    This may seem elementary but it might interest some of you to know how the mechanics of a manual seat adjustment work. I had the seats out of my Subaru out while I was cleaning them and thought I would make a video on the operation of the seat track and this is the result. I hope you find the information useful and entertaining.

    I like that as Eric is messing with his car he realizes he has a moment to teach even something that could seem so mundane in the normal circumstance. Eric is that teacher at school that made it all worth it.

    Thanks for this dude! Our seat got stuck and we thought it was a huge issue and instead the wire underneath just snapped! We got picture frame hanging wire to replace it and it works again thanks to this video, and we didn't even have to take our seat off the floor!

    Was involved with the roll-forming fabrication of hundreds of thousands (if not literally millions) of upper and lower seat track channels over the course of my time spent in an automobile hardware manufacturing plant. Later editions of the seat tracks (upper & lower channels) were pre-notched prior to the roll forming process. Once these pre-notched tracks were die-cut-to-length they were sent to a phosphate coating tank then directly to the seat adjuster assembly process line. Conservatively, my experience in the manufacture of automotive components comprises at least twenty-five years.
    Once, we sought to estimate the number of raw channels attributed to one design which was finalized in the mid-1960s and saw service in vehicles through 1997. We came up with a number in the tens of millions (accounting for bench and bucket seating). This was only for the manual versions and there were, of course, many hundreds of thousands of electric seat adjuster assemblies fabbed as well. The raw material came in at the receiving bay and through the oversight of engineers, toolmakers, managers, troubleshooters and watchful production techs the finished product was shipped to dozens of vehicle assembly plants across the country. It was really something to witness when all of the processes were working in harmony to get product to their appointed locations on time.

    I've watched a share of your videos and many other how to videos. Sometimes the videos are not so much about the content but about the presenter. I'm very pleased to see that you have tightened up your presentations to be more content driven. Your intro is much shorter (like). Thanks for your service. Keep up the good work.

    In many cases you can remove the seat from the track and switch them,a lot of times it isn't the seat that actually adjusts but the mechanism that it sets on,but yes,there are any number of reasons why it wouldn't work,controls mounted in seat,side airbags,seatbelt recoiling into seat,etc.

    Hey, Eric. I have a VW Jetta 2000. And the cable that goes from the handle broke off somewhere inside the mechanism. And i was wondering if you are aware of any ways i can still move the seat, cause it broke off when i pushed the seat all the way forward fixing something in the backseats. And because the seat is all the way forward, i cant even enter the car.
    Thanks

    A pen can also get into the rails (in some cars) and it will block the release mechanism. seat won't move anymore. happened to me in my mazda5. Also easier to remove the entire seat and troublshoot/inspect from outside the car.

  • @CarverGeeker

    So...weird question for you, Eric. The seat in my '91 Audi 80 will only lock into a new seating position if there is nobody sitting in it. Using the lever to loosen the brackets so they can move works regardless of whether someone is sitting in it or not, as does sliding the seat back and forth. But it only locks into position if there's no weight in the seat. It doesn't seem to me like the wire could cause this; can you think of what COULD be causing this strange issue?

  • @JoeBob79569
    @JoeBob79569 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Both of my front seats are really hard to move, but it's not this mechanism that's the problem. I took both seats out today and gave the sliders a good cleaning, and greasing, but it's still quite hard to move them. The seats are quite heavy with lots of motors and crap in them so that's probably half the problem, but it just seems to be really hard to get them moving initially.
    Certainly a lot different to my old car where they slide absolutely freely. It'd be interesting to know if there're little wheels inside them or if it's just metal on metal sliders..

    This was a good video, I just needed a little more info. I'm trying to take the seats out of my car. The seat doesn't move forward enough for me to get to the back bolts. It slides on the track fine, but it stops at a certain point and I just need one more inch to get the clearance. So annoying.

    I just went to the junkyard and got a newer one the one on my car that's on there now the metal broke.. Should I before I put the newer one in ... bulk up and reinforce with some type of bracket before I put it in because I have a feeling it's going to break again the way it's designed.. The seat adjuster that raises the seat the right side of the seat is a couple millimeters thick steel And the one I got from the junkyard already it looks like it's somewhat bending straighten it out and maybe put a thicker piece of metal stack it and then have somebody weld it for me.. Because it's a lot of work to strip the seat down ,I don't wanna have to do it again and since it's outside of the car right now I could give it to a welding shop just the adjuster... I wonder if I can make my own type of bracket with the clamps I don't have a welder if I did I would do it myself... More then likely the main reason it broke is because I've been sleeping in my car for the past few years so of course its Under alot more stress than it would normally from me moving around while I'm sleeping. Me I don't even need to raise my seat and lower my seat I should just welded it permanently in place.. And the one that's on there right now I could get that repaired and have that as a spare for whenever I sell the car.. Or just toss it or sell it after it's repaired they go for quite a bit money used unless you just go to the junkyard yourself it's not worth it only cost me 35 bucks but if I was to go buy one from lets say evay, They are asking $150-$200 for the same stupid thing...

    Eric, you wouldn't have any insight on manual Honda seat tracks that produce a small clunk when lateral force is applied to it (taking corners). Had a 90 Integra, 92 Accord and my 2003 Accord all do this. It's livable just annoying. Thanks again.

  • @seasonedtoker
    @seasonedtoker 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    somewhat true, but how would use your tilt mechanism then? if you have an old car with lots of space in the middle that's no biggie, but many cars have fully adjustable driver's seat and a co-driver seat that only reclines and goes back and forth. also the controls would be on the wrong side and if your centre floor panel is wide, they render useless

    Sometimes the bolt pattern is the same for the left and right seat.You may have several hundred thousand miles on the driver's seat but chances are that the passenger seat is basically new internally.Sometimes you can swithch the seats and give yourself a rectal upgrade.

  • @brakedd

    it's for the airbag system...there's probably a bladder inside the seat somewhere that pressurizes when someone sits down, the computer needs to know if there's someone in the seat in order to know to deploy the airbag.

  • @seasonedtoker
    @seasonedtoker 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    the rails could be damaged and when a person sits in the seat rails become misaligned according to the toothed bracket so it doesn't go through. that is a very common problem with newer renault clios, altought that's just a design flaw with these cars. I'd suggest take it out and inspect it good. rails usually break and you either replace it or weld it back together.
