Easter is indeed a kind of ode to Ireland. This song is from the album Seasons End (1989), the first album with this singer after Fish, the previous singer, left the band. The guitarist is known for his great guitar solos, just like Pink Floyd's David Gilmour. The band made a lot of good and beautiful songs, too many to mention, but try Neverland ..., great guitar and vocals!! th-cam.com/video/l3NhNz9-EOA/w-d-xo.html
You Should check out 'The Space' live at the Royal Albert Hall , check out the words on last section of the song starting with: Everybody...... (a message for now more than ever !!!) You'll see !!!
Marillion are a top progressive rock band. English. Pioneers of fan funded albums early this century. Household name in the UK in the eighties and have maintained a loyal fan base. Supported Rush, deep purple, dream theater and Queen over the years. Latest album Fear was a success in the UK commercially. You might enjoy Gaza live or Neverland. They have no link to Ireland nor do they usually play with the string quartet. The guitarist is amazing. Fans of the original line can get a little agitated at times, could be the reason for no comments.
Here Ryan, in Marillion you have the "successors" of Genesis, formed in the late 1970s, bringing prog rock into the 1980s and further on; first with the fantastic singer "Fish", then with Steve Hogarth on vocals after Fish left. Hogarth is also a great singer/performer and is still with the band, as in this performance. You should definately check out more from Marillion, great band. Suggestions to start with (songs) - Forgotten Sons - Fugazi - Hotel Hobbies/Warm Wet Circles/That Time of the Night - The Space - The Invisible Man - Neverland 😎👍
Marillion is one of my favourite bands. After Genesis and Pink Floyd. They began in 1982 with Script for a Jester's tear (very prog Genesis oriented), with their first singer Fish. LOVE THEM so much. Steve Hogarth the singer on this one replace Fish in 1989 on the album Season's end, which this marvelous song Easter (about Ireland) is from. Try "The space" from the same venue and the same album, you'll be thrilled. Try anything from Marillion, it's all gold for ears man. Steve Rothery is a killer guitar player and Steve Hogarth has a voice of an angel. th-cam.com/video/Nm_TcAAySbc/w-d-xo.html
A truly underrated band for sure. They have so many awesome songs. This song is supposedly about the “troubles”. Being a vegan for over 10 years now I see a totally different meaning.
This is a song about the war in Northern Ireland between the Irish Republican Army and the English. Hundreds, if not thousands, of people were killed. It was before your time, but not mine, although it is very much referenced in the TV series "Sons of Anarchy". Marillion is the best band in the world. Easter is indeed, a "nice song", but they've produced dozens of better ones, mostly in the "Hogarth era" starting in 1989.
They're a fascinating band. Started off as a bit of a Genesis rip-off but when Steve Hackett's drummer joined they made a giant leap in their production and sound. They became very much their own thing but you could always spot a bit of Genesis in there somewhere. The singer here is Irish and the song is about "the troubles" but they don't usually have the Irish sound. It's a bit of a Peter v Phil thing about their singers Fish and Steve Hogarth, I love them both for different reasons. Marillion sound different depending on where you dip into their catalogue, fortunately they're so consistently good and sincere that you're going to find a treat.
@@jeffchristie1541 I've been a Marrilion fan since before they had a record out, how did I end up with that belief? I have a dim memory of him saying he was Irish from when Easter was released, maybe he was saying he was of Irish descent. Never the less, thanks for putting me right.
@@direnova6284 he probably is of Irish decent it's funny as sometimes when he sings I can hear that Irish brogue but he's definitely of Cumbrian stock.
@@jeffchristie1541 Actually Mark Kelly is the Irish one. Just finished reading his book (reading Ian Moseley's now !). Liked 'em with Fish, Love 'em with Hogarth.
Ryan, get up to Montreal Canada and experience the next Marillion Convention. 3 days of performances. Worth every minute and penny spent. Friday night concert featuring a full album+++, Saturday am 5k run with Mark Kelly (keyboardist), Saturday afternoon the band splits up and plays with different bands at local pubs pub crawl, Saturday evening "A-Z" concert, Sunday afternoon "Swap The Band" where amateur musicians fill in one at a time and play a Marillion song with the band in front of 3k fans, Sunday evening full concert. Monday is a day to rest or get back home!!!
If you enjoyed Easter, i recommand you these titles, you should love them : Neverland : th-cam.com/video/l3NhNz9-EOA/w-d-xo.html The Space : th-cam.com/video/Nm_TcAAySbc/w-d-xo.html Gaza : th-cam.com/video/uaBVTtt53FA/w-d-xo.html Season’s end : th-cam.com/video/s9GEuFDGSYg/w-d-xo.html
Listening to this as an intro to Marillion is like listening to Land of Confusion as an intro to Genesis. You REALLY need to listen to Script From A Jester’s Tear or Misplaced Childhood.
Because they get better with age, like good wine! And this version at the RAH is absolutely magical, thanks to the quartet, flute and french horn, who were all great values and made it even more perfect than it was already.
Take a shortcut to heaven : Listen to Marillion an find a better way of life.

Marillion - one of the greatest bands in the world :)
THE greatest of all - but don’t tell anyone 😉
You have NO IDEA what you just struck upon with this band! I plead you to listen to more of them. I promise you that you will thank me later!!!

Pete Trewavas, the bassist, is also a member of Transatlantic (with Neal Morse, Roine Stolt, and Mike Portnoy). Another band worth checking out.
Please listen to more Marillion, you won’t be disappointed especially if you appreciate the beautiful guitar work of Steve R :)
Someday you should take the same journey into Marillion than you took through Genesis. They really deserve it.
Wowz that was great love to see more of this band that singer is so charismatic

Other groups you should definitely check out: Seo Linn, Runrig, Capercaille.

IMO second best only to the brilliant Genesis
When did Phil Collins join Marillion?
why the versions when the musicans are 60 and older? Why not versions when they were on their high point?
I did what the patron requested.
But that's a beautiful version of the song!!
Because they get better with age, like good wine! And this version at the RAH is absolutely magical, thanks to the quartet, flute and french horn, who were all great values and made it even more perfect than it was already.
