Nice reaction guys. A couple of things then: The name of the band comes from J.R.R. Tolkien's 'The Silmarillion'. The song 'Easter' was written about the Irish uprising during the Easter period of 1916, and guitarist Steve Rothery's solo was recorded as a single take. You take care

Lovely info. I would add that Steve H wrote this song about the Troubles (1960 - 1998), not just the Irish uprising in 1916. Easter, here again - it is a reference to that it has been many, many, many Easters and still there is no peace in Northern Ireland (when it was written). There must come an Easter ("surely now") when this will be over ("when the blind will see"). At least that is how I interpret it going on Steve's own comments about the song.

Saw them live twice in Bremen, on their Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws tours. But i was a big fan of Fish and after he left i bought one more album, and while i still really loved the guitar from Steven Rothery i just was no fan of the new singer.
So my tip are songs like "Script for a jesters tear", "Sugar Mice", "Chelsea Monday" and "Misplaced Childhood" .. yes it is in the end just one song, they even announced it on the concert as their last song, and then it was the whole album 😄

Great reaction, thanks! You can’t go wrong with Marillion. The guitarist, Steve Rothery, is extremely sensitive in his playing. This is from the first album with the new vocalist, Steve Hogarth, after the charismatic singer Fish left the band, you should experience them both. A couple of suggestions with Hogarth:
    - Neverland (from Marbles)
    - Invisible man (from Marbles)
    - Fantastic place (from Marbles)
    - Hard as love (acoustic version from Less is More)
    - The Space (from Seasons End)
    - Ocean Cloud (from Marbles)
    With Fish:
    - Hotel hobbies/Warm wet circles/That time of the night (from Clutching at Straws)
    - Fugazi (from Fugazi)
    - Forgotten sons (from Script for a Jester’s tear)
    - Assassing ( from Fugazi)
    - Emerald lies (from Fugazi)
    - Script for a Jester’s tear (from Script...)

"Marillion, unlike many other bands, really m o v e s people." I once read that statement, probably on their own website. Very true words. Personally I do not like that style of music very much, but Marillion are masters of their craft. You simply have to acknowledge genius when you encounter it. Another great reaction guys.... And yet another great band. So, its pronounced Marilly-on, if that makes sense! Once again a band with a super skilled guitarist, Steve Rothery, a master of very expressive and emotionally charged solos. Now as they have been around since the late 70's there is a huge back catalogue of material to delve into. My choices would be - Neverland, This Strange Engine, Out Of This World, Afraid Of Sunlight, Slainte Mhath (live Fish tribute), Three Minute Boy. In my opinion the live versions are the ones to go for, and as I'm more an H (Steve Hogarth) era fan than a Fish era fan (controversial view I know!!), I therefore prefer more recent concerts. As for similar bands, Pineapple Thief, Airbag, Spock's Beard, Porcupine Tree, IQ, are a few of my favourites. Cheers Bob....

Marillion has 2 periods. The beginning where they became world famous, with lead singer Fish. He quit the band in 1988 and the band got another singer then. Easter is from the 2nd period.
Check the first period. Albums: Misplaced Childhood (best album ever according to me), Clutching at straws.

I suggest to you the first three songs on Marillion's Clutching at Straws (because they never stop) : Hotel Hobbies , Warm Wet Circles and That Time Of The Night (The Short Straw). Its the last studio album , an excellent one , by Fish ! The great classic album is Misplaced Chilhood , chosen as the fourth greatest concept album of all time by Classic Rock in 2003. This was the first album with their new singer Steve Hogarth who followed Fish. IMHO the earlier Marillion with Fish was more edgy. Marillion (Mar-Rill-Eeon) are known as Britain's Best Kept Secret. They have been recording for 40 years and show no signs of stopping. Care from their latest album (An Hour Before It's Dark) is one of the greatest songs ever written.
They need to be experienced live though, so, might I suggest live versions of The Great Escape, Neverland, This Strange Engine or Gaza. Guitarist Steve Rothery is one of the most underrated guitar players on the planet

Great reaction to a great song. I like your energy and vibes. I love Marillion and have seen them many times including a Marillion weekend for which I traveled from the US to the UK. They are an excellent band that have two eras based on different lead vocalists. Both eras are fantastic in their own way. Neo prog would be the way that most would describe their musical genre but to me it is just good music. I am curious to see how much progressive rock you two will explore on this journey as it is probably my favorite genre. My recommendations would be endless! Keep up the good work. Thanks for your time and effort to share what you love.

Have your wife react to Marillion’s “Neverland.” If you want her to have dreamy, love-filled feeling that makes her swoon, Neverland is your ticket to a romantic feeling. “The Great Escape” is a great alternative.

If you want a similar vibe but maybe a little heavier, then have a look at polish band Riverside. They deserve alot more attention than they receive. I think you will really enjoy them based on what I've seen you react to thus far.

Hi, you two, thanks for sharing tears when there is music of such a quality and beauty going on. And about Marillion? There is a LOT to discover, you have so much joy, so many moments ahead of you, I would envy you if I couldn't say myself having enjoyed them since 40 years now. Seeing them life ususally means 2 and a half hour of AWEsome time spend well.
At the end you called for suggesting more bands, like them. I want to recomment you a Scottish 5-piece that had along hibernation in between and are nearly unknown. But try "Pallas" with their song "The Sanctuary". Their material in general is harder, they look like a metal band except the singer, who reminds me of Fergal Sharkey of the Undertones.
    Enjoy :)

It's 2021 now. Marillion is stll one of the best LIFE bands there is. Steve Hogarth (h) is 62 of something like that, and still is one of the best vocalist ever. Listen to there Life album at the Royal Albert Hall. And be amased.

