      It makes sense, considering any native bows probably wouldn't have done much against conquistador armor. Same way a knight fears a war hammer more than an arming sword.

      Well probably the arrowheads of the tribes were perhaps just made from stone like obsidian, Flint, chert and other knappable stones meaning they wouldn't be effective against metal armor and this probably lead them to using slings as they probably saw it could cause more damage than the bow and technically a bow and arrow can pierce armor steel armor but u have to build specific arrowheads that allows for that kind of penetration and not use stone for the arrowheads however considering they probably didn't discover metal yet they wouldn't be using such arrowheads that were armor piercing but the sling and stone were probably extremely effective as they could deliver massive shock from the weight and speed of the projectile along with size hell they could easily have made trebuchets too wich would allow them to sling way larger rocks into the enemy dealing massive damage regardless of the armor so yeah that's about it

    You hit the nail on the head with this one. Too many folks who believe the bow or even an atlatl would be efficient in the hands of a starving and untrained individual in a survival situation. Primitive trapping is the first go-to. I’m comfortable with the bow, only dabbled with atlatls in the past. Great video dude 👍.

    • @Rokaize
      @Rokaize 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      What do you mean impractical?
      Rock slings are devastating weapons. And were used in warfare for thousands of years. The Romans thought so highly of it that they hired the famous slingers from the Balearic Islands as mercenaries.

    Shooting a bison with a bow reminds me of an experience I had years ago. I had read a hunting article in a famous bow hunting magazine back in the early 80's. The writer was the editor for the magazine if I remember correctly. He hunted on the Sioux Reservation in SD and bragged up how he took a bison with his recurve, and what a great experience it was to have accomplished such a feat. He put 3 arrows into the beast and the article got a little vague after that. Well...just happens that I talked which the tribal ranger that took him out. He said that he (the ranger) had to shoot the critter as it was running all over the countryside with arrows sticking out of it from all directions. Seems to me he said 5 or 6. He also stated that it looked like a porcupine and had plenty of life.

    Great video Ryan! I pretty much agree with the every major point you made. Both weapons are not ideal for short term survival purposes, especially if the user is unskilled. For long term primitive living, the better choice still depends on user skill as well as the game available in that specific environment.

    Great video. Another piece of the pie that's stark to me being from Australia is what materials are available for spear or arrow heads. Australia has very little stone for good heads (only one region has chalcedony and is known for beautiful points, called the Kimberley region, the rest of the nation used quartz to my knowledge). I'm convinced that the lack of good sharp heads are why Australian Aboriginals used very large atlatls. The mass needed for good penetration when a hardwood point was the technology available is much more than that for an obsidian head. So yeah for me where I'm at, a largish atlatl and 8-10 foot spears are what I would want. I've used a few (not hunting) and I find the larger size much more accurate too. And very powerful.

    Could you do a video about primitive warfare/disputes, and what people might have fought over?

    • @veronder
      @veronder 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The topic of dogs would be a tough one because domestication was equally thier doing, not exactly clear cut either.
      And also one would have to speak specifically towards certain tribes because some only made use others kept a health stock and others saw the dog as a tribal member.
      Also it gets pretty cruel by today's standards because for some tribes who's dogs where tribal members breeding deffered based on the human companion prestige in the tribe, the dogs prestige in the tribe and if the dog was lead or not, reason I mention it gets pretty cruel is because dependent on a few factors would the dog be eaten or not, buried or not, bait (live and dead).
      I ought to have said he'd have to do a series on it and kept it at that. Sorry for long winded comment

    One thing I'd add though is that you don't have to have a pretty polished perfectly bow to start a survival situation. When I entered the Army survival, my first step was to find about a 1.5" diameter springy maple sapling and used paracord for a string. Sure, the paracord stretched in time, but I used it for a whole 4 week course and made several types of arrows to handle different game requirements. Simple reed shafts with wooden blunts for small game (quick and easy to make), 4' long serrated or sawtooth arrow for spear fishing and waterfowl taking and several more typical length arrows in case medium sized game came along. It literally took me 30 minutes to make the initial bow and maybe another hour to get a couple utility arrows around. In my survival pack I happen to carry a small zebco fishing reel and that came in handy for taking the water fowl & fishing. My attempts with an Atlatl up here in the north, where we don't have heavy river cane or bamboo make it much more difficult to find long straight spear materials, so where you are in the world will also come into this question.

    • @ShadeSlayer1911
      @ShadeSlayer1911 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can also use fire to straighten crooked sticks, but only so much. If the only trees around don't even give you decently straight shafts, then no chance with an atlatl.

    Personally, i would go with a plain rock or a wooden spear as my "starter weapon". They are very easy to make (or in the case of a rock, no building at all), can take down smaller animals and fish with relative ease, and both are easier to use than an atlatl. As time goes on, I would stick to a spear with a stone head for less experienced users, but either a bow or atlatl if they know how to use it/ can learn it in the situation. Another point, the higher poundage of a draw weight, the harder it is to make a bow that holds up, particularly the string. It might be better to use multiple weapons. Like a spear for larger game and fish, while a bow for smaller, agile game due to draw weight limitations, but with a clear accuracy and speed advantage. I know that this video is for atlatls and bows, but thats just a rough idea for what i personally would think. Wonderful video.

I was surprised by the fact that it had no checks/cracks but it at some point warped and now the string sits way off.. it shoots hard when it shoots straight lol it will never have a consistent shot.. 1 out of 10 arrows fly true and fall on target.. so I'm gonna go cut some more shagbark staves and try again.. but I'm working on my atlatl now as well.. I watched most of your videos and some clay Hayes and the guys who claim to be scientific when "fire hardening" bows.. I'd say I spent roughly 48 hours reading and watching content on bow making and I got damn close.. it's going to be trial and error for me.. plus I do not have any power tools or tiller trees.. I'm using a tomahawk and a Leatherman wave+.. nothing else.. I want some stone tools!!! I need you to teach classes!

