  • How Debbie Made Addams Family Values EVEN GAYER || When it comes to The Addams Family, Debbie Jellinsky -- aka The Black Widow -- became a beloved addition in 1993’s Addams Family Values, especially among Addams Family Values’ queer fans. But Addams Family Values already had a large queer following and a hidden message supporting the LGBTQ+ community within its story, with both Diva Worship and the camp surrounding Debbie’s character only adding to it. So how does Debbie’s role in Addams Family Values make the queer perspective of the film even more obvious?

I love that the Addams family can be seen through different lenses. I watched this movie as a child from Hispanic immigrant parent and I always felt that Gomez Addams was Hispanic (Considering Raul Julia was Puerto Rican) and his family was a mixed cultured family, and that even though they don't fully blend in into the white heteronormativity, they are a loving and caring family that didn't care what people had to say about them. So when they cast Luis Guzman as the new Gomez it made me excited (and validated) as all hell.

I'll be honest, that subtext flew right over my head while I understood what was going on in the summer camp plot to a point. And then there's Debbie - I was very much in the thought that if she just embraced the family, she would have what she always wanted, and yes that would be a deranged serial killer but in the Addams? That's just Sunday afternoon.

I watched Values for the first time in ages a couple years ago and I realized that I missed a LOT of the subtext of the camp plot simply because I didn’t realize _how_ Joel was different.
As a kid, I thought Joel was different because he had brown hair and was a nerd. I liked him because I was nerdy and awkward too.
It never even dawned on me that he was Jewish, nor that he was being treated badly because of it.
I watched it as an adult and it was like watching a whole new movie. I loved it as a kid, but as an adult, there was just so much more depth to it because I’d understand so little except “people that are different (represented by brunettes) get treated badly by those in power (represented by blondes), and Wednesday is a badass.”
Now I get so much more subtext and also, Wednesday is still a badass.

It's not just queerness that I think this film appealed to or appeals to it's the overall inclusion of the "unique" population. I'm neurodivergent (autism and adhd) and watching the film as an adult further encouraged me that it's totally ok to be "different". As a child I was often picked on for being REALLY nerdy and I became a recluse who loved to read books during lunch rather than eat with other people. I also grew up in the 90's and could especially relate to Wednesday's character cause she was odd and quirky like myself.
Also I find it funny when the baby became "sick" he was blonde and blue eyed like the heterosexual norm at the time 🤣

The camp home decor, festers make over and heart apron. The girl was in bed watching a doc, eating chocolate and slept in her heels and pearls 👏🏻 if that ain’t me? Also Tiff from bride of Chucky, same vibe. Anyway I’m gay now so thanks?

As an 80s baby I was old enough to watch this in theater…it felt so good to be seen given I was already a preteen goth pansexual. The heavy theme of outcasts loving themselves/each other and spurning conformity was JUST what I needed. Debbie was just such a glorious scenery chewing performance. Joan Cusack has always been so under celebrated for her impeccable timing. I adored the tragedy of the Addams’ the one family who could have accepted and given her the love she needed. I also spent my 20’s using her delivery for Malibu when ordering that & pineapple juice then bonding with the gay bartenders who caught the reference. So many good memories associated with it. I’m cautiously optimistic about the Wednesday series and look forward to all the opinions.

Growing up I was obsessed with Dreamworks' 2D animated films, specifically The Road to El Dorado. It wasn't just the gorgeous music, art style, and animation that drew me in, but the characters themselves. The main trio is so charismatic. Even as a (socially oblivious) kid I understood that there was something unique about the relationship between Miguel and Tulio. More than friends, but not quite brothers. I found out much later that they were written to be lovers during most of development, which made a lot of things click. It seems that part of what drew me in was seeing two adult men be so openly affectionate with each other, and no one raising an eyebrow about it. (That and the possibility of a polycule at the end of the film.)
Writing this comment also brought back fond memories of exploring different sexualities and genders through fan fictions. I didn't realize exactly what was happening, but both media and fan creations allowed me to safely traverse LGBT culture and eventually discover myself.

The original source material was created specifically to be critical of that time period's ideas on relationships and families, particularly that trope of the married couple who bicker and fight and might actually hate each other. Instead of another couple who hate each other, we got a couple who were absolutely devoted to each other. The Munsters was similar in that regard. They too were a family that were more loving, generous, and accepting than any of their neighbors.

As a kid, I read EVERY SINGLE JACQUELINE WILSON book I could get my little hands on. At that same time, I started thinking about my identity and how I was Definitely Not Straight. In her books, I noticed a lot of times the characters would fawn over their female friends and how one could read that as Romantic.
Heck, I even shipped some of the best friend duos!
Years later, Jacqueline Wilson came out as gay, and neither my mom nor I were surprised. I'm honestly so glad that I was correct in my gay reading of her novels, because for the longest time I just thought I was being Too Gay to Function.
Turns out, it was Jacqueline Wilson, author of Opal Plumstead (my favorite) the Entire Time.

