Hey, I have a proposal for you. Since you have so many colour pencils, why don't you arrange an art contest where you can giveaway the colour pencils as prize🤔. I'm saying this because these are not available in our country & I really wanna try them out😭😭😭😭
@@SarahRenaeClark oww that's so nice of you🥰😍. But if you giveaway your second hands, the chances will increase for more people to get these... BTW, what do you do with your second hands?🤔
Sarah, could you please share the full information on the pens I see behind you in your videos. I’m very confused about how you use them prior to the pencils. You’ve taught me so much about my pencils. Thanks!
@Michelle Belle not really how taxes work. A write off is a write off. But it doesn't work exactly like that. It doesn't make them "free". It will just be added into the formula they use as a deduction and an expense. She definitely spends a lot of money out of pocket that she wouldn't recoup if Aus taxes work like the US does.
I'm not willing to pay Holbein prices for something I'm just going to use in a colouring book, so I am perfectly happy with the Pastelowe pencils. And I found a video where they swatched the Holbeins, and numbered mine, and matched the number to the Holbein names.
I got the brutfuner square pencils instead of getting the 500 felissimo pencils. Too much for my taste and a happy alternative for. So yes i understand.
I appreciate the amount of time swatching, editing, and filming you do, Sarah! I’m so happy you shared your opinions about Holbein and referenced my video. Colored pencils are a very personal decision when it comes to what a person loves, but high quality will speak for itself! I loved the charts you made and including several different brands for comparison, and I’m sorry the postman shoved those pencils in your mailbox! I gasped! 🤣
As a pastel gal myself, I find this so satisfying and helpful! Whenever I’m stressed or my anxiety runs over, my boyfriend grabs my pencil container and makes me sort them. Sometimes he’s requesting I do a light to dark sort, rainbow sort and lately he has been requesting pastel rainbow sort 🌈🤩 I don’t know why I tell you this, but it works out for me, if anyone in the comments needed an idea too. Anyways, I’ve loved your content ever since I found your freebie coloring pages and work/practice sheets for gemstones. Later on I bought the color catalog(s) and I use them for absolutely everything! I was SO EXCITED when I found out you were doing TH-cam 🤩 Keep up the good work down under and stay safe in these uncertain times ❤️
That’s. GREAT idea for when anxiety takes over. That’s usually when I color but sometimes I’m so overwhelmed that I can focus well enough to come up with a good color scheme. I bet sorting pencils would be a really great distraction. Thanks for the tip and I hope your anxious days become fewer and farther between. At least we know that others understand what it’s like💜
I am not a professional coloring artist. In my last vacation in Poland I purchased some pencils I forgot at home. So I know the Astra Pencils are ok 😊 I also brought the Pastelowe now and I am impressed. I never had expensive pencils and so I have nothing to compare... but in my opinion the Pastelowe are really good pencils 😍
I actually really love to use a cheaper brand of color pencils along with a set of more expensive pencils. For example, using a very light color from a pack of crayola over top of a prismacolor layer, makes for good blending and still adds a tiny bit more color. Also, I notice sometimes that something about shading over top of prisma with another far cheaper pencil can stop it from getting that wax bloom look, and makes it look more matte
I'm currently totally obsessed with pastel pencils. Now, I know the obsession is due to my recent diagnosis of ADHD. But, it hasn't stopped me loving them! It just explains why lol. Would give my back teeth for the Holbeins but simply can't justify the price.
You do an incredible job of reviewing and helping your subscribers in so many ways Sarah Renae so 🙏🥰. FWIW Colour With Claire has a video where she shows the pastel range from Faber Castell so if people have that set you can see easily the pastel tones you already have. For me I just love my Holbeins. Hope you’re doing okay in our lockdowns in 3 states Sarah Renae and thank goodness for colouring to keep many of us sane in these insane times.😘 Keep going with your great videos👍🌹
Thank you for your honest reviews/opinions. I've been considering purchasing some of these pastel sets and you helped me realize I may already have what I need in my ever growing collection!
