    Anthrax (and skilled drummer Charlie Benante) taught the world how to appreciate the enthusiastic thrash-metal sound they helped create in the 1980s. Here, we speak with Benante and get some critical intel on the origins of their brand of heavy metal.

      The best drummers tend to look like that-like they handle the sticks with ease. It's necessary from what I learned-I'm a guitar player but my drummer taught me that metal drummers often use the physical dynamics of the kit itself when it comes to playing fast. A super-tight grip wouldn't help there-gotta keep things relatively loose so the bounceback from striking the drum heads can do its thing naturally, if that makes sense.

    Towards the end, he's putting triplets in fast double bass... that is insane! When the Big 4 did Motorhead's Overkill, and Charlie took over on drums doing that technique... watch Lar's face!

    Not many thrash players have a sound or style. Very few heavy drummers have any distinct way of playing. Still think Gene Hoglan is the best example of a drummer who can do thrash and metal and its always instantly noticeable when its him playing. Also thrash was pretty much replaced by power metal, which adopted the vocals of hair metal lol. Keeping two dead genres alive.

      FanaticalDrummer Richard Christy is an example of a really creative heavy drummer. Listen to “Flesh and the Power It Holds” by Death and you’ll see what I mean. Hoglan also played for Death too.

      Gene is the most distinct drummer of the thrash....but when hear Deaths album Sounds of Perseverance....you can hear where Richard took some notes on Genes playing....but in all....all good thrash/metal drummers have to be noted....it takes dedication and stamina with an open mind to be able to play this style

      Dave Lombardo is the most distinctive drummer in thrash metal, not Gene. You can always tell Dave by his unusual rolls and fills and 16th and 32nd notes on the ride, as well as from his double bass playing, of course. But it's actually the first two things that really give him his signature style. Lars also has a unique and recognizable style. He may not have the technical skills and chops of Benante, Lombardo, Hoglan, etc, but he comes up with some really cool and interesting beats and fills - For Whom The Bell Tolls is a perfect example of this.

      HinjuRock I would say Hoglan is the best at Death metal drumming (his drumming on Individual Thought Patterns and Symbolic is fucking fantastic) and Lombardo is the best at thrash drumming.

      HinjuRock I mean there’s some interesting fills in For Whom The Bell Tolls but the beats are pretty simple and straightforward.

    I’ve never understood why Anthrax gets the most hate out of the Big 4. They’re my personal favorite. They’re able to be heavy and menacing, but also have a little fun with it as well.

    dead kennedy's drummer DH Peligro was the first to play that fast punk tempo. before anyone, it comes from Polka music... not the fucking Ramones like a lot of ppl say. Fast as a Shark by Rage is ok song, Lost in the Ice is their best tune. Wanna see fast punk, try playing Strung Out's drums... or Canadian punk band Belvedere... insane speed... single kick heel toe technique too hahah , i've talked to their drummer after a show. Patrice from Martyr is a sick Canadian drummer too, he's in a few bands now i forget which ones.

      A china fills up more space in metallicas music. A ride would let the bottom drop out. It's a great tool to keep a wash of sound. I love rides but only up until ride the lightning. ;)

    • @thedondeluxe6941
      @thedondeluxe6941 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      It also fills up some higher, more annoying frequencies :-) I actually have the same china as Lars Ulrich and I'm a big fan of it, but it wouldn't kill the sound if he used a ride now and then! China The Lightning! :-)
