I fell in love with 1980 Shogun when I was 5 years old back in early 1983. Years later when I watched it in the late 90s in its entirety, I was surprised too find out that the Battle of Sekigahara ended on October 21st, 1600, which is my birthday. Amazing.
I love the way Yuki Meguro acts in this scene. You really think Richard Chamberlain has a real sword and is really trying to commit seppuku. Phenomenal acting. I know it's different in the book but I'm so glad Blackthorne and Omi-San ended up, if not actual friends, at least friendly towards one another.
Ā great scene. I have stopped watching the remake because it omits scenes like these that make Blackthorn strong, brave, smart and capable.... Clearly that just can't be allowed in 2024. I hate how the writers have distorted the source material... And the character assassination of 2024 Mariko is twice as bad.

Hai, Dan30.06-San. You are 100% correct. Omi-San's hand is bleeding so much that they have to wrap it. And of course, Anjin-San, was also barely cut by the sword. And Igurashi was present as well, and Lord Yabu reprimanded him harshly for saying that Anjin-San was bluffing. Great scene in the book, and great scene in Shogun 1980. Arigatou Gozaimashita. 👍
I completely agree the new serious is so obviously trying to take away any opportunity to show Blackthorn as a strong character. It marginalizes him and makes him look stupid and one dimensional. It’s a slap in the face to James Clavells book Shogun. It’s sickening to see really.

What I love about Shogun 1980 is that they were all bad-asses: from Toranaga to Blackthorne to Ishido to Naga to Hiromatsu to Buntaro to Martin Alvito to Captain Ferriera to Omi-San to Muraji. They were all very tough men, which is what I think men should be today. Shogun 2024 marginalizes Blackthorne, and makes him weak, and makes Mariko 2024 an Amazonian Warrior, like Mulan. When Shogun came out they were trying to tell a story not spread propaganda about unreal personality traits in people . All the cast were amazing and nothing was done to minimize Or take away from any of the characters in the 1980s show. Again never imagined they would write a completely different show today. Awful just trash.

Shogun, the novel, is brutal and tragic but also has a real sense of adventure and romance. The 1980 series wasn't perfect but it did capture those feelings. Shogun 2024 is depressing sludge, and yes utterly reduces Blackthorn to a joke ( which insults the book, and the real life man he's based on). However I would say the character who has been disrespected the most is Mariko - the people writing her in 2024 clearly misunderstood what made her so strong, brave and smart - because she's none of those things in the new series. I agree, it's sickening.
@@RRTNZ I agree it’s a dark story now cast in a dark rainy and depressing place. I loved Japan because of the 1980s version this version makes me think Japan is an unpleasant and gloomy place. I get it old Japan kinda brutal but besides that it seemed pretty unreal in a cool way.
The new series completely eviscerates Blackthorne as a warrior in his own right. We know he sailed with Drake, has been in many battles at sea, and on land, and we also know he can brawl when he has to as well. He's piss weak and practically an after thought in this new show, which is absurd. It is entirely the arrival of Anjin-san that provides the catalyst Toranaga needs to become Shogun. I like the new show for different reasons but while watching it I basically have decided to not think about the book (or this show - which is far far superior).
Contemplating a bit further, here's another of my thought about the 2024 version: It's authentic if members of noble families in Japan spoke rudely like they are stereotypical Yakuza in a lot of films. So different from all my Japanese friends and colleagues who are almost always polite in most situations. It's authentic if westerners behaved like how western based characters are portrayed in a lot of Japanese anime (loud, big mouthed, boisterous, rude, obnoxious, etc.). Pointing out two more character assassinations in the recent episodes: 1. Buntaro may be arrogant and dislike Blackthorne, but no way he would have drawn a sword at Blackthorne's neck without permission from Toranaga. 2. Naga may be rash and hot headed, but no way he would try to assassinate his uncle like that with an ambush. Especially if his father's troops are surrounded by his uncle's troops.

The moment I heard about the remake I was afraid of this, that they would disrespect the book. I'll dispise the 2024 remake without regrets.
