When I first played this game, I actually kind of enjoyed it. I didn't think it was that bad, but the more I replay it, the more repetitive and boring it is. Everything you pointed out is right. It has gimmicks that are straight up horrible and it felt like the game was devolved from the first one. I don't see myself coming back to it and I’d rather play Spider-Man 3. Although that game isn't perfect, at least it’s more enjoyable than TASM2. At the end the day, we have Marvel’s Spider-Man on PS4 and that game is the best.
@@BrandontheAwesome no it’s overrated. I didn’t get the new vibes from it like I did edge of time or shattered dimensions. That game was fantastic- shattered dimensions

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 game is a complete trainwreck, just like the movie. It brings my blood to a god-damn boil. I'm glad you ripped this game apart. Great review, man. 😎✌️
@@P1SM P1SM I knew this game was going to suck. If I didn't like the first game, I knew the second one would be worse. Insomniac did what Activision and Beenox failed to do, making the best Spider-Man game of all time. Marvel's Spider-Man for PS4 is one the best games I've played and it made me forgot about those God-awful Amazing Spider-Man movie licensed games.
@@P1SM unfortunately what happened mostly boils down to Activision giving Beenox the budget of an Indie game to make a AAA open world game and Beenox still trying to make that AAA game on said indie budget. They didn't compromise on their design decisions but didn't have the money or time to make them good so the execution sucks. Still, I don't think this game is REALLY as bad as it is made out to be, I had a lot of fun with it when I was younger and it mostly played like a competently put together action romp even if it wasn't super challenging or coherent The game gets better when you mod out the hero menace system and ignore the city events, lol
I keep getting the temptation to play this game on my Xbox 360, saying it’s not as bad as people say it is. But then I get reminded of that Hero and Menace meter. And from how you’re describing it, it sounds like torture. I can just imagine myself getting so angry and frustrated with that mechanic, that I would take the game out of my 360, and break the disc in half in my bare hands. I would rather play Sonic 06 again than play what sounds like a painful game. I can at least get some fun out of that game.
amazing review! reminded me exactly why i hated the game so much back when i didn't even know how to critique this medium. and holy hell watching you talk about that hero/menace morality system brought back some major ptsd xD
Not being able to pre-empt enemy attacks and having to wait until the counter sounds super frustrating. It's similar to how in Insomniac's game you're often required to do an official Dodge for gunfire and can't just move quickly out of the way through some other method. The crime/morality system is hilarious to me. I get why they did it that way but there's just always going to be a fundamental disconnect between the comics and videogames when it comes to this whole idea of Spider-Man needing to stop crimes he comes across. Sure, his feelings of guilt and responsibility mean he has to stop those crimes even when it's inconvenient to him but that's not something that plagues him every five minutes! Videogames have to compress time and make them activities more abstract and arcade-y, sure, but the frequency of crimes is absurd.
SMPS4 did that perfectly, imho. You don't HAVE to do every crime that comes across, but if you ignore enough of them, you get JJ on his podcast grilling you for ignoring crimes as a subtle way to say, "get on it" THIS makes you feel like the game hates you for trying to play it.
Spider-Man PS4 is the true amazing spider-man game. If only Beenox took there time, and not rush it, it would've been better, possibly. Or not but it would be something. But honestly it's a fun game for me to play when I'm bored. I like the combat enough and the swinging, and the animations for his takedowns.
17:41 yeah but trust me, if you watch, webs are attached to buildings. I’m playing it now! Try to rotate the camera and watch more times (the one in the video doesn’t happen often, it’s a bug)
Believe it or not, this game actually made the combat WORSE in comparison to the first game. In ASM1, Spider-Man's attack animations changed once you reached a high enough combo. He hit faster, harder, and once fully upgraded, you could achieve this after reaching a combo of six hits, and every attack and counterattack would stun the opponent, leaving them open for a signature move/takedown, which often involved a unique animation using Spider-man's webbing. It made the simple combat look interesting, as almost every other attack would involve a flurry of punches and kicks and using webbing to launch enemies to the ceiling or pin them to the ground. It looked like how Spider-Man would fight. In this game, you rarely even perform signature moves, and it's just stiff attack after stiff attack. Sure, they introduced critical strikes, but they butchered everything that made the combat somewhat entertaining in the first game. Zero steps forward, seven steps back.
I saw a full playthrough of this on TH-cam. The graphics are horrible, and the Hero and Menace system makes it downright tedious. However, the story doesn't seem that bad to me. True, the looking for Uncle Ben's killer thing that is presented as an important thing and then ends a few minutes into the game is really stupid, but otherwise the story for the basic concept was there for an ensemble project. It's not a game I would play because of the Hero and Menace system, but I've seen far worse games on TH-cam. Also, fun fuct: There ACTUALLY is a Spider-Man video game with the RPG style choice selection system that you mentioned: the PSP version of Spider-Man: Web of Shadows. In that version of the game, while Spider-Man talks to the various characters (both NPCs and bosses) he has specific dialogue options defined as Red choices and Black choices. Depending on which dialogue you choose, you will gain or lose reputation points, and those choices have the same moral impact on Spidey's reputation, regardless of whether he's wearing the red costume or the black one. I know that because I have that version of the game.
Spider-Man apparently "being on crack" was horrendously hilarious, didn’t notice it playing the first time but after repeated gameplay it became more noticeable and i was like how did no one fix this. Also i hate the morality system even if it’s a nuisance at best.
I thought for sure you posted an older review of this game, one that starts with you opening the box of Web of Shadows to get this entry, and the end result was a simple "What is this bullshit?"
I loved this game but there wasn’t enough there to really love. It was just so short. And spidey is too muscular in the game and he looks like plastic. He just doesn’t look right.
I might just have a f***ed up mind, but I actually really like this game. Sure the graphics may look worse than the first game, but that doesn't faze me in the slightest as the gameplay is fun
My older brother told me about how bad this game would be. Once I played this game it was crap this game was so bad it became the final Spider Man game made by Activision and they never got to publish a Marvel video game ever again it was the worst spider man game I ever played and it is worse than the movie it was based on
It doesn't really matter, because one of the story missions forces the menace meter on you anyway. Furthermore, deviating the time to do all those crimes is useless because of how rapidly the meter depletes and it STILL makes the game a chore to play through in the open world.
I had a cyst on my vocal chord flap that was (thankfully not cancerous) removed. During the recording of a lot of these videos, I thought I was just sick or coming off of my shoulder surgery and recovering from that. Didn't really realize how bad it was until about a month after this video had dropped. If you watch anything current of mine you can tell how much better my voice sounds post throat surgery. No clue what could've caused it, but scary times.
What makes this game worse is that it came 10 years after spiderman 2, which was considered to be the best spiderman game at the time.
