This is SUCH a fantastic solo by Jeff....And I LOVE when he just shifts into overdrive at 1.39 ....There are SO many great ideas here....5 stars and another 5. Love it Jeff!
Wow...you are really the Trump of bass. Can't even take a diverging thought. Gets instantly angry using big CAPITAL LETTERS. Even when I was never vulgar or mean. Wow.... well you know what Ru(fuss ) Trump. I'm glad you took me out of your FB followers. You might be a good player....but you don't strike me as being a good person. But as you say....."Nice try."
Jeff''s THE SHIT!!!... He's got it all. Not just a bass player but just one of the most complete musicians these days. A great source of inspiration. Who ever put this video on here: Thanx a mile!
Another Great Gone to mourn. And I didn't even know him until I read a post on a friend's Facebook wall. Can't believe I didn't know such a stellar musician.
Pongu Fogu : Now thank you! Jeff was a shining light in the musical world and that was the great thing about musicians of his caliber who not only lived in the city but played most of their gigs there, they were very approachable. I was talking to Jesse Murphy a couple summers back and Jeff’s name came up. Jesse is another monster bassist in and around the city. I can’t help thinking about “The Bottom Line” which sadly was greedily swallowed up by NYC. When I think about The Bottom Line, Mike Stern,Jeff Andrews are always the guys I think about. Bar 55 as well. Any videos or pictures I have of my days hanging with Gregg Allman or Stevie Ray I try to post because it helps tell the story of these musicians. It the only way out younger generation of musicians are going to learn about these people. I’ll watch this video easily 3X again before bed and not be bored.
really seriously solid playing! jeff andrews is a red hot bass soloist, i still treasure that one memorable lesson i took way back 21 years ago, while he was with michael brecker. he changed my approach to playing/soloing. he is truly one of nyc's fantastic bass players!
See that! Melody, rhythm, harmony, shapes, phrases, sequences, and.....actual events that you can remember. All grooving. All on a 4 string. All on an F blues, with amazing tone, that actually sounds like a bass. No white paint on the fingerboard. No low C# theory. No Bullsh*t. Just music. Saw Jeff with the tour for Brecker's (R.I.P.) first album, with Stern, Calderazzo and Nussbaum, back in '87. Been inspired ever since. Absolutely the most underrated bassist of the late 80's, and the 90's.
Saw this crew with the exception of Weckl at some little club in lower Manhattan quite a few years ago. I was BLOWN away but Jeff. Got to hang out with him and Mike too! Great guys with great attitudes and just MONSTER PLAYERS!
I've seen this guys many times in '93-'94, in Italy and Switzerland, both with Weckl and Gottlieb. At Capolinea in Milano we spoked a lot, all the break between the two sets, and about Jaco he told me "Jaco opened the door, we just went in". Jeff is the most moving bass player I've ever met, I learned a lot of my playing from him. That's why I just can thank him.
Man that was sooooo sweet. Fluency! Plus DW & MS cranking out the groove.... Love it. That solo would bring a smile to Jaco's face if he were still here... Magic.
Yes, a flurry of notes finger style. Excellent and with a warm wool-y bass tone on a souped up P Bass. There is hope after all. What an inspiration. Excellent finger style on both hands. Fantastic

Jimmy Earl also licks his fingers about every 30 seconds. But, both are simply phenomenal players which are recognized by insiders in the music community but not given their props in bass magazines!!
Man, Wow, Jeff is a Fantastic Bassist Soloist. He has always been one of my all time favorite Bass kats. The first time I saw him perform was at the Detroit Jazz festival Aug 1989, with Tenor Sax man The late Michael Brecker. Adam Nussbaum was on Drums that night. Mike Stern on Electric Guitar and solos. Joey Calderozzo on Acoustic Piano. One of the best Jazz performances I ever seen. These kats blew the roof of the sucker. Quote from Greoge Clinton Paliarment Funkedelic. Jeff holds a BA and
Jeff and Peter Erskine toured with Michael Brecker back in the day, I remember as a youngster having my jaw on the floor for the whole night. Man, what a tight rhythm section, what a badass bass player!
the father of jazz bass solos on electric bass. last year he asked me to find a tour manager for him, he wanted to come to Italy to play in 2019. that made me sad twice ... r.i.p. Jeff i still play some of your licks that i transcribed from a 1987 gig that i recorded in my town
He never would have made it. Heroin destroyed him. Everybody thinks he died of pneumonia but my father is Jeff’s Neigjbor, Jeff died of a fentanyl heroin OD
Not sure about the pickups etc but it is definitely a Leo Quan Badass 2 bridge! I fit one of those to every Fender bass I own - they make a big difference to the sustain/overtones!
@xquesmuah Thanks man! And thanks for getting me to watch this clip again. I was kind of down this evening, and now I feel at least 3X better. Music is the best drug.
woooow, this is a solo and a half, he sorta reminds me of jaco in a way. .this guy has really got great groove and rhythm and tighness on the bass, he knows just what he is doing all the way through, and is very confindent about his every step
Infuckincredible!! I remember watching this at least a couple of years ago and it's still amazes me how, at no point in this solo, do I loose interest.
Cool solo/jam. Also, might sound odd, but I'm pretty sure I have literally never seen a Fender Jazz pickup layout with a Precision pickguard before now. Also nice to see Dave Weckl playing outside of an instruction video.
I'm pretty sure I saw him with Adam Nusbaum on drums, Michael Brecker on sax and Mike Stern on guitar, some time in the '80s I'm thinking. Anyway, he's a beastly player!
@drinksquash i havent got a special style....i mostly listen to metal - rock(Breaking Benjamin,Vertical Horizor,Three days grace) but i also love era and this kind of music...
actually it isn't a P Bass in the classic sense because there is no "split pick-up" of the Precision Bass. He has installed two Jazz type of custom pickups. The body is bone dry vintage wood, and the neck radius would be that of a Precision bass-he certainly has great pluck!
Jeff playing always reminds me why I still play a 4 string. There is plenty of harmony available on a 20 fret jazz bass.Jeff was a monster cat.
This is SUCH a fantastic solo by Jeff....And I LOVE when he just shifts into overdrive at 1.39 ....There are SO many great ideas here....5 stars and another 5. Love it Jeff!
I remember reading that Jaco told him once: 'Jeff, you are the only one that copies my stuff and doesn't sound like me' :-)

When I made this edit for a Jeff in 2013 it relaunched his career - th-cam.com/video/SU-QUlg0BgY/w-d-xo.html
I my
think he’s the best player at sounding like Jaco that doesn’t copy him..
Beautifil. Amazing, unique bass player. You were great Jeff. Rest in Peace Sir.
I worked with Jeff in 2013 - I had an idea for an edit. It put him back on the radar in 2013 th-cam.com/video/SU-QUlg0BgY/w-d-xo.html

Jeff did it so quickly, i thought maybe he was getting some (side of) nose oil. I know some guys who tap that stuff.
Jeff sounds great! Much respect!

I'm pretty sure I saw him with Adam Nusbaum on drums, Michael Brecker on sax and Mike Stern on guitar, some time in the '80s I'm thinking. Anyway, he's a beastly player!
@IronCobra22 Actually, he's wiping the grease from his nose to keep his fingers "lubed" up, so to speak.
Wow, Weckl with a mullet back in the day. Andrews never gets enough attention these days. Such a great player.....
