The E-bow creates a regular magnetic field that vibrates the string. The built-in device Aubrey mentioned is called a sustainer, made by a company called Fernandes. It comes standard in most of thier guitars, and you can buy a kit for retrofitting in your guitar, but you'll have to replace a pickup. It does the same thing as an e-bow, but with a couple cool options, like a harmonic fifth mode and volume control.

@MrSadistico its an e-bow, means you can sustain a note indefinitely as its like a violin bow for the electric guitar. have to say i always thought they were magnetic though, but thats probably just my ignorance of them.... so ill stand corrected if its not.

@tdkcdrom i think that the ebow solo isn't meant to be the main focus. it's part of the ambiance of the song, and it's still very prevalent in the mix here as well as the mix on the record.