    Question: Bow or Atl-Atl to harvest meat? Answer: Trapping has proven to be my most reliable hunting method. I have had success with home-built bows and arrows, so if I had the luxury of time and the right resources I'd try to make arrows and a bow. Simple, unfletched arrows might be good enough for hunting birds at close range. I'd probably make a thrusting spear first as it is relatively quick to make and it is a means of despatching larger animals in traps.... and it might make me feel safer as I was wandering in the scrub. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and all the interesting videos.... best wishes from New Zealand.

      Look for poop. Become good at identifying various types of poop. Research and study of this. Look for trails, they are a lot smaller than you think they will be, think inches not feet. Look for disturbed vegetation, grass, small plants that indicate something moved through, sometimes this can be very faint but if you can discern any disturbance or different coloring or shades of coloring it will mean something. Study tracks of everything from mice to hooved animals, cats or felines, dogs or canines, people tracks. Study your own tracks. Walk through an area, grass, bushes, forest etc then circle back and see what disturbances you made. Keep doing all this consistently and you will become better and better at "seeing" what passed through there.

    *Which weapons/tools are better for long term hunting & survival?
    1. Traps for small animals & Nets for fishing
    2. A simple spear, w/ barbed point(s), for shallow fishing or slower small varmints
    (He didn't say this)
    3. A bow takes more skill to build, but it's faster & more accurate for small to medium animals (hunt from hiding)
    4. An atlatl spear has more power to penetrate larger animals, or to go into deep water.
    *But you have to have the proficiency and skill to use the weapon, either one. It takes practice to learn to be effective.

      The sling is a HORRIBLE weapon to use in a survival situation! It takes years to get even semi good with it in a non chaotic environment, not to mention when your hungry and your strength isn’t where it should be to be able to sling a bullet hard enough to do any good it makes it almost suicide to pick that over something like a spear or throwing club, I’d like to add that the sling losses it’s usability when you start getting into denser and denser areas such as swamps, Forrest, and jungles making it impossible to literally operate, but if your in a relatively open area and you have the practice (which most people don’t and won’t have time to get) your golden, but here’s the even worse part about a sling: it’s a big weapon. By that I mean it requires big movements for long periods of time to use which brings a lot of attention to yourself and it’s not exactly quiet either. Think about it. Do you really want to have to swing something around making a whooshing sound for a few seconds while your trying to be quiet and not draw attention to yourself? If your answer is yes your not on my team but slings do have range so again if your in an open area and you’ve go some sort of cover such as big rocks you might be good. Basically what I’m trying to say is there are too many things that have to be perfect for it to be remotely useful…

    what about the difference between an atlatl and a javelin for example? the javelin should be much quicker to build although a bit heftier? would be nice to see a comparison video of both a handmade atlatl and javelin for hunting with energy outputs, effective range, anything else you can think of!!

    • @Exotic-ps7vi
      @Exotic-ps7vi 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      If you consider a javelin a thrown spear then you could also consider the atlatl an advancement of that tech.
      The world record for a javelin throw is 104m. The world record for an atlatl throw is 258m. So that's at least distance that the atlatl has the advantage. The reason is the atlatl acts as an extention of your arm. A lever of sorts. It allows you to multiply the force of the throw by almost double if not more.
      Personally, and I'm no pro with either weapon, I would choose the atlatl over javelin any day.
      Now *maybe* a thick enough javelin could be used as more of a spear for possible melee defense. Helpful for if *you* are the prey. But as a hunter an atlatl would be superior imo.

    Where's the source for atlatls penetrating spanish 16th century breastplates? Would love to read more about that, because frankly I think that is impossible, and from all the modern testing done it would certainly be impossible. It definitely would have been a deadly weapon if employed en-mass, mortared or not, because I do believe the impact would be substantial whether it hit arm or or not, and if it didn't hit steel armour it probably would cut clean through; similar to how a longbow was devastating against armoured knights employed en mass, even though they could not penetrate solid plates of steel.
    European armour up until the 17th century was actually some of the best armour you could wear; that much is just fact; by the 15th & 16th century, Europeans had mastered armour-crafting and discovered what is pretty much the most effective armour-type for traditional blade based weapons. That said, it was the canon that truly made the difference to the conquistador's conquests, all things considered. I can't imagine being someone from a culture who had never seen gunpowder weapons, and then facing 16th century European gunpowder weapons that had been being developed and evolved upon already for centuries.

Blow guns are faster than bows , bows are faster than atlatl, atlatl is faster than a large spear.

    I thought the very concept of a prepper was that they prepared for these situations, which would include deciding on a bow or atlatl, getting one and learning how to use it? Anyone who hasn't done anything at all in advance, and finds themselves having to flee the city and head for the woods, is gonna be SOL for the most part. The last few years we've seen this prepper movement spawn all kinds of industries, "experts" and their advice, gear, etc. mostly for something highly unlikely to ever really happen, all Netflix movies aside. I wonder if we have true electoral justice and the Dems' election theft is overturned, will we have enough mayhem to create true bug out events? My guess is no, there will be mass violence and law enforcement, military and natl. guard will need to get involved. People in blue cities like Shitcago, L.A., NYC, Portland and Seattle are really gonna be screwed, and they'll deserve it for electing the wimps who've allowed it all to happen over the last few months. Cities with armed populations will make short work of BLM and Antifa, or any other anarchist scum.
