    I've just been looking at Fluval Stratum. Here in Indonesia it is priced at about $300 per 17.6 pound bag. Checked out the description and it looks like I can use a locally available alternative which is also sourced from the foothills of a volcano. It is called "pasir Malang", which translates to "Malang sand" and can be had in red or black, coarse or fine for about $1.30 per 5 kg bag. If you are based in Indonesia it would appear to be a cost effective alternative.
    The undergravel filter panels shown are also available locally with both plain panels and panels with a hole set up for a riser tube. They cost about $0.70 cents each in black or white while the risers are sold for about $1.40 each. Unfortunately the risers are fairly large but I feel that with the air supply adjusted properly they could be usable.

    I'm curious how you will inject the negatively charged ions which I think are necessary for the anoxic filtration process? Also, pond stores sell calcium montmorillonite clay powder used to feed goldfish to enhance their color as well as polish the water. This same clay is added to Dainichi cichlid pellets to enhance color and digestion. Would adding this clay powder to the water per the directions provide the negative ions in the substrate filter so that anoxic filtration could be carried out on the plenum without using kitty litter? Thanks!

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think he would need a lot more of the clay than what you're willing to spend and it could mess up your aquarium or pond.

    Cool update, will just get better as the series goes on, very interesting one. Fun to see you get into the scaped tank market a little more, trying the new plant light and soil, plus CO2 is in the works!
    One of my tanks has the 3.0 and stratum. I’ve been happy enough with it over the past year. I would suggest using your ground cover method on top of and around the UGF. This will keep it from shifting underneath it around the gap at the edge as it shifts around easily in the beginning. Also, it has done a pretty decent job retaining its granules up to this point. Some powdered and shifts down through the substrate, although, it’s been more than adequate and better than some others, in that sense. Most are similar to original size, yet the cover will also help any that does break down now slip through the UGF too. Not my favorite soil, but still very decent.
    I think lighting can be as intense as you want or plant species can handle so long as you balance everything else to the same level. I think strong light intensity is hardly ever people’s issue, it just presents their already under lying issue more rapidly, so turning it down makes them think it’s helped. Interested to hear updates on your experience about this. If it seems to have no negative affect, next I really want to see what messing with the spectrum does for you. It would be nice to know if the low 5% blues is necessary or if an increase triggers anything.

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is good to hear, always open to good info on the Fluval Stratum. In fresh water aquariums PAR is not that important as LUX and K values. Very strong light with very little Blue spectrum and cutting back on the Red's too will make a big difference in plant growth and inhibits Algae growth.

    Looking forward to see your 90g tank setup Dr. Novak. I agree 100% on the costs of Chemipure.
    I searched for laterite on Amazon and you are right, it's now available in clay form...but it wasn't earlier when everyone was trying to find it to make the BCB baskets. Your plenum is really the best way to create anoxic conditions without the use of a sump...under gravel filtration is excellent. Fill it up with a porous substrate with a layer of laterite and your in business. It should be noted to those watching that you don't want to use an air pump to push oxygen through the substrate. That will prevent the substrate from becoming anoxic.

    Fluval Stratum was $25 for an 8 pound bag the last time I bought it. I have 2 of the Fluval Plant lights. I think they are great and reasonable for the quality. I'm setting up a 75gal tank using an undergravel filter as a slow moving plenum as you suggested. I have a deep substrate with saf-t-sorb over the filter plates. Then I have a thin layer of fluorite red and then a thin layer of Fluval Stratum and a thick layer of ecocomplete. I plan to put some more Fluval Stratum where needed for the plants.
    My tank is cycled now. I haven't done any water changes. My nitrate is 5ppm this morning. I expected it to be 80ppm or more. I don't what caused this. It's been 3 weeks since I set it up. Do you think the anoxic bacteria is established already or maybe it's the saf-t-sorb? Anyway, I'm happy

    How can you end up with anoxic conditions in the substrate when using a plenum or UGF? Oxygenated water is constantly flowing through the substrate and back out the lift tube(s). You would need a dead zone with no water flow which then would be deplete of oxygen.

