- For the past 130 years, Mumbai Dabbawala Association has been delivering tiffins to 2,00,000 Mumbaikars with the manpower of 5000 workers. But today, they are out of job due to the pandemic. With things opening up, around 250 dabbawalas have gathered their courage and started delivering tiffins on cycle. Whereas, more than 4500 Dabbawalas and their families from Mumbai are still struggling to pay house rent, send their kids to school and even afford food. Swiggy and Zomato has already taken a toll on their jobs.
None of them pick up home cooked food from your house to deliver and RETRIEVE the dabba back to your home. It’s not the same business model.

Online work, work from home has ruined this industry which once upon a time was a subject fr Harward university. The poor are left to suffer in mumbai with no alternative plan. 😢😢😢😢

Folks that want/need healthy home made meals don’t have swiggy as an option. That’s just a delivery service. Maybe the core customer base for dabbawallas itself is dying out.

You did not notice his house. The paint pealed off. Ordinary steel utensils. The simple hair and saree of his wife. The Ordinary budget furniture of his home.
Men wearing gold is very common in traditional Indian families. Some men are also very attached to gold chain and ring. That does not mean they are living Kings life.
Indians don't prefer to sell their gold unless at the brink of desperation.
Those rings are part of his personality. If Ulhas had any scheme in his heart he would have removed those rings - but he kept them on - their is no deception in his heart concerning this situation.

Maharashtra govt ,, should give money to the employees...
They are not govt employees. It is a private association. But yes govt should help them.
Loss of job is due to lockdown , but after lockdown, people have started working from home..............So, dabba walas are left with very few people to deliver the dabbas.

They have best workforce and very efficient organnization.They should learn from Swiggy, Vfast courrier etc. and try to provide fast delivery of parcels plus food delivery anywhere in Mumbai which is in good demand presently.

Through my school years, my dabbawalla was the one that was always there through rain or shine. I want to donate, but I’m restricted by their donation form, which is pretty rudimentary.
International donors don’t have an option to donate through this form. Please pass on the message to them, they need to allow international donations to their organization through PayPal, Zelle or other means, for folks that don’t have an Indian bank account.
They’ve helped us through our years and I’m sure there are others like me that want to give back.
I’ve emailed them about this a long while ago, but no response. They are losing out on potential donations which is troublesome, after hearing the stories of affected dabbawalla families.
