The Kelly Affair - UK

The controversial death of weapons expert Dr David Kelly threatened to undermine the integrity of the British Government.
Long faced and withdrawn, the widow of former weapons expert David Kelly makes her way to give evidence to the Hutton Inquiry. Dr Kelly was apparently driven to suicide after being named as a source in media reports claiming the Government exaggerated the case for war with Iraq. The excessive media and parliamentary pressure that followed led him to take his own life. The Government now stands accused of having driven Kelly to suicide in an attempt to protect its public image -- the worst case of political 'spin' gone mad. A full inquiry into the Government's treatment of Dr Kelly, chaired by Lord Hutton, threatens the reputation of everyone up to Tony Blair himself. Blair's trusted aid Alastair Campbell has already resigned, despite denying he misled Britain over the reasons for going to war. However, having come to power promising to be "whiter than white," Blair's government may find it difficult to redeem its once spotless reputation.

This is one of those incidents I keep coming back to.
I saw it play out on the news at the time and the sheer injustice done to Dr Kelly and his family still gives me The Rage.
Every so often somebody writes an article on it or I see a vid like this one and I go searching to see if anything new has come up, but I'm not sure we'll be allowed to see what happened in my lifetime.
You haven't been forgotten Dr Kelly, hopefully some light will be shone on those dark actors you saw coming for you and they'll be held accountable for what they did.

Have you read an Inconvenient Death by Miles Goslett?? I've just finished it and it really highlights the injustices and failings of the Hutton inquiry. Would highly recommend it, some revelations in the book literally sent shivers down my spine.

@@maxytwist I don't know if you realised but it's 20 years ago today that he died, can't believe that much time has passed! I have read the book, yes, the dark actors he saw in the shadows make your blood run cold.
If I remember correctly, Dr Kelly had done some work on some kind of ethno/ethnic bio weapon, which is worth going down the rabbit hole to look into. If they were looking into developing that 30 odd years ago, imagine what they can actually do now

As a scientist who would have known more about human anatomy than most, DrKelly was particularly unlikely to have targeted the ulnar artery. Buried deep in the wrist, it can only be accessed through the extremely painful process of cutting through nerves and tendons

@@asfadfsaafafs8528 I think they're talking about the Greater Manchester Chief Constable Michael Todd, who was found at the bottom of a cliff in 2008 and did indeed start an investigation into whether the CIA was transporting people against their will to countries whose authorities weren't averse to using torture. I think there was a claim that there were UK planes used?

"Sexing up" in this instance pertains to the introduction of false evidence/misleading information to assist in bolstering support for the upcoming 2003 Iraq war. In other words, implying Iraq was in possession of a specific type intercontinental capable weapon system Iraq actually never possessed nor had any knowledge about in the first place.

Some peple say senior figures in Blair's administration alledgedly have blood on their hands. They say with Kelly alledgedly out the way, war in Iraq could proceed. They say he allegedly knew too much and was seen as a hinderance to US and UK plans for the Iraqi invasion. Whatever happened, we will never really know. But to think such a gentle person he might have been murdered for political reasons is simple terrible. Rest in peace David.

How does the media honestly believe this was a suicide? Those people in the pub are the perfect example of the issues of party politics. It's like a team sport mentality where instead of voting for good policy or a good person it doesn't matter what they say or do they'll vote for that party regardless. It's dangerous and reckless and has disillusioned people. People of those parties can do terrible things and not get the criticism from as many people as they should because they refuse to admit wrong. I feel all people should look at politicians from the lens of independents and make the choice for the matters most pertinent at that moment. It's almost like cult mentality when people become so locked in one way or the other. I would imagine it's easier than ever for politicians of this era, regardless of the vast amount of information people have to see the voting and track record of individuals they'll still choose to vote for party rather than principles.