I first heard about Marillion in high school in ‘85 but did not get into them until a cover band played ‘Incommunicado’ at a Penn State bar I frequented in ‘89. I saw them on the Holidays in Eden tour and Fish live in ‘95. Love this band.

What a fab reaction! It’s so wonderful to see people who really know and appreciate music the way you two do... I saw Marillion live at my University in 1984... I was very lucky. This reaction has made me add Marillion to my list for a vinyl collection that I’ve started...I can’t recommend vinyl enough... on a good stack system.. it’s so immediate, present, visceral.

Season's End, Splintering Heart, Alone Again in the Lap of Luxury, Afraid of Sunlight, This Strange Engine, Interior Lulu, Invisible Man, Fantastic Place, Neverland, The Man from the Planet Marzipan, Real Tears for Sale, and The Sky Above the Rain. Should keep you busy for a while!😁

I've had a look through the comments and I can't see that anyone has mentioned Grendel yet. It's one of their very early tracks that was not on an album although it did subsequently appear on 'B' Sides Themselves. It tells the story of the Nordic Beowulf saga. There are critics who point to a section that is extremely similar to part of the Apocalypse in 9/8 passage in Supper's Ready and I think that is in large part responsible for a number of people who said that Marillion are a Genesis copy band. I think that's extremely unfair - Marillion had very much more than that to offer and were/are a fantastic band in their own right. If it was ever true (which I don't think it was), it is certainly not true now. Even taking into account the 'inspiration' from Supper's Ready, I think Grendel is an excellent track and worth exploring, even though it weighs in at just over 17 minutes long.

Really enjoyed watching your reaction. This is from Marillion's first album without Fish who was the previous vocalist and songwriter. Seasons End is a very good album but the one before with Fish on lead vocals called Clutching at Straws is a truly incredible album in my opinion and well worth listening to.

Saw them open for Rush back in 86 for the Power Windows tour in Buffalo. Awesome show.
There are 2 different lead singers for Marillion. The original was named Fish. The singer on this album is Steve Hogarth, or Steve H, as the guitar player is Steve Rothery. :)

This is probably the most beautiful song I've ever heard. It was probably in the end of 1994, I was 14 years old, and Seasons End was the first Marillion album I heard. I remember finding the first song a bit strange - I had never listened anything like that - but Easter (the second song) hypnotized me. Man, what a wonderful song! Everything is perfect, the acoustic guitar, the keyboards, the voice and the guitar solo is a masterpiece.
It was very nice listening to it with you guys! 🙂

I found Marillion early in the Fish days. But I love both eras of the band equally. Another great emotional song from around this period is called Estonia. You really can't go wrong across all the decades of this band's music.

Marillion is my favorite band ever. Especially in the era with the first singer Fish. Although the second singer era Steve Hogarth the band has great songs like this one. I would recommend listening to the whole album Misplaced Childhood from begging to the last song.

Hi guys. I’m a little late in replying here but I grew up listening to this band, I’m 56 now and saw them play live but only when Fish was fronting the band. Try to investigate his solo material if you get a chance too, you won’t be disappointed. But yes Easter is a truly wonderful track with Steve Rothery’s unmistakable guitar solo, just one of so many that will rip your heart right out with it’s pure emotion. Albums I recommend - well all of them LOL but with Fish, Misplaced Childhood and Clutching at Straws. With Steve Hogarth on vocals, Brave and Afraid of Sunlight. And congratulations on having such great taste and a discerning ear!! Enjoy.

Season's End was the first album with Steve Hogarth. I had been a fan from 1982/3 when they were still playing the college circuit and had not released a single album. I don't know how many live shows I went to in the mid 80's? Folks of my era were horrified that Fish had left the band. Your first listen was one of anticipation. I played this the first time with feelings of utter dread, how bad would it be? My Marillion would never be the same again. I was utterly blown away by the first bars of "The King of Sunset Town" and by the time Easter came along was completely hooked. Marillion has been the soundtrack of my life and I hope it continues.

I hitchhiked to Ottawa ON from Trenton ON when I was 19 to see Marillion at Barrymore's. They were my favourite band at the time, and I had a chance to meet them after the show. I thought it would be a hi and a handshake, but I ended up talking to guitarist Steve Rothery for about an hour - he sure can talk. :D Mark the keyboard player also took me up on stage (after the show, of course) so I could take a look at his rig (I am a keyboardist). Mark was a little standoffish compared to Steve, who was warm and welcoming. I started drifting away from Marillion a few albums after Steve Hogarth took over on vocals. Though his voice is more pleasing than Fish's, it has an odd thickness to it that just never caught my ear. I lost interest after H's fourth album with the band, though I am sure the music after that was still great. I had just moved on.
If you want to check out a masterpiece from Marillion, listen to Misplaced Childhood in its entirety. It's front to back AMAZING. If you can get your hands on Steven Wilson's 5.1 remix/master of it, do so.

Marillion (maril-leon) were inducted in to the Prog-rock hall of fame, and guitarist is a legend. love both vocalists for different reasons, check out Fish's latest solo album! they were cinsidered the more accessible genesis in the 90's but definitely checkout Neverland, and Asylum Satellite, or any song on the F.E.A.R album, Sunlight is also one amazing goosebump among so many Happiness is the road!
