Actually what are you looking for in Langkawi? You keep on saying you don't like it because it looks rundown, but other towns you've stayed in before looks quite rundown too. I think the fact that you are low on cash and couldn't enjoy much things, like maybe massage or any activities makes you feel cranky, and you are cranky in this video than usual. You should elaborate more on what you are looking for instead of saying rundown, this way maybe if locals or authorities watch your videos, they can improve things.

You can’t really enjoy if you’re attached to a “tight budget.”
There are many places you can go in Langkawi but you have to rent a motorbike to move around.
The Underwater World is not a shopping mall……it’s a HUGE aquarium with 200+ marine & freshwater species, a 3D theater & an UNDERWATER TUNNEL.

You can buy a motor bike phone holder to take with you for the nav apps. The other thing you can do is wear ear buds and listen to the voice prompts. I like to do both, because sometimes you need to pay attention to the road instead looking at the map on your phone.

Langkawi, overall, is not represented by just one place and thus it's not just Cenang Beach (the 'C' is pronounced as the 'C' in 'chair'...in Malay the letter 'C' is never pronounced as a 'suh' or 'kuh'). You need to go to the different parts of Langkawi and its beaches, and only then establish an informed opinion. When I go to Langkawi, I tend to avoid the crowded touristy places, and go straight for the resorts that are close to the beaches because that's what I would be specifically looking for in Langkawi. If you're looking for a nice small town, I don't think this is the place. Look for the beaches instead, and go to the other areas such as Teluk Datai, Tanjung Rhu, Pantai Tengah, and Pantai Kok. Personally, Tanjung Rhu would be my choice. I don't like Cenang either and I don't go there. Enjoy your stay!

This is true, lot more places to explore other than Cenang beach. need to get right info from the locals. However, the ' yeah there is one' the person answered about nasi kandar asked by Ben, he just meant it ' yes there are', not really mean it as 'one' only in Langkawi😅 They are really kampung people. To be honest when I was on Langkawi this town was my base for travelling around the island. I was there about 10 years ago and found it very cheap to rent a car. So if the motorbike rents are pricy guess renting a car is not an option. That’s a shame, hopefully find some way where you can see more of the island, good luck! Maybe explore the Perhentian Islands, or Redang Island 🏝️ much more tropical and a haven of marine life, of the east coast of Malaysia. Or you could just go to Koh Lipe nearby, then your back in Thailand. Mmm when you finally get to the Philippines prepare to find it underwhelming!

Too bad, Ben, you did not spend long enough the time to explore Langkawi. It's not just Cenang Beach there & in fact, it's the most busy strip with lots of tourists, at it's peak seasons.
Even, personally, I would go to Langkawi as many as 10 times for my holidays.
Travel with Balnur has Langkawi series currently. Check out her vids, there are many places to enjoy.
Again, touristic places are what foreign tourists are visiting, in their limited duration of stay, just in any countries. So, no way you could avoid touristy areas when these are what the country/areas could offer - the main reasons what bring tourists to a particular country & places.

Went to Langkawi last year (a decade since the last time I was there) for part work part holiday. Gotta say, it lost it's charm... But some might argue, it's part of development and growth.
I go to Langkawi for it's quiet peaceful nature, but it has turned into another beach town. One of my favorite places (Underwater World) I remember it was just one building and a lot of nature surrounding it, now it's all shops, restaurants, gift shops, clothes shops. Some like it, some don't. To each it's own I guess.
But for me, I'd rather go to one of the beaches in Thailand.

I had to laugh, 24:30 when I saw the Nasi Bistro, it was a little different back when was there, but it's think the place I got one of the worst cases of food poisoning ever. After we had lunch, we passed by the side of the place I on the way to the beach and I can still see an obese Indian guy with a meat cleaver chopping up a pile of chicken literally on a bloody log just like you would see in India. I had a bad feeling about the place but after a long ride from Penang on the bus we were starving took a chance.
Pankor was better but not a lot to do there but hang out at the resorts. I drove a few times from Penang to Alor Setar ("Aloe Star" as I recall it being pronounced locally) and Hat Yai a few times with relatives who worked for an NGO, and both were mildly interesting, but I more enjoyed the northerly drive from Penang to Rendang more.

Seems like Malaysian beaches are not popular because of the jellyfish lots of small jellyfish.. I was told by people in KL don't bother with going to the beach you will be stung by jellyfish.. de Nang Vietnam people are surfing there but no complaints of jellyfish.. It's almost like it's a breeding area because they are small jellyfish

Shame you didn’t like Cenang. Cenang is actually my favourite night beach. It’s nice to walk there at night. There are also some decent beach bars.
That Mexican restaurant is actually pretty good and the nasi kandar restaurant is actually decent. I’ve eaten there a few times. Don’t know why it got bad reviews. There is good food in Cenang if you know where to look.

Stop booking via Agoda- their recommendations too often lead to disappointments. You really don't need advance bookings in Malaysia- just explore once you get to a place and talk to a local or a few, asking them for recommendations- but make your own mind. Go to the village areas, around Makam Mahsuri... find a local coffee shop (a genuine local type eg local fish/chicken rice- NOT the touristy kind) and talk to its owners, ask for help... you can sometimes hitch an unforgettable [out of this world] boat ride around the island if you meet the right ppl, by the right jetty. You can even stay on a boat, over-nights- leave your options open.
DON'T underestimate underwater world- intriguing series of underwater tunnels around Langkawi. There should be YMCA type accommodation- safe and clean, about RM20-30 a night...?
I hope you find all the help and magic you need while you're there- so sorry for disappointments thus far.

Tourist tax is not only imposed on foreign tourists. Local residents are no exception. I always stay in hotels all over Malaysia and there is no tourist tax exception for the citizen.

It's strange that it's a flat 10 RM instead of a percentage. So if the place is 50RM per night the tax is the same as if the room is 1000RM per night. Weird, but I don't mind paying it once, if they make me pay it online and in person though I'm not happy haha

I work in a hotel. That is not true. Tourism tax is for foreigners per room per night. Unless in penang, need to pay rm 2 extra. Some islands require environment fees eg perhentian islands. Locals do not need tourism tax.

I work as artist manager before And have stayed all over Malaysia including Sabah and Sarawak. I have also booked rooms in Jakarta, Singapore and Brunei. In addition to RM10 per day, in Malacca and Penang there is an additional inheritance tax of RM2. In CAMERON, the tax is calculated based on the head compared to the number of rooms in other states. Latest
I went on vacation with three family members for 4 days. The price of a family room is RM444.54. Along with tax I have to pay RM545.78. That is not yet the RM100 deposit in some hotels and will be returned after check-out.
