    As a keeper of red eye puffers I can say from experience that they are in fact VERY agressive. They are ambush predators that eat small fish mollusks and inverts. Small darty fish like tetras rasboras or barbs will work for small periods as the puffer will hunt them. I started with a pair in a 55G and within 3 hours I had one left. Think of them as just a small dragon or hump backed puffer. Slow, methodical, likes to hide. Will eat anything they are in a tank with. And smart. If they can't catch the smaller fish normally they will wait till you feed the small fish and attack then (again while in a 55 one of these things destroyed a school of 20 neon tetras in 5 days, ands 50 head school of tiger barbs in a week and a half) so please don't keep these with other fish unless your trying to use the other fish as feeders. Mine now lives in a 40breeder heavily planted and gets feeder live bearers to eat. Sometimes Molly's guppys swordtails plattys all of them.

    Africans can go in a 29. You can have a solid stock of say roughly 7. For example, yellow lab, demasoni, few zebras like the red, cobalt or albino, a peacock or two. It sounds over crowded but that's the point. It'd work better then people think.

    Hi,
    I am stocking a heavy planted 15 gallon cube with 3 dwarf pufferfish and a colony of shrimp, if the shrimp die I will go for otocinculus catfish. What size filtration do I need. There is already a really bad filter installed with only 8 gallon filtration. Do you think a 80 gallon/h canister is too much

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You have to look at the flow rate, if its blowing the shrimp, fish and plants around a lot and has a strong current in the tank it can be too much, especially being that puffers like calmer waters. Shrimps with puffers...risky; puffers love to eat...the shrimp will be tempting for them, plants will help...but the risk is still there!

    • @mckennaburns7248

      As much as I like captive bred animals, amano shrimp might be better as they're generally bigger bodied and can more likely hold their own.

I have a 55 if I need to set it up once these fish grow fully but I’m wanting to add one more fish into the 29 I get tomorrow they are currently in a 20, but no aggression issues, I don’t mind if the fish stays small but looking for something with color thought about doing a firemouth

    • @dwsdarius

    Red eye red tail puffers are aggressive to each other, only one in a 29 maybe 2 females but have a backup plan, otherwise pretty peaceful to other fish. I keep them with white clouds and otocinclus catfish as well as a few large (small will get eaten) zebra nerites and ghost shrimp (occasionally one disappears from time to time, but for the most part they are fast enough to get away)

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Really? I said a group because someone described them like larger pea puffers, but I never actually kept them yet

    • @stephenanderson1358
      @stephenanderson1358 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dwsdarius so yes they are a lot like pea puffers, generally don't want to keep pea puffers in large groups either, once they reach sexual maturity a group of pea puffers get nasty. When it comes to pea puffers I go with a male and two females in a well planted 10 gallon. Which seems like a lot of tank for three of them until you watch them interact. As for red red eye red tails a 40 breeder in like a 10 gallon for a trio, it seems like a lot of tank for 3 until you see them get at each other. The reason I get a large group of pea puffer, because when in the store they are to young to sex, but once they are old enough, I keep the ones I want and find homes for the ones that aren't getting along so well. Their are big personality difference in between all puffers, you can get ones that are sweet as peach pie and other that absolute terrors and as time goes on the sweethearts can get dark while the pycos calm down. I think that's why people can have such differing opinions based off of experiences. Having kept both for a good many years this is what seems to work for me. 1male 2 female per 10 gallons for pea puffers, 1male 2 females per 40 gallons for red eye red tails. Any water amounts lower than that I go with a single puffer

    I am getting a 29 gallon tank soon and am trying to figure out what to stock it with. I know that I am going to do some aquascaping possibly one or two pieces of thin drift wood and various plants. I have really fallen in love with platinum angel fish as well as black Mollies however, through my research I have gotten some mixed results about stocking them. I would like to have a small school of 4-6 black mollies and a pair of platinum angels along with a couple of albino corys. I really like the idea of having sleek black and white fish in my tank for the contrast but I don’t know what would be best for a 29 gallon. For the tank I have a sump filter that can support up to 75 gallons so it can take a pretty hefty bio load but I’m not sure if a pair of angels and a small school of mollies would thrive in a 29 gallon. Anyways if anyone could help me out with this that would be great.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well the mix could work, but a pair of angel fish may not be best in this sized tank because if they are a mated pair they can become very territorial which would be bad in this size tank, if they are not a mated pair, then the most dominate will be aggressive towards the least dominate angel fish and the could result in death or stress...so 1 angel fish would be best. As for the mollies, to prevent aggression between males I'd recommend 1 male and the rest females.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sometimes its best to keep pictus catfish in groups of their own kind that way they can spread their aggression among each other. If you don't have space for more or just don't want more than consider the fish your mixing them with, they do best with more aggressive fish like south and central american cichlids

    Could you please give the exact measurements of your 29 gallon tank? Manufacturer's tend to not give you what they say is a 32 gallon or 38 gallon tank. I know when one measures the inside of the tank then divide by 231 you get the true gallons it holds.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes sometimes the measurements are not 100% accurate, mine actually measured 30 1/4 x 12 1/2 x 18 3/4 inches outside, I never measured inside but you know if I'd probably lose 3 or 4 gallons

    • @dwsdarius

      I would keep a mix of hillstream loachs (both reticulated and borneo suckers) maybe 7-8 each, a pair of dwarf goby (many different types, but only one pair per tank), a school of danio (one type in my opinion would look best), and maybe a few other mid level swimmers

      DWSDARIUS FISH TANKS hmm, ok.

      I was just unsure that those u said in the video were mostly for longer tanks.

    • @dwsdarius
      @dwsdarius  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leaf fish, especially south American leaf fish will work with your design...so if you include a good stick (driftwood) scape, they won't mind that tank size...same with the crocodile fish...which is very similar to a gourami , and you know gourami spend a lot of time going up and down to take breaths from the surface...so it also won't mind the tall tank. A solo convict cichlid, given that you spend a lot of time in front of it...would spend the majority of its time swimming in circle trying to get you to feed it (similar behavior with most cichlids kept solo)...so I also believe that it could work in that tank size

      Are convic rare in «big» pet stores, since i have keept blue ram so i now much fun i had keeping cichlids.
      But my problem is that i now of lots of small pet store(mostly inside a mall) and only one «big» one.
      Sooo, i would like to now if those are rare or not, since taken out all my fish from my 30 this summer so i dont want to wait 3 months for some custom delivery. And i have though about buying it online, but im not sure, sinces lots of things could go bad.
      So are convits rare?