    • @muhammadbadat7042
      @muhammadbadat7042 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      From what I understand .The key is a slow flow rate. When the flow is slow the oxygen gets used up before it reaches the bottom part of the substrate.
      The plenum is just used to move water slowly through the substrate to allow lower oxygenated water in the plenum

    Going to set up a new 100gal.+ tank................want to use your slow moving plenum, will be using sand for substrate cap. Do you think it is possible to use Father Fish's mud mixture over top of the gravel filter then a sand cap ? Haven't thought ofo the lift tube size. Link to the undergravel filter on amazon please. hi, can you make an anoxic filter using a hang on the back? There are some hang on the backs that allow you to adjust the flow, i was thinking if you just filled one with media (since water is usually clean near the water column) and reduced the flow it would make for an easy and cheap version of the anoxic filter.

    So my BSB has been in the sump for 25 days now, something started happening around day 10 that I’m curious about. All of my clear hoses and I’m guessing the white PVC as well have cleared themselves of the brown build up they had. The clear hoses seem to have taken on a white appearance. The process was a little annoying for about a week as any adjustment to flow rate blurped out debris. That aside would this be related to the BCB basket?

    • @anoxicfiltrationplenums
      @anoxicfiltrationplenums  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The loss of algae would be because of the BCB and white on the hoses would be bacteria growing on them. My hoses do the same thing.In fact I have a video one just that subject too.

    Rather than top 'Screen', use 1/2 x 39x39 30PPI Poret 25 USD. (Swisstropicals) -- ((UG Plates as above 22 USD per 10 (44 USD per 20) Currently at amazon.)) - OR - 24 x 24 x1/4 black Egg Crate 15.99 BRS. -- 5/8 Polydrip - NDS on Amazon (cut at lengths of 1-1/4 for Standoff feet) - [Currently plenty on hand here]. Soften one end with heat gun. Push Softened 'Round Peg' into slightly tapered 1/2 square hole until seated flush with hard surface. Let cool. Use single hole 'Paper Hole Punch' to make 4 holes at 90 degree spacing at the bottom of each stand off foot, for circulation through. (Oh, first push softened end of the polydrip feet into chimex/pyrex glass funnel to slightly taper them before inserting into Egg Crate.) -- If one side of 'Plenum' is butted against an HMF, no need for uplift tube. -- If you need to 'glue' Poret sheet, edge to edge, use Silicon 1 "all purpose" sealer. ..Both the 'Egg Crate' and the Poret pad will also tend to float just like the 'Plastic Canvas' screens, unless it is weighted down first.

      @@anoxicfiltrationplenums - My reason for the Poret is because I grade the substrate to be small enough to screen through a 7 count Plastic Canvass, but large enough to Not go through a 10 count plastic canvas. Roughly a 3/32 inch. This was my solution to 'Forage Feeders' (Goldfish) repeatedly getting larger grades of substrate either stuck in their mouths or blocking their digestive tracts.

    How are you going to prevent the substrate from entering the plenum from the sides. I agree with Annalee. Fluval stratum is a volcanic soil, not a baked clay. You can pulverize it between fingers easily. It will turn to mud over time. Also, it will drop your ph considerably. I have it in 2 of my tanks. It's great to grow plants but I think you will be disappointed with it as bottom
    layer.

    I have built a BCB into a Ehime 600 canister filter basically setup just like the one you did for the ADA. Once the BCB is fully established to current fish load in the tank how quickly can it adjust to the addition of more fish? Do you treat it just like a normal filter or does it adjust slower? Or faster? Just wondering what your experience with this is. Thanks for your help!

    Hello Dr. Novak. I made the undergravel filter with the oxigen pump 3 days ago . I tested the water right after the installation and was:
    nitrates 5 ppm
    nitrites: 0 ppm
    ammonia: between 0.25 and 0.50
    Today the water is:
    Nitrates 20 ppm
    Nitrites 0 ppm
    Ammonia between 0 and 0.25
    How much time will take to this filter start to work with the nitrates? I will do a partial water change tomorrow. Hello, Dr A word of caution if I may. The Fluval Statum you are planning on using will break down over time into very fine particles, and those particles will make their way through the grid for your plenum. I still have no trouble sourcing the baked clay. It is good to know, too, that the use of baked clay on top of a plenum is not necessary if one includes the use of a BCB elsewhere. I am currently setting up another aquarium with a plenum, and an Oase Biomaster Thermo 600 canister filter with BCB baskets. I will use the Special Kitty cat litter on top of the plenum. The last bag of it I purchased from Amazon was of the old type. Maybe, they switched vendors again, or I got lucky.