I think the first Addams is my favorite only because I saw it first. genuinely, I love both movies. And now, as an adult, I can see the effects movies like the Addams Family had on my expectations of relationships. I am baffled about why people seem so excited over relationships where the couple seems to hate each other.

    • @cheriremily9360
      @cheriremily9360 ปีที่แล้ว +5

It's because they think they 'got' the brass ring and reached their end goal in life. For them to be a 'couple' 'completes' them. Never mind they hate each other, manipulate and gaslight, and generally can't stand the other person or want to 'fix' each other. It's like buying the fixer upper that's for sale because they see 'potential'.

    • @kathycoleman4648

@@cheriremily9360 Yes. The trouble with the traditional fairytale is that "I do" is seen as the Happy Ending, with no consideration to what comes next. With the Addams Family, they're long past whatever their ritual(s) for that is / are, and we come into their lives as a couple en media res. Consider the fact that although families, in general, are seen as a largely right wing conspiracy in modern day. And yet people love the Addams. That's because family is not a set of constraints. It should be an authentic life lived with people you love and who love you for your truest self.

I wouldn't be surprised if Debbie was inspired by Cleopatra in the movie Freaks. The parallels are actually pretty striking in that - like Debbie - Cleopatra ingratiates herself with those deemed outside the norms of respectable society - in "Freaks" the various deformed circus performers - and only does so with the intent of winning over Hans (a little person) and his money, which she does by causing a rift with him and the other performers, as well as Frieda, his love interest (similar to how Debbie makes Fester sever ties with the Addamses). Like with Debbie and the Addams Family, who show her a kind of acceptance she's likely never seen before, the circus performers overwhelm and disgust her with their deeming her "one of us" in their chant at the dinner table, prompting her to lash out and finally show her true colors, violently dismissing them as "freaks" - which ultimately seals her fate and leads to her scheme being exposed. Although where Debbie is just killed, Cleopatra is dealt an even more graphic fate by being dismembered and rendered a disabled "duck woman" in a carnival sideshow now reduced to the very "freak" she was so repulsed by before, no longer able to enjoy the privilege that her "glamor" gave her in conformity (like with Debbie, her look chases a similar aesthetic - in Cleopatra's case her style is clearly meant to imitate glamorous "it girls" of the early 30s when Freaks was made; women like Jean Harlow or Joan Crawford). I have no idea if that was Rudnick's intention but listening to this video I was eerily reminded of how similar the two cases were.

It's interesting; I'd never really considered the movie in any deeper way - I only watched the first of the two recently, but I watched Values ages ago and fell in love with it. But as you talked about the character of Debbie, that scene where Morticia says 'pastels' in the most disappointed tone, I fully understand what it means now. And Debbie's reaction also makes so much sense. Of course she would get offended by being called out for hiding herself. She needs to be protected in her delusion that she's just like everybody else.

I can't choose because I'm a super Addams Family fan. I became familiar with the source material late in life. My intro was the 1964 series, which was syndicated, translated and shown in Puerto Rico when I was about seven, I think. I loved both these movies for different reasons. I've seen the newer versions with one of my favorites, Charlize Theron, voicing Morticia and I'm waiting for Wednesday to come out.
I absolutely love your take on Debbie. I am fascinated by the conservative notion that 80s-90s movies were not political. Plus, I'm a big Raul Julía fan and the one thing I know is that he always had this ability to pick characters that were either obviously making a political statement (Romero, Moon over Parador) or quietly giving it to you (Addams). My favorite read of your video, which was my intro to you, is when you said that Debbie went from wanting a Malibu Barbie to looking like Cynthia, Angelica Pickles favorite doll. You are fantastic and I look forward to your perspective on other things.

Always loved Addams Family Values the mostest! I've used Debbie's backstory monologue in an audition before, actually, because it's just such a masterpiece. Plus, Barry Sonnenfeld's distinct directorial vibes can't be understated either.
Joel being in the in-between of Camp Chippewa's "rebels" like Wednesday and Addams is perfectly in line with the commentary on conservative "family values" concepts. Joel (like writer Rudnick and director Sonnenfeld) is Jewish, one of the most prominent examples of groups who have "conditional white privilege" in America. His parents, too, are trying to fit in with their WASPy Republican neighbors, betraying the Jewish value of social justice in doing so, just as Debbie denies her inner Addams by pursuing exurban upper middle-class 90s blandness!
Also: wild that you mentioned the diva worship aspect because a friend and I were just talking about queer diva worship then and now, and the change from earnestness in desire for vicarious representation to the weird ironically unironic love of mess that we find ourselves in now.

Bryan Fuller I think confirmed just a few years ago that Pushing Daisies, a show about a male-female couple who aren't able to touch due to magic reasons, was inspired by the AIDS epidemic (this comment came out at the height of the covid pandemic, since people had mentioned resonating with the social distancing aspects of the relationship). I had never even fathomed that angle -- I appreciated it more from a lens that you don't need sex to have romance. But Fuller's comment made me appreciate how he turned an experience that must have been so painful -- having to be distant from someone you love -- into something kind of bittersweet and magical.
