  • With the first season of Delicious in Dungeon wrapping up, I figured now would be a good time to go back and take a look at it after my first video; share my thoughts on it and if the theme I proposed still holds up!
    Thank you for watching!

Senshi's backstory not only make sense to why he been living in the dungeon for so long and why he is so into eating monsters. It also gave him so much characters than ever before. It's the episode that show almost all of the emotions that i never thought Senshi could ever show. And it honestly made me love him even more

He was already my favorite character watching this anime. It helps that he’s a Dwarf, and Dwarves are one of my favorite Fantasy races. But that backstory really elevated him into a layered character, in my opinion.

His backstory also explains why he named Anne the way he did and why he’s always thinking about feeding the youngsters. He lived starving for some time, so he’s also always thinking about food. He was also the most careful going into the dungeon, and exists in the dungeon without many strong desires so he doesn’t lose his way.

I just love how natural the progression of the characters feels. They are coworkers first, and friends second, so it makes sense that at first, they didn't know too much about each other, and as the challenges get harder they are forced to be closer, thus strengthening their bonds.
I feel the same way about Ryoko Kui, seeing how much passion she puts into every aspect of her work makes me want to create stuff too.

Yeah that's a good way to put the dynamic of the characters; most shonen and anime shows have the cast like a family very quickly but I feel the group dynamic and progression of it is much more realistic here!

It's not always peaceful, and some fucked up things happen, but life ultimately doesnt belong to a specific "genre", because it doesn't follow a narrative someone made up. So it's both dark, goofy and everything is between, like dungeon meshi.

My favorite part about this series is the use of "respawn" or "healing", they explained it in such detail and Kabru's party always dying is so goofy not because it is fun to die, but because we know they will be back later again. This part of the series is also interesting because unlike in most anime that the main character is "new" in their journey, Laios and his team are not. They have accumulated experience before the series started and it avoided a lot of info dumping from random characters but most of the data comes from one of the main characters themselves. Laois himself mentioned that he respawned atleast once before.
What I can assure you is that this series didn't lose their soul unlike other series that was expanded too much.

Really funny you say this because this season ended just before the point that I, personally, would say it gets darker. Or at least, less slice of life and more story driven. Even most of the slice of life portions beyond this point are actually kind of plot relevant or say something plot relevant about a character. To me the point where things get "darker" is when we learn what Mithrun's whole deal is. It genuinely disturbed me when I first read it. The anime stopped at a good spot is what I'm saying.
Also the reason a lot of people hate Shuro is because a lot of people (by that I mean most everybody) in the fandom thinks Laios is autistic, and a lot of people in the Dungeon Meshi fandom *are* autistic, so that scene with Shuro complaining about the fact that Laios can't read social cues hit home for them and reminded them about shitty things like that people have said to them before.

    • @CameronHanashi
      @CameronHanashi  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Yeah I think the anime wrapped up the first season really well actually! I was curious as to how they would do it since I though Senshi's backstory would be a perfect stopping point with the changelings as the first episode of season 2. But they set things up really well with the canaries and hope for saving Falin.
Also in regards to Laios being autistic coded - I did want to talk about that a bit since I've seen a lot of people talk about that and find it really good characterization, but I couldn't quite find place for it in the video and since I'm not autistic myself, I'd want to do more research and talk to more people about it first. Maybe in a future video though!
      Thanks for the comment!

@CameronTurnerStory Kui has written mangas before with explicit autistic characters, so the autistic coding for Laois is very intentional even if not confirmed by word of god.

I think what the manga readers talk about getting darker tone, is much more to do the progression of story getting much more serious & the stakes are getting higher than ever for our main characters. Of course with the end of episode 24 for this season, such things will happen in second season. I think the world building & interesting details of its lore are what made this series truly something special despite essentially being a fantasy cooking series.

