How I put my 1/72nd plastic figures on a stable base XXXXXXXXXXXXXX Happy New Year to you guys.....sorry I have been out of touch. I use a wood stain for my base coat. It's thin enough to leave the details. I don't bother brushing it on. I simple dip the figure in and set it on a sheet of foil that's been crumpled and re-flattened. It takes a day or so to dry thoroughly, but anticipation is part of the fun.
Is that the only thing you do to figures before painting? That sounds like a great easy method. Please let me know if that's all you do.
@@caritup That's it. Right now, I'm using something called Minwax Wood Finish. It's just something I picked up in the local hardware store. Some stains may go on thicker so you may want to experiment. Also, I use this for Airfix level figures. They don't have a high level of detail to begin with.
@@timbuktu8069 thank you!
@@caritup Let me know how it works for you.
lol Here I am looking at a vid on how to base 1/72 figures while I cut off their bases in order to make'm more realistic. I know of some brands that used to deliver seperate bases, but most of them come based anyway, right ?
In Canada, 2023, the Canadian .01 cent piece is no longer legal tender. Not accepted anywhere. I have hundreds of them & I’m using them as 1:72 bases for individual figures. I also have sheets of thin styrofoam & a hot wire cutter. I’ve a large nail with 1 penny crazy glued to the nail head. I press the nailed penny into a piece of styrofoam cut to hold x2 figures front & x2 figures back for little squares of 4 figures each. Works well enough. Fun painting up the base to reflect ground.
What Glue are u using
esci is takenover by italeri
Please do more videos
I prefer to apply undercoats using an aerosol. So successful this that I tried to apply varnish to finished models in the same way. Alas I confused the can with a can of white and had oversprayed my own painting before mistake realised
I use a wide array of 1:72 figures from a variety of manufacturers; any chance you could post a list of which figures to use the PVA mixture on and which to simply under coat with primer? Thanks!
Could you spray a Clear Matt Coat on them
Could you use Modge Podge to seal them
What Brand of Primer is that
Could I pre mix and store it clear Plastic Jar
What Brand of Paint and brushes you use
Happened to me as well with ceasar models. Primed them and they are sticky forever :D Now I am very careful and do a test primer for that plastic. I am wondering how long will it take till I see the reaction and it becomes sticky? 24h is enough I hope?
There's a spray on acrylic primer but can't seem to find a spray on undercoat for plastic
Buy washers from the pound shop
Looking for new hobby since I am retired. This looks interesting!
I've been painting 54mm and larger figures for years , have stopped now ,health reason . Get a few figures and try it's relaxing and fun to finish and display your work . Good luck .
Thank you for this tutorial. I am going to use 1/2" washer bases for my 1/72 scale soldiers and wanted to know how you mount teams. For example I have Mortar, Bazooka, Machine Gun teams with 2 to 4 miniatures. Do you glue multiple washers together or use a different base?
Just found your great channel. Where are you man !
I use Penny's it's cheapest way to base 1/72 and 2p coins for 28mm
I would but it is illegal
Hey your the reason for Covid cpin shortages 😁...just kidding lol they do make decent bases. I like metal washers cause I can use sheet magnets for storagethe n transport/organization.
@@TANKs-bs3ip I'm sure your fun at parties lol
hi there. i tested your recipe of the pva glue/acrylic paint/water. it covers the 1/72 italeri figures nicely! i left to dry overnight and painted next day. the paint behaved oddly as if it was soaked into the undercoat. never mind. i given 3 coats and colors were great. then all the paint along with the undercoat peeled off. completely. did not adhere to the plastic at all. i previously had very good results undercoating with acrylic paint:water 1:3 and will stick to that. i wonder how your figures look now? ;-)
I give my minis a coat of ESP before painting the undercoat/base coat. Makes paint stick to anything! The best ones are 'ESP' by Penetrol or Owatrol, and comes in brush on and spray on. You apply it, wait 5 minutes then wipe it off. Wait 90 minutes then paint 👍 See here: th-cam.com/video/rrcGY8LUh2Y/w-d-xo.html
Hi Steve. In this video, what type of Army figure are you using? I have the cheap ones that come like 100 to a bag, and I can find a primer or undercoat that will dry and adhere itself to that type of plastic. If you can help me, please lmk. Thanks
Late reply i know, but they look like ESCI/Italeri Waterloo 1/72nd British/Highlander Line Inf, going off of memory of figures i had in the mid/late 80's.