I have full sets of polychromos, holbeins, prisma’s, luminance and pastelowe. I love poly and holbeins. The pastelowe is a nice extra. Luminance i find chalky and scratchy and with prisma i find to hard to blend(waxbloom). So i think for everyone just another opinion. I would definitely buy poly and holbeins. The rest not so much. I like the range of lighter colors of holbeins which not seen in other brands. But very pricy indeed. Great video.
Are Holbein pencils more like Prismacolor or Polychromos? I only have Polychromos and I am happy with them, I am thinking of buying the Holbein ones but if they are too soft I am afraid I won't like them
Holbeins are a unique blend of wax and oil. It is a one of a kind pencil. I would say it is between poly and prisma. Not so soft as prisma and not so hard as poly. They blend so beautiful. And the colorrange is also unique. Maybe you can find open stock to try out.
Thanks for this review and comparison of a more affordable pastel alternative. The beautiful color range of the Holbeins were what attracted me to the brand. I bought a few open stock locally to try them out before committing to purchasing a full set and they were just so nice to color and draw with. I have had bilateral carpal tunnel release and get joint pain from all the work I do with my hands. The Holbeins are just the most comfortable for my grip, I don't need to use much pressure to get beautiful color laydown or when blending/burnishing and that is a huge pro for me. I also feel they respond better to Gamsol than Prismas or Polys, but that's just my personal finding. I 100% agree the Holbein's are overpriced at least where I live in the U.S., but I bought my 150 set straight from Japan which cost roughly the same as my 120 set of Polychromos. The U.S. price markup on Holbeins is insane, but they are attainable for much less if one has their heart set on them. Thank you for sharing all your work on YT, it is very appreciated!
Dear Sarah, Thank you, once again, for this great review. I love all of your reviews (in my opinion, among the best on the internet) but I found this one particularly helpful. I own several dozen brands of pencils and this comparison made it easy to see that I have more than enough pastel pencils.
I have been looking at the holbeins for the past year, this is a great review. Thank you as always, I am going to look at what I have and put together from my Prisma colors and Lyra a pastel set and then buy a few open stock holbein. I think the biggest thing for me is to put them all together so I can see my pretty pastels as a set.
Thank you so much for your time and effort. I really appreciate this video and found it extremely helpful. I don't have a big budget, and now I feel like I can put together some pastels to make me happy in my artwork. Thanks again, you are awesome!
Lindsay, the frugal crafter convinced me to make an Aliexpress account for the sole purpose of buying the Brutfuner pastels and I have NEVER once regretted it. I love them and they're irreplaceable in my collection. I may have had some of the shades but not all 50. And looking at the pastel shades inspires me in ways that a few single shades just wouldn't.
Hi! I just wanted to drop a big thank you for putting together this awesome video! I've already got the Prismacolor 150-color set, but I've been feeling like it's lacking some pastel tones. So, while I was on the hunt for info on getting a pastel tone colored pencil set, I stumbled upon your video. Your comparison chart totally saved the day-I realized I don't need to splash out on a new set after all, which is a major money-saver. Hoping you'll keep making more of these fantastic videos in the future👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much for your patience and attention to detail. You clearly put a great deal of time and effort into these comparisons, and I am greatly profiting from your tutelage.
Hey, Sarah! I'd love to see you do a video on your favorite coloring books. Options for different skill levels would be awesome. I would like to fiddle around with more coloring books when I don't feel like being too serious, but they all just seem to be the same theme of paisley, floral, or random quirky fonts.
I LOVE this video and your chart. I was shopping pastel sets just the other day and thinking the same thing. That you spent the time to do all the matches is super! Now I can pull a set of pastels from my Prismas. I have a set of Marcos, too, and that might be a good purpose for them, since I out grew them. Thanks a lot.

