tax each year and in 3 years you can start lending money to people and their friends who don't do the math. I won't let you get into the devil's wheel of owing money."

When I was in school, they actually did teach this, it was called bone-head math. They were teaching the kids, real world skills. Meanwhile, us over educated idiots were stuck in the useless Alg. II. We were always so jealous and who do you think came out ahead on that? 🤦♀️

We all started somewhere.
Sure can fault their parents, though. Kids should get credit cards as soon as they get to the point of making purchases on their own. As long as they're appropriately supervised, and given instruction to always pay their balance, it builds credit, acts as a buffer against fraud, and as an intermediary in payment disputes. No reason to be teaching your kid to always pay with cash/debit.
Start with a TV on a hire purchase scheme, it don't burdon your wage but establishes your credit profile.
@@JGuraan Credit cards are the worst thing to give someone that has no concept of money management, for example you give them a $5k limit on a card....woohoo $5k of free money that magically appears and no wisdom on how to pay it back. The best way is to tell them that if they want it then they get a job and earn it.

There was nothing wrong with that '06...so now he has 6 years of car payments on a liability that depreciated 25% the second he signed on teh dotted line...now in 6 years he will have an "Asset" worth about $15K that he paid $43K+ for...real smart!! People fall for this every day!!
Also the military. 29% APR Mustang GT buying E1 privates who marry strippers their 1st year in are the bane of every NCO in existence.
I drove my dads 4 door lemans to work on third shift and then on to school in the morning for three months till I saved up $500 to buy my used half primer half paint sixty eight fast back mustang. I’m sixty one and that’s the last time I ask any one for anything except for a job.
The thing that surprised me the most. Is when he had $13g Richard didn’t sell him a truck.
But my advice would of been. Keep the truck you have. Get a credit score. Take the 13g save some more and try for a house.
You can't get a credit score if you don't have a credit history. You have to get skin in the game, and that means a long term auto loan. That will build your credit history and then you can get great rates when you go to buy the house.

@@edwardwood6532 you would ideally need more than a CC or two. Showing your ability to afford a monthly payment of a few hundred a month for 2+ years helps a lot.
Yes a car loan for two plus years with no missed or late payments can boost your score bigly. For a 4-5 year note; Paying it off early is fine too.
@@edwardwood6532 Beennthere, had five credit cards to my name when I went to buy my truck. It only helped my credit up to a point. It's Unsecured debt, it's only somewhat helpful, as are paying your rent and utility bills.
They want to see secured debt with something behind it, be it a car, a student loan, a house, even a tv or a mattress set. You want to build credit, that's what you need.
I'm from Colorado. 4X4 is essential no matter where you're from though having clearance and 4X4 is IMPORTANT it has saved me from so many problems in snow, rain/ mud, going over railroad tracks or curbs in emergency situations you can keep all the bells and whistles But keep the 4X4 and clearance with good size all terrain tires

Seriously. Take Scotty Kilmer’s advice and just get a used car that was checked out by a good mechanic. My dad just got a Silverado 4x4 v6 for 13k with 57,000 miles.
This kid could literally buy my dads truck 3 times for the price of one at the dealership.

@@jmackinjersey1 There is no way the kid should have paid pretty much MSRP without ANY negotiation for a lower sale price. Richard probably got something on the back end because he didn’t really help the kid that much.
Ritchard didn't cut on anything. He got this video made and that is all he needs out of this project. Videos are long term investments. It's all spot on, you kids can bark all day you want. This guy got the best deal in his personal case that worked out the best for him. He is set with a new truck and have service times. One thing I didn't know growing up, as soon as you can, get a credit card and use it, buy things and keep it paid off. Now you have a credit score and can borrow money. My parents never told me.

Giving someone 35 thousand dollars that took forever to save hurts, signing a paper that says you will pay for it later doesn't, it just stresses you out if you have any sense.

If you don't have well over 250 thousand dollars in investments then you have no business buying a 250 thousand dollar house. A place to live cost like 70 thousand in most parts of the country, 250 thousand is just a really nice place to live.

@@jack002tuber I guess but the only possible scenario I could ever see in taking on debt is like a medical emergency. But that's why I maintain investments I can easily liquidate and health insurance. So I don't see any possible reason I'd need debt.

You think the guy gets parts probably for free? Not a chance in hell. At cost pricing for a shop typically runs 10-20%% below MSRP, that’s what you or I as the customer pay, then we pay for labor to get it installed. If you ink a deal with a company to become an exclusive [insert aftermarket part company here] installer you get even deeper discounts. They want you to install their product over other companies. So when you become exclusive to one brand the discount goes deeper and deeper. I’ve seen companies (not automotive) get equipment for 40% below MSRP and give an “at cost” price and the company STILL makes money on their “at cost” price they pitch to their client.

This may be scripted as part of Richard’s show; however, it certainly provides an education for millennials and Gen Z. I just wish the kid had done more research regarding trucks, accessories, tires, dealer fees (what to pay for and what to refuse) and what the dealer had in inventory. With this research in hand, he could have worked on the deal/price before discussing financing and payment. He should have viewed Kevin Hunter’s TH-cam channel before stepping onto ANY car lot.

Nice that Richard wanted to help him out. But it's very concerning that people think it's normal to get a loan on a car... Live below your means and buy a car you can afford. Keep saving and investing if you can. Don't lose your cashflow to unnecessary debt payments. You will have a stress free life.

Richard is a likable man. People around him smile a lot. He is talking in a way that really bring a smile to your face. But listening to the 'car dealer' the guy should be told that the car dealer makes more the less down payment he put in. Credit is very profitable.
I didn't buy a vehicle from a car lot, new or used, until I was in my late 30's. I understand why he didn't know and I'm happy Richard was able to talk him through this. Great video, very informative.

Never finance through a dealer, your best rates are through a Credit Union.
Not true. Ive gotten people approved for better rates than the credit union they use many times. Good try though
not true, i financed through credit union, had check in hand at 2.49%, dealer says if i beat that rate will u go through us, comes back says i can get u 1.99, i said fine with me. Its less than $15 a month savings, but over 5 years its a good amount

@@change4range23 that's the exception, not the rule. a better strategy is to finance the lowest rate you find then refinance asap. Bank of America and many others will beat your current rate by .5% if you refinance. I also negotiate by accepting the extended warranty they think they will bank big time on and then cancel it within 30 days losing nothing on it and using it as a bargaining chip.
Nope… my brand new 2019 Tahoe GM financial gave me 0% interest for 72 months… my credit union best they could do is 0.9% yeah GM financial for the win but with this pandemic there are no deals 🤦🏻♂️

Honestly I wish someone had sat and done the same with me when it came to credit in my life. Took me 15 years to recover from my mistakes. So fair play to him for asking, I was too embarrassed and kept making mistakes over and over.
After losing my first car in an accident and having to look into buying a new one. This video was a lot of help. Can’t believe the disservice my parents are doing to me right now by not helping me out and I having to find out everything by myself 🙄