Non si capisce niente
Getting back into wargamming after a while and came across your channel. 185 subs after 2 vids, you know that people found them useful. I hope you will return and do more soon. Subbed. Al

..HEY TWO YEARS LATER.......LOTS OF PEOPLE LOOKING .....SO CAN YOU DO MORE ON PAINTING TIPS N GLUE ECT.... HOPE SO.....AND Hope you are well .....thanks again John Wayne e.
what size of washer do you use for 28mm?
I use 16mm outer diameter. 1.2mm thick. The plastic figures figure tips only after 45°. Try different sizes, to find what works for you.
This guy uses 20 mm diameter washers, he did an army for me a while ago, nice job. He is a very busy bloke at the mo.
great idea on washers.
Yeah I'd rather just dunk everything which has colour in grey paint
Washers? Why not use penny coins - no hole, and they cost literally a penny each, much cheaper even than washers. (Could be slightly illegal though).
It is mate, don't deface the crown. I like the washer idea, have been using them since this video came out.
Hey there, I'm wondering if there are any napoleonic 1/72 scale models that will receive spray as an undercoat. I have been attempting the airfix ones for a while now. Any help would be much appreciated, as I'm sure you have a large fountain of knowledge working with different sets Thanks Conrad
I meant to add that I use this technique for 1/72 Hat, Italeri, Imex and Zveda figures.
i have used a number of types of undercoating techniques including the PVA/White Primer technique.. Recently, for simplicity I started a new technique which seems to work. After washing and cleaning, I paint on Vallejo Matt Varnish #520, after that dries the figures are no longer 'shiny', then after completely dry, I paint on Vallejo Primer (either black, white or gray depending on the base uniform color), after that dries, I paint on one more coat of the Primer, being careful NOT to use to much Primer to obliterate the detail.. I wait at least 12 hour, some suggest 24 hours, to let the Primer dry. Then they are are ready to paint. So far, no chipping or flaking. Let me know if you or anyone has an opinion on this technique. Thank you.
Hey buddy how's it going hope u are well n painting. ..You bud..John.
damage is no Other tutorial
Hi all, have had a break due to work commitments and an operation on my right arm. I will be back soon hopefully with some more tutorials. Thank you for your positive comments.
Painted Soldiers I hope so these are great videos.
hi do you have any continuing videos thanks
You can glue a small piece of thin plastic card onto the washer to close the hole.
I tried the washers and they worked really well! It helps me build the miniature army I always wanted. :) I've got a question though. How do you base cavalry? I don't find it ecstatically pleasing to glue two washers together.
Came across your site and it brought back memories of painting those Airfix 1/72 figures. Frustrating that the paint jumped off I went onto 54mm figs. of sryrene plastic or lead castings. Also became interested in FLATS, mostly 30mm. One tip I would like to pass on regarding polythene plastic figures to help paint stick is to 'swish' them around in small container of sand, this acts as a fine abrasive, then wash in a strong detergent, let dry then undercoat or basecoat as desired. This won't stop paint from coming off if the figure is flexed but will defeat that 'teflon' feeling. Cheers Eh!
+Gordon Enquist Hi Gordon, thank you for the tip.
How many millimetres high are the figures you buy?
+Tom Plant Hi Tom, the figures are 26 mm approx.
Very Good Thank You ....Cherrio.
Well done thank you very much i like it...best way i have seen i really dont want to put a lot of figures on one card board ect... this will work for my Diarama of waterloo now off i go looking for the washers ... slots....or maybe a wsher that has a very small hole ..any way you have a great idea.... Cheers..