After watching several of your videos, I echo all the great comments. But I haven't seen a comment on the actual videos. SO impressed with how you put your videos together. The pacing is unusually good. Your visual examples are dynamic. You capture and hold interest to the end. You really should consider a channel for advising TH-camrs on how to create outstanding content.
Thanks for such a thorough review! I was tempted by the budget pastel sets but knew I had nice pastels in my Prisma set already. I might have to grab some Holbein or Posca though try out.
Thank you for this video. Pastels are lovely. But as someone who has too many colored pencils as it is, what I found most useful is that the larger sets already have these pastel colors that we need.
I'm new to your channel and have only watched a handful of videos so far. I have to say that I have enjoyed everything so far and love the information that you give and all the different things you try! I've learned so much and I really appreciate that! I'm glad I found your channel and look forward to more videos! Thank you! 😁
I love how well research and work you put into your videos I have the Pastelowe, they are very similar in color to the Holbein. I use them on coloring books, I just don’t see the reason for paying for the light fastness. I am also not very inclined to pastel colors, so I’m happy with them. They add different colors that I don’t have in any another set. I added numbers to them as they came arranged in the box, a good enough match to me. I do get good blends with them. I bought them on Amazon Germany and only paid 3 euros for shipping to Mexico! I am not collecting pencils. These are the cheapest set I’ve bought.
Thank you Sarah for another excellent comparison video! While the larger pastel sets look pretty, for me I am very content with my small set of of pastels and using the white prismacolor to lighten the brighter colors.
Thank you Sarah for this useful information on pastel coz l need to get 1 set for my mother using in her colouring books. Much appreciated you have done all the works for us. Have a great weekend & stay safe 👍.
Wonderful video. I had been going through my sets making pastels from what I already own and you beat me to it lol. Awesome to watch too. Holbeins, now that you say it, really do seem a lot like arteza with a few differences but yea, that's a great way to compare because they both have a sticky wax. Thank you so much for sharing, as always!
@@SarahRenaeClark oh for sure she does. I need to find her video! I didn't realize she looked at them. For the longest time I've tried to think of a comparison and that's perfect
Pastels are so pretty. I want a set for convenience but don't really use them often. If Prismacolor came out with a pastel set I'd buy it in a heartbeat.
I am really loving your page here. I love watching you color. I am a color freak. I bought the Ohuhu markers set. Two sets actually. I really love how youve taught me to blend markers and pencils. THanks for making all of these videos. Youre my favorite channel on youtube.
Thanks for another great video! I had just done a similar thing with all my pencil sets to justify NOT buying the Astras, and I already have the Marco pastels, which I quite like. But then, living in NZ and being a cheapskate with other higher priorities, I have mostly Chinese pencils. But I was thinking, don't Jasart also put out a small pastel set? And I have been drooling over the Colleen 120 set lately, which also seems to have alot of interesting colours too. Still more affordable than 12 Holbein pastels, almost the same price lol.
Thank you so much for this perfect review, I appreciate the enormous amount of time and effort and money you put into your videos! This one being especially interesting for me, as I have been considering buying myself the Black Widow sets just for the pastel colors. Unless you get the 120 sets of pencils, I don‘t seem to find as many pastels in the regular sets, same with skin tones. Could you make a similar evaluation on skin tones, as there are also special sets of those on the market? Thank you once more, lots of love! 💜💕💜
Nice review, very well done! I have no love for the Holbein pencils, I even dislike their watercolor paints, to opaque. Yet those are personal preference’s. iLife your solution of just using a white Prismacolor pencil to tint the color into the pastel range! That has been my solution for years when I did not have a certain color, just mix it with multiple pencils! I have even used markers for undercoating or watercolor paint to get the colors within the correct range. You have a lovely channel and I enjoy watching your videos. Thank you.
