The Monarch of the Glen is a Scottish red deer stag painted by Edward Landseer in 1851. If you look it up, you will see that the original fades into the background heaher, hence no legs!
I thought this was the reason but would love to know why it's very different to the other 5 tins. I would of thought it would be something like a bettle or lizard.
This set fills in the gaps so nicely with the previous sets. The new greens are absolutely gorgeous. If you're looking for the swatching order, I have a great video on my channel where I swatched all 144 together by color families. Great video Jennifer!
A Monarch is a 16+ point stag....(points of his antlers). I love your channel and have learned so much from you!!! Thank you and God bless! Rus from Pennsylvania ❤
Strangely, the stag in this painting ("the Monarch of the Glen") is not a "monarch" which, as you rightly say, needs 16 points to his antlers - it's a "royal" stag which has 12. Who knew?!
Some sets might be on sale. I just got 3 sets on sale. There is now 180 colors. No need to buy all at once. Buy what is on sale and make do. Then while coloring see what you think you need and you could see which other set matches what you need, or use crayola or better is amazon 72 basics to fill in gaps UNTIL more black widow come on sale. Eventually you will want all the colors but you don't need them all at once. No duplicate colors.
Love your reviews...so much research and knowledge goes into these! Thank you so much...I love the Phoenix but will be getting these to share with my grandkids to encourage art. Tried to purchase the Phoenix a couple of times and couldn't get thru the Card purchase, security issues, their end or my bank...gave up.
You say not to buy these first, why not, suppose people want a general grade coloring pencil muted set. That is why I bought them. I also like the art work on the tins, I think it is very creative, which is why many enjoy coloring, to be creative.
hello! i got the scorpion, black widow and the cobra sets today and, answering your question, they still don’t dip the ends in those sets, also my skin tone sets (i got them yesterday) are still 4mm
I actually JUST got my 3 white tin Black Widow pencil sets yesterday. No they were not dipped like the Skin Tones & Monarch. Also I've been browsing for the newest Black Widow pencil sets, with no luck except for the 2 Skin Tone Sets 🤦♀️🤷♀️ Any suggestions on where I can purchase all of the remaining sets?
I watch a video where black widow pencils complete came off the page under water. It made me sad because I was ready to order them but I want to be able to spray them or do mixed media. Do you recommend these for coloring? Any solutions?
Albert's said he chose the Monarch of the Glen, a very famous painting by Sir Edwin Lanseer, used by many brands including whisky manufacturer Glenfiddich, because this set is more nature colours, muted pastels etc. It's a Red Deer stag yes 😊
Thank you for this video. I've ordered the Monarch set, will it cover me for light skin tones? Would it be worth it to purchase the light skin tone set, or are there duplicates colors?
Paraffin and gum arabic not beeswax are primarily used in wax pencils. The wood used is probably the "renewable energy". I am not sure about the other ingredients such as the core and color.
I have just received these pencils, a month after getting the Black Widow set of 24. I am not going to bother with the skin tones, but I'm not sure yet about the Scorpion and Cobra sets, until I can see what the colours are. I am loving using these pencils in my books, but when it came to doing a swatch sheet, I was mystified by their numbering system. The numbers are all over the shop! Meaning confusing. Most pencil sets are numbered in colouring sequence, if you know what I mean, so a group of numbers might be green, another group might be reds and so on. I have ended up doing my swatch sheet in colours, not in numerical order, but I still write the numbers next to the colour name, because sometimes a colouring tutorial will specify the number of a pencil instead of a colour, and I hate wasting time looking through them all!
I was curious re Monarch stag and it came to me that a Monarch of the Glen TV series which depicts a stag in Scotland. Apparently the Monarch stag has antlers with 16 points
Does anyone else feel like their Monarch pencils are scratchier than their Black Widow and Scorpion sets? They are still wonderful pencils, but I was swatching them all together in a big color order chart and to me they don’t feel as smooth as the earlier sets
I really love black widow covers, i hate snakes, but those tins looks great! I love the simple white and black covers, with the simple drawing, they look very cool! I don't think they're masculine, and i love the stag too but i wish that stag had legs, simple black cover, loving it, it looks a bit elegant.
Hi Jennifer, I recently found your channel and have been enjoying the content you put out. I've always passed on the original three black widow sets as I really can't deal with the art on the tins. Thanks to your reviews of these pencils, I'm going to bite the bullet, ignore my phobia and purchase the sets. If you don't already know this, I thought you might like to know that Landseer's stag (the one on the tin) only has a total of 6 points on each antler, making him a 'royal' stag. An 'imperial' stag should have a total of 14 points, wheras a true 'monarch' stag should have a total of 16 points. Take care, Karen 💕
Hello, love your videos and hope you and your husband are keeping safe and healthy. I bought the other sets earlier this year and the three original sets are not dipped with the color. I love these pencils.
Could you give me your honest advice. I own all the sets of Black Widow except the Monarch and to be honest, I barely ever use them. When I started colouring I had to buy all the known pencil brands so I really had all the brands that where available at that time and I discovered that I only bought the pencils because I had to have them. My favourite pencil is the Prismacolor premier and sometimes the FC Polychromos and the Caran D'Ache Luminance, and when I colour something with other pencils I always go back to those brands. Is the Monarch set then really something I should buy? Or are they in no comparison with the earlier mentioned brands.