@creedecriswell634 , for one, eat healthy and anoth to be in top shape.
Also, by eating, your soul dissolves, and you can't be revived. That's why they need to save Falin quickly.
      Spoilers
Also, Falins Dragon fusion fused their souls, and Laios Plan is to eat the dragon half to weaken the Dragon soul enoth so that Falin can be in control, this actually works.
Also, in the end, it is revealed that eating makes something part of yourself, like the Golden Lion is the Demon who created the Dungeon, but he is a 4th Demensional magic being that can eat emotions and through that gained emotions, especially hunger for more yummy emotions.
In the finale, Lios gets turned into a monster, and the Demon possesses his body so he can be Genie and master at the same time. This allows him to escape the Dungeon to make the world a farm for emotions, but the monster Lios turns into can also eat emotions which enables him to eat the Demon and rid it of all emotions making it harmles.
Which makes the story not about food but about eat or be eaten.

Yeah it goes back to like the original DnD. Orcs were pig-like so Japanese depictions of orcs have stuck with that, similarly kobolds were described as having “dog-like snouts” but it was mistranslated to “dog-like” and that’s also stuck
Early DND had a pretty big influence on a lot of Japanese Western-style fantasy stuff, especially Final Fantasy. It’s why Bahamut is in Final Fantasy at all (And why he tends to be a powerful, generally good, dragon rather than the more accurate fish of Babylonian mythology), or why healing spells harm the undead, or why coreul/displacer beasts and mindflayers have been recurring enemies, and so on

That second OP is absolutely not meant to be happy. It's actually a very harrowing opening once you realize what's **actually** going on in it. I won't spoil it for anyone, but keep that opening in mind for season 2. It's very, very cool foreshadowing!

@@CameronHanashi I'm thinking they do, because a lot of comparison images I see showcasing that is taking the early group shenanigans and justaposing them with final two confrontations which is where the tone is understandably at it's lowest and where, unlike the rest of the show, there is not an imediate tension reset through humor.
Like we've had some pretty dark moments ever since the Red Dragon, but it usually comes followed with a humorous scene or at least a comunity based one. And while they never go away, they get less common the closer we are to the finale, as the stakes ramp up, but I still think the story never forgets it's roots and jump straight into Dark Fantasy.
It does get pretty dark, really dark for people with specific fears that the story tackles head on, but it always does it with the same hopeful atittude as the story started with. I mean, this is a story that had a comedic tone for 10 episodes overlying a desperate rush to get to your loved one before she's diggested, Kui has shown she can juggle tones well!

another thing i love is that ryoko kui held off on getting an anime until she was done with her series. it could have boosted her sales, but it also put less pressure on her story writing and she clearly prioritized that. it paid off so well, i feel like a big reason trigger adapted the series for their first manga adaptation (besides the director being a huge fan of ryoko kui) was because they knew it was good beginning to end

Loved the ending as well and even more when they incorporated Izutsumi into it.
Also I find it fascinating how much I like Falin after learning more about her from Laios' group.

Yeah I really like how much we’ve come to know about Falin and how so much of the community loves her despite not getting a lot of time with her!

I agree I think izutusmi had a lot of potential granted she did join only a few episodes ago but I Aswell am really exited to see what they do with her in season 2

I don't like when people use the word "introverted" when talking about socializing in Japan.
Japanese people do not behave this way because they are all introverts, but because this is stipulated as civilized behavior.
Among those who behave in the same "Japanese way," there are introverts and extroverts. AND Shuro is specifically described as an introvert man from his childhood by Maizuru.
The reason why Shuro sometimes dislike Laios while sometimes admires Laios, is that Laios is "barbaric" in his cultural sense, but at the same time Laios has a merit that Shuro personally does not have.

I like to think that the anime is like ordering takeout, but the manga is like going to an off the beaten path restaurant, one where there is a single professional chef, silently creating your dinner without you ordering anything. After all, you finding the restaurant means you are searching for a particular flavor that they have experience with.

No you’re actually right it’s about bringing people together over food.
And it’s darker and weirder than you thought. Season 2 grows on a lot of things.
There’s no OMG TWISTS. It’s all building on themes and things already set up.
And it’s about coming together as a people to eat and celebrate living.

This has good potential and amazing world building it has good lore but the story burnout.
It cage itself on the dungeon burns all the bridge that would possibly extend the story. To many BS just to extend the story in the dungeon. Shiru typical japanese with harem, Laios child brain immature MC. The hobbit and the cat was kinda just there they had background story but not much. Marcil and Senshi MVPS. Senshi cooking and Marcil comedic Moe carry the story.