This has been very helpful. Thank you. Also can't wait for my 2021 planner to come through in the mail. PS. Take care over there. Stay safe and healthy.
thank u so much sarah! i trust your reviews so much! and now if i can't find the holbeins and that u love them more now too...i might try black widow first
Thanks for this comparison. I’ve realized that until I have the money for one of the luxe sets, I’m gonna stay with Polychromos and Prismacolor. But like a lot of other art supply junkies, I have some other brands and sets too. I do love coloring…it is definitely therapeutic, but I don’t do it as much as I used to. I’m focusing now on building my body of work more for fine art so although I incorporate color pencils into that work, I don’t take the time for just plain coloring as much as I used to.
I'm really curious how many pencils from the Tombow Irojiten sets (they have an awesome set of pastel colors) would match up to the Holbein pastels as well. I've downloaded your free colored in chart and I'm going to see if I can match up some of the colors that weren't quite matched up with the Prismacolor and Monarch sets, since those are the only two sets on the list I have :) (btw, I used to post as Cassia Dee, in case you remember me. But I'm Cassia Colors now)
darn, wish i had seen this video before ordering the marcos from ali. oh well. :-) i only have 40 holbein including 12 of the pastel. nice thing is i can add a few at a time via open stock. super video sarah!
I am buying the 12 set end of July 2023 to see if I get on with them I onlt have 120 Polychomos Faber Castell . .Great infor thank you Happy crafting xxxxxxx
Great video…just a little too late for me. Unfortunately I already fell for these pencils and they do take more effort to use. Thanks you for you great video, you never disappoint
Very good, helpful review. I like the idea of choosing pastel colors from my existing sets. And I think you have given me a good excuse to buy some Black Widow pencils!
Tombow Irojiten have a lot of nice pastel colors, but they're hard to find open stock, and the color sets they offer mean you'd have to buy all three of the 30 color sets to get their full selection of pastel pencils. There are two colors that my beloved Polychromos colored pencils don't have that I really wish they carried. One is a lavender, the other is a blue grey.
My Polychromos set was $179, but I have been getting interested in having pastel pencils since Ive been working with both pastel sticks and oil pastels lately
I love my prismacolor pencil..they can cost you money but these pencil’s quality are amazing and the pigments are the best It’s ok to try other brand atleast you can compare eco price pencil to those branded ones
Justin started watching this, and I have a couple Holbein pencils, and I agree about the fact that I just can't figure out why they are so expensive. The caran d'ache seel for pretty much the same price at my place, and they're just so much better, well, for me
Awww! Crayons from my country! In my opinion, Astra wanted to make such a cheaper version of Holbein crayons. But they did not quite succeed in something. I greet you from Poland! I watch every episode of yours!
Thank YOU SO MUCH.. I was hoping for an ALTERNATIVE.. And looking through my own.. will be Just fine.. I do not have the money to spend like I used too.. I am interested in the Black widow Monarch set.. well I'll see.. I Appreciate what you and other colorist do..Seriously I know it is A LOT More behind the scenes that is Very hard..that we don't see.. You have saved me MORE THAN ONCE.. Realizing What I have IS GOOD ENOUGH.. Love hugs to you and yours!! 🙏🙏🙏🤟❣🌻🥀
this was very helpful thank you I would like to get the Holbein pencils since I think they would work well with my art style but I'll get the Marco or Pastelowe first
The Pastelowe are beautiful and feel very nice. I just got them and was surprised they were from 3 years old up. They seem to be the only real pastels as a set.
Here in Japan the Holbeins are less expensive than Polychromos and way less expensive than the Caran d’ Ache Luminance. They are just insanely marked up outside of Japan.
Crayola pencils are beautiful but so hard I can hardly sharpen them. I still rate the Holbeins the highest. Since the airing of this video I purchased the Arteza pastels, which are also pretty nice. The original Arteza pencil sets lack pastel shades, in my opinion.
