I use a wide array of 1:72 figures from a variety of manufacturers; any chance you could post a list of which figures to use the PVA mixture on and which to simply under coat with primer? Thanks!

Came across your site and it brought back memories of painting those Airfix 1/72 figures. Frustrating that the paint jumped off I went onto 54mm figs. of sryrene plastic or lead castings. Also became interested in FLATS, mostly 30mm.
One tip I would like to pass on regarding polythene plastic figures to help paint stick is to 'swish' them around in small container of sand, this acts as a fine abrasive, then wash in a strong detergent, let dry then undercoat or basecoat as desired.
This won't stop paint from coming off if the figure is flexed but will defeat that 'teflon' feeling. Cheers Eh!

i have used a number of types of undercoating techniques including the PVA/White Primer technique.. Recently, for simplicity I started a new technique which seems to work. After washing and cleaning, I paint on Vallejo Matt Varnish #520, after that dries the figures are no longer 'shiny', then after completely dry, I paint on Vallejo Primer (either black, white or gray depending on the base uniform color), after that dries, I paint on one more coat of the Primer, being careful NOT to use to much Primer to obliterate the detail.. I wait at least 12 hour, some suggest 24 hours, to let the Primer dry. Then they are are ready to paint. So far, no chipping or flaking. Let me know if you or anyone has an opinion on this technique. Thank you.

Happened to me as well with ceasar models. Primed them and they are sticky forever :D
Now I am very careful and do a test primer for that plastic. I am wondering how long will it take till I see the reaction and it becomes sticky? 24h is enough I hope?

I prefer to apply undercoats using an aerosol. So successful this that I tried to apply varnish to finished models in the same way. Alas I confused the can with a can of white and had oversprayed my own painting before mistake realised

I use a wood stain for my base coat. It's thin enough to leave the details. I don't bother brushing it on. I simple dip the figure in and set it on a sheet of foil that's been crumpled and re-flattened. It takes a day or so to dry thoroughly, but anticipation is part of the fun.

Is that the only thing you do to figures before painting? That sounds like a great easy method. Please let me know if that's all you do.

      @@caritup That's it.
Right now, I'm using something called Minwax Wood Finish. It's just something I picked up in the local hardware store.
Some stains may go on thicker so you may want to experiment. Also, I use this for Airfix level figures. They don't have a high level of detail to begin with.

Hi Steve. In this video, what type of Army figure are you using? I have the cheap ones that come like 100 to a bag, and I can find a primer or undercoat that will dry and adhere itself to that type of plastic. If you can help me, please lmk. Thanks

Late reply i know, but they look like ESCI/Italeri Waterloo 1/72nd British/Highlander Line Inf, going off of memory of figures i had in the mid/late 80's.

Hey there, I'm wondering if there are any napoleonic 1/72 scale models that will receive spray as an undercoat. I have been attempting the airfix ones for a while now.
Any help would be much appreciated, as I'm sure you have a large fountain of knowledge working with different sets
    Thanks Conrad

hi there. i tested your recipe of the pva glue/acrylic paint/water. it covers the 1/72 italeri figures nicely! i left to dry overnight and painted next day. the paint behaved oddly as if it was soaked into the undercoat. never mind. i given 3 coats and colors were great. then all the paint along with the undercoat peeled off. completely. did not adhere to the plastic at all.
i previously had very good results undercoating with acrylic paint:water 1:3 and will stick to that.
i wonder how your figures look now? ;-)

I give my minis a coat of ESP before painting the undercoat/base coat. Makes paint stick to anything! The best ones are 'ESP' by Penetrol or Owatrol, and comes in brush on and spray on. You apply it, wait 5 minutes then wipe it off. Wait 90 minutes then paint 👍 See here: th-cam.com/video/rrcGY8LUh2Y/w-d-xo.html
