  • Statins, also known as HMG Co A reductase inhibitors, are a group of medications used to prevent cardiovascular events in patients with cardiac risk factors, and abnormal lipid profiles.
They are most effective in reducing bad LDL cholesterol levels in blood.
Out of all synthetic statins, atorvastatin is the most widely used statin, and it is relatively more potent than the other types of synthetic statins.
In general, statins are well tolerated by most individuals.
They should not be taken by individuals with underlying liver disease, because these medications are metabolized by the liver.
So, in liver disease, metabolism of statins gets impaired, leading to toxicity.
Statins are contraindicated during pregnancy since they can cause birth defects in the baby.
Common side effects of statins include, muscle pain, Headache and dizziness, Sleeping problems such as insomnia, And gastro-intestinal problems such as constipation, diarrhea, and indigestion.
Some rare side effects of statins include, hepatotoxicity, Pancreatitis, Loss of hair, Reduced sex drive, and erectile dysfunction, angioedema, and rhabdomyolysis, or breakdown of muscle tissue.
Asherman syndrome is a rare condition characterized by formation of adhesions in the uterine cavity, which can lead to absent menstruation, or amenorrhea, and subfertility.

Took statins for a few months then the muscle pain became debilitating, stopped taking them and after 5 or 6 weeks my body returned to normal. Never taking statins again. Made some lifestyle changes and cholesterol returned to normal. Do it naturally and stop the drugs whenever possible!

I took statins for 3 months. Went for a blood test and hadn't got back to my car before I received a call from my GP telling me to stop taking the tablets. I'd not had a single side effect, but the hospital was so concerned by the test results that they had immediately phoned my GP. Apparently, a few more weeks and I could have died.

But instead we got and inverted reaction it went up to 14. I just recently found out that the statin is the cause. Beware folks no kidding.... I was put on this statin after several years off them, I agreed with my GP to give it another go. Previously I used to get cramps and severe cramp in my right foot. Stopped statins and it went away, only to return when I restarted them, this statin also gave me headaches, after getting one so bad I ended up in bed in a dark room, I stopped them again, never again will I take them.

My wife was taking Crestor (rosuvastatin) and I was taking Lipitor (atorvastatin). She developed a chronic cough which seemed to be worsening, so she quit the Crestor, and the cough went away after a week or 2. Meanwhile I was getting night-time leg cramps so I quit taking the Lipitor, and the leg cramps went away. Later my doctor advised me to try the Crestor, so I did, and so far no coughing or leg cramps. So if one statin is causing side effects, you might try a different one. They are not all the same.

Started last fall and was waiting for all those common side effects. They didn’t come. What did come after about a month was ITCH. Eczema! I consulted Dr Google and yes it’s a thing.
Got switched to another statin. The itch subsided for a few days then hit hard - itchy welts on my scalp, upper back, and shins. That’s it for statins for me.