Honestly....save your money unless you really want to complete the set. The Black Widow Pencils are not better then what you already have and I’m looking forward to going back to my Prismacolor pencils.
I just got my Monarch (Stag) and Cobra last month. Cobra are not dipped. They are fun pencils to use though but now I realize need the complete sets. hahahaha. JUST ordered the other 3
Thank you for showing these. I've been interested in this set. BTW, your art studio makes me drool. You've got it all girl, and very organized. Dear Santa, please send me a studio stocked like this one!
The tin design doesn’t attract me to buy them with spiders, and nasties A comment I saw below said the uk tv show “Monarch Of The Glen” which is a great comment - tv show was set in Scotland 🙂 maybe the Stag is representing Scotland? New to your channel - just subscribed 😊 I’ve never heard of that brand...... they would scare me if I owned them 😆
There used to be a drama in the UK called Monarch of the Glen. About a Scottish mansion and its owners, staff and of course the game keeper who took paid clients to shoot the stags.
My guess is he wanted the pastel set to really stand out. I use the Black Widow sets all the time, but I couldn't tell you which set has which color, but I know know if I want the pastels, to grab the Monarchs.
I think it has to do with this set they we're aiming at. This set was aimed at bringing lighter colors to there sets. Because most of there other sets are dark colors.
These pencils look like a good opportunity for adding those soft, delicate pastels that are so rare in sets. A good substitute for the opaque, chalky looking Holbeins. Far more budget friendly too.
I have a question about these pens. My english is not good enough to understand this whole video. Maybe it's been mentioned but I don't understand. Can I use these pencils for detail drawing for oil pastels?
Great review as always! I'm really looking forward to see what you color with them and any other plans you have! I use these cases (no patterns just black and blue covers) and I usually get the next size up (supposedly holds 220 listed under YOUSHARES but it's the exact same logo) and they have been great.
Also when I think of Monarch I think of royalty first. Right outside our back door we have a milkweed plant that is the favored food/home for monarch butterflies so I understand that might be a common assumption but it may be very American-centric. Not sure how far afield the Monarch butterfly flies
I had contacted the seller at one point after I purchased the cobra set about artist quality. They said they are working on their inclusion of the light fast ratings.
A monarch is also a majesty. A majestic animal. The stag has always held a title as the most majestic animal in the forest. At least in Europe it was that way.
The only black widow pencils I have are the skin color of light tones. .The case is nice I have one case that I have filled and the rest of my pencils are in their tin cases they came in.👍💜
They probably mean monarch like royalty, as in the stag is the prince of the forest. A Bambi reference. And personally, I love the weird case graphics. They make me laugh. Probably because I like creepy crawly critters and write about Nagas.
I know! There are tons of good sets out there, but I was initially attracted to these because the concept stands out, and I would tell the pencils would match my vibe. And they do, and are my go-tos. I have Prismas, Polys, Caran D'Ache, Dick Blick, and I know I'm forgetting some, and the BWs are my preciouses. ;) So for Jennifer to go through the they're creepy and masculine thing every time... Girls, and by girls I mean 52 year old women, can like all the things these sets represent. I'm glad there are pencils with a more goth feel and coloring books to match. I love the tutorials, and would love to personally thank Jennifer, but I use the tips and tutorials to color with the pencils I like the stuff I like.
In the interests of giving feedback on your sponsor video: it is confusing, what are they selling, a picture hook? Do you need special frames, were those metal frames with the black dots part of it? Why is it better than nailing a normal picture hook?
Don't get your hopes up for high lightfastness whenever there's no data available. On the other hand, poor lightfastness doesn't mean they can't be used at all. Colored pencils aren't particularly fragile since the pigment is laid down thick and encased in wax.
And you can lean the Name Monarch on old times he was like a king - and the Picture could lean on the hunting wich was a pleasure for the King. Could be to remember German history of the Monarch(en).
I have a couple of things to say. I recently bought the skin tone pencils but shade away from the others. Speed limit be just a hair do something about those creatures that were unappealing to me so I lost interest to us by the packaging. But when I saw the monarch pencils with the stag on it I see the representation of that buck has been the leader, the head, the alpha male the monarch.

I'm wondering if they skipped a monarch butterfly cause it'll look like prismacolors
I have these and they are wonderful!!just my opinion though.
I think the packaging is great and I love the bugs! And the Monarch :)

I purchased the Cobra box from Amazon in March 2021. They were not dipped.

I also thought butterfly. Would have loved that. It takes energy to do the manufacturing.
But considering all their other pencils are "bug" things, you would think they would continue the theme instead of jumping to deer.
I think some people were creeped out by the bug theme. Still, it's a shame they suddenly changed the theme
I also do not like it as much that they changed the tin in total. Nothing for collectors...three white thin tins...than one big black and gold.
I would have voted for a lizard or something. The "Frilled Lizard" set. LOL

All Monarchs liked hunting stags and deers.
Renewable energy in Europe comes from sun and wind power stations.