I don't mind paying the money for the Holbein's, as sets of 50, but the price for the 150 set out here is a bit over the top!! I can happily pay $210 for the 50's and then buy the ones I'd like to add on open stock. Though, if I were to go more budget friendly, I would probably buy the Black Widow set. I just wish they were obtainable open stock as well. The Arteza pencils would also be on my to buy list as well. Or, the Woomer pencils, which appear to be really good. Go see Lana Gloschat's review of these pencils. Another good pencil to try would be the Faber-Castel Goldfaber pencils.
Is there a video where you compare the pastel colored pencils to the Castle Arts pastel pencils? I haven't used most of these, but I really like the Castle Arts pastel colored pencils. They seem to be beautiful colors and easy to use. I have the Castle Arts soft pencils too. However, I haven't com aired them to others. Thanks and I've just ordered your color cubes (bundle of 2 cubes) so I'm looking forward to exploring the palates. I've been told that I do pick colors that go together well, but I tend to stay with the same colors often.
Hi Sarah, have you tried the Derwent pastel pencils? I would love to know what you think in comparison to the Holbeins. If you have, i will find the video eventually I'm late to the pencil art train.Thank you for your awesome efforts. D

I think they are perfect if they are just filling in color gaps in your other sets and they aren’t your only set.
@@SarahRenaeClark I have Prismacolor, Black Widows, so these are a good addition. I am now looking into buying Polychromos
Thank you Sarah for another excellent comparison video! While the larger pastel sets look pretty, for me I am very content with my small set of of pastels and using the white prismacolor to lighten the brighter colors.
I ENJOY YOUR VIDEOS THANKS, LOOKING FORWARD TO THE NEXT ONE
I REALLY appreciate all you've done to make this video, thank you 🥺🙏🏻
Thank you Sarah for this useful information on pastel coz l need to get 1 set for my mother using in her colouring books. Much appreciated you have done all the works for us. Have a great weekend & stay safe 👍.
Thank you so much for all your time you put into these videos for us !!
As soon as Lindsay said it in her video, I was like “yes! Such a good comparison!” So she definitely gets the credit for the Arteza vs Holbein find.
Thank you!
This was extremely useful, thanks a lot for the review, comparisons, and really useful tips.
Great idea on the skin tone sets! I’ll keep that in mind!
So under rated! Everyone of your videos are so professional
Thank you!
The level of obsessive-compulsiveness it took to accomplish this video is superhuman! Thanks, and well done 🥰
This is just a small insight into what the Color Catalog involved too 😜
@@SarahRenaeClark this whole colour pencil comparison and colour catalog projects of yours is insane! And much appreciated ❤️
Very helpful and informative. Thank you. Happy Colours, Sara xx
Stay safe and healthy.
thank u so much sarah! i trust your reviews so much! and now if i can't find the holbeins and that u love them more now too...i might try black widow first
best most honest review i have seen about non budget friendly pencils
Thanks so much for unique videos and all of the detail work you do for your presentations.
Wow. The effort! I am baffled. Wow! Great work, amazing video. Thx!
Great and thorough review as always, Sarah. I really appreciate ALL the work you do to give an educated choice. Brava!
What a lot of work! Thanks for comparing these for us.
Thats a gorgeous set love love the colours 🥰 never seen them before
I'm really curious how many pencils from the Tombow Irojiten sets (they have an awesome set of pastel colors) would match up to the Holbein pastels as well. I've downloaded your free colored in chart and I'm going to see if I can match up some of the colors that weren't quite matched up with the Prismacolor and Monarch sets, since those are the only two sets on the list I have :)
(btw, I used to post as Cassia Dee, in case you remember me. But I'm Cassia Colors now)
That a really nice video. Tanks a lot for it. Love the idea you share your knowledge to newbie like me.
Excited to see more of you :) !
This was a great review as always. Thank you for such an in-depth review, you're so appreciated. 💜
darn, wish i had seen this video before ordering the marcos from ali. oh well. :-) i only have 40 holbein including 12 of the pastel. nice thing is i can add a few at a time via open stock.
super video sarah!
Hi.I’m so interested to hear that you can buy Holbein open stock. Please can you say where from? Many thanks🖖🏼
I love seeing you sitting there surrounded by colored pencils.
I am buying the 12 set end of July 2023 to see if I get on with them I onlt have 120 Polychomos Faber Castell . .Great infor thank you Happy crafting xxxxxxx
Hi, I am from Poland. There are 24/48 Astra pastelowe crayons. They are a little thinner and easier to use. They seem softer. I recommend.
Great video…just a little too late for me. Unfortunately I already fell for these pencils and they do take more effort to use. Thanks you for you great video, you never disappoint
I have Holbein, Marco, Derwent, Caran d’Ache and others. My. Favorite has always been Prismacolor.
Very good, helpful review. I like the idea of choosing pastel colors from my existing sets. And I think you have given me a good excuse to buy some Black Widow pencils!
you are an AMAZING artist!!
I just bought a set of Black Widow Monarch after watching this... Am not an artist or professional but am learning about colour.
Ty for the free comparison chart. New subbie here…I don’t have Holbein but have the others..very interesting comparison ty…🥰
Thank you! Excellent comparison. Irojiten also has wonderful pastel colors.
Great comparisons and assessment. I have the Holbeins and they are pretty, but they are not the first pencil I grab.
Thank you thank you....for doing so much....so much work to do this.
I love my prismacolor pencil..they can cost you money but these pencil’s quality are amazing and the pigments are the best
It’s ok to try other brand atleast you can compare eco price pencil to those branded ones
Very informative! I also like neons and the Prismacolor Premier has some nice ones.
I recently bought a 24 set of Jasart Pastel coloured pencils from Spotlight for $20. I don't have any Holbein but I quite like them.
Thanks for doing this review and comparison!
Happy 40k subscriber🎉🎊
You are awesome. Thanks so much for the video and taking the time to make such detailed reviews! Are you planning to play with watercolor pencils ?
Eventually!
Thanks for this video! I think I’ll check out on of the Marco and Black Widow sets and if they don’t work for me I’ll just stick with my Prismacolors.
Hello 👋, Sarah. I would really love to see a review on the Shuttle Art set of 60 pastel colored pencils. Thank you, in advance.
Brutfiner has a exclusive set pastel pencils are amazing, would please compare this set to this other set!
this was very helpful thank you I would like to get the Holbein pencils since I think they would work well with my art style but I'll get the Marco or Pastelowe first
The Pastelowe are beautiful and feel very nice. I just got them and was surprised they were from 3 years old up. They seem to be the only real pastels as a set.
Great video. Thanks for all your hard work.
Here in Japan the Holbeins are less expensive than Polychromos and way less expensive than the Caran d’ Ache Luminance. They are just insanely marked up outside of Japan.
Well structured and executed video. Thanks!
I live for the tidy printed swatch sheets! This video is soo aesthetic
Crayola pencils are beautiful but so hard I can hardly sharpen them. I still rate the Holbeins the highest. Since the airing of this video I purchased the Arteza pastels, which are also pretty nice. The original Arteza pencil sets lack pastel shades, in my opinion.
hi i am a big fan of you but question can i have some tips for my chameleon markers and how to use watercouler and what made you start art
I haven’t used chameleon markers sorry! I’ve always loved art
@@SarahRenaeClarkthats ok do you have any tips for begining watercouler
Have you used Holbein meltz with Holbeins?
No! Sounds interesting!
I did a bigger video where I compared every brand, and the pastels were all in there
Hi Sarah, have you tried the Derwent pastel pencils? I would love to know what you think in comparison to the Holbeins. If you have, i will find the video eventually I'm late to the pencil art train.Thank you for your awesome efforts. D
I only own the Prisma colours so I'm very happy with my Holbein pastels.
