Having consumed alcohol daily for about 45 years at the level of at least a bottle of wine/six pack of beer/half a bottle of spirit (not all of them, just one of them) or more every day, I became sober at the start of the year. Over the years I’ve had a small break or two, but in general I’ve been a solid drinker for all of my life. I now sleep much better and are starting to see a number of other benefits in my statistics. I don’t miss its affect, but I do miss the taste and social connections. This year I will be dry for the whole 12 months

Depression from being overwhelmed, overworked, and living alone screwed my health and habits. My social life is dead too. The good Lord pulled me out of that funk, and I can't stop this wave of winning. It starts a snowball effect of good feelings, positivity, and no excuses.

@michaelo2522 I am guessing you are responding to me. There isn't high levels of arsenic in foods. However if you eat any food with fish sauce or soy sauce or yeast extract or tomato or certain cheeses or anchovies you are getting a significant quantity of MSG not some tiny little trace which is unavoidable. So other than those strict carnivore diet people who don't eat cheese or any sauces you are likely to consume significant quantities of MSG on occasion.

I'm in no way advocating Mcdonald's fries, but, on average, a Mcdonalds is more likely to rotate its oils out with fresh oils more frequently - both out of sheer necessity (volume of sales) and presence of a management structure/system operators. While even a well maintained Mcdonalds might have oil you deem as grossly unhealthy, there is a tier of fryer oil below that which exists in poorly run restaurants, places struggling to make money, and small unsupervised kitchens with crews that don't care. More places than you can imagine are keeping the same reheated oils for more than a few days, more like weeks plus, to the degree that your food is being cooked in a vat of carcinogen. If I had to guess, I'd say the predominance of health issues from deep frying come from oil practices that exceed negligence, yet go unseen, and are not part of "studies" while all the focus is directed at easy targets like McDs which has a turnover of product that would keep it from falling into this category.

    • @JD-mz1rl
      @JD-mz1rl 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

I tend to agree with this analysis, and have thought the same for quite a while.
However, i also think that on average, this factor has been somewhat averaged out -- meaning, fried foods using best practices probably aren't as bad as we think they are, because the foods made with bad practices have "skewed the average" so to speak. So although really stale & reheated oil _is_ really bad, in infrequent enough consumption, our body probably has a lot of capability to properly handle enough... It's more about the regular repeated consumption that really overwhelms the system and starts causing all the damage

At the advice of a counselor I was seeing for anxiety , I cut out all additives and dyes . Within 2 days my overall nervousness lowered quite a bit . Granted a lot of those items also have very high sodium levels . Occasionally I have something with additives , like a canned soup , and I feel it soon after. My heart starts pounding and I get agitated . The tricky part though is I was raised on foods like pot pies, frozen pizzas, and Hamburger Helper . So there's that comfort food appeal . So sometimes I mock up my own healthier versions of them .

Industrial seed oils consist mostly of linoleic acid. It has been shown to oxidize in the body (and oxidize LDL in the process) and not just in a deep fryer or sitting in the open for weeks. Industrial seed oils are already partly oxidized due to high temperature processing. This is why chemical agents are used to remove the stench. Residual amounts of these agents and solvents (e.g. hexane) used to extract the seed oils are contained in every bottle of "vegetable oil". There is also a substantial variance in the amount based on different production batches and from different companies. If you are going to exclude MSG, then it does not make sense to not exclude industrial seed oils. If you have a choice and still feel compelled to use a "vegetable oil", then choose extra virgin olive oil. At least it is not semi-oxidized and contaminated with residual toxins.

I had no idea what you were going to say but I expected you to give it a slight thumbs up like most health related podcasters. I think MDs tend to be neutral on alcohol or support light alcohol use (are they beholden to the alcohol lobby or do they exist in an alcohol-rich culture?). My spouse drinks alcohol and there is a place for alcohol for some people. I am in recovery so I have a big dog in the fight for taking a strong position against alcohol consumption - my life. How do podcasters who pay so much attention to health put poison in their body? (You have interviewed such people.) And yet you stand tall and take a clear position against alcohol. Yes - the body waits as alcohol is processed in our hard-working, amazing livers. That isn't healthy!

The MSG thing is sadly laughable and historically racist. (look up the term "nocebo" for your claimed effects)
The first study you mention just talks about MSG improving the pleasantness of food. Of course it does, because you have savory receptors on your tongue which are glutamate receptors detecting protein because the proteins you chew always have glutamate. Your conclusion that this is "tricking your brain" is just an idiotic take. When you find a steak savory because the proteins in it contain glutamate, is that tricking your brain? or is that just that you have evolved to like to eat protein. What about eating food unsalted? When you salt and pepper a food like a hamburger or vegetable and find it more delicious, is it tricking your brain that you want to eat more of it. Try unsalted butter on toast, the sprinkle some salt on it, does it taste much better? and if you want to eat more of it then that's tricking your brain? Adding any seasonings in preparing foods by your "logic" is tricking your brain. LOL.
In that second study, they were feeding the rats a dose of 4g of MSG per Kilogram of bodyweight. That's a dose of about 330 grams of MSG for a 180 pound human. That's almost 3/4 of pound of MSG ! That's of course a bit naive. The human equivalent dose will be something less than that but it's still going to be a whopping large dose! It's difficult to directly translate rat data into what amount would have the same effects in humans. But a decent estimate is if you divide the rat dose by 6.2 to get an estimate of a human equivalent dose as suggested by this publication (Nair AB, Jacob S. A simple practice guide for dose conversion between animals and human. J Basic Clin Pharm. 2016 Mar;7(2):27-31). You then get an estimate human equivalent dose of about 53 grams for a 180 pound human which is almost 2 ounces of MSG!
To quote the FDA, "The glutamate in MSG is chemically indistinguishable from glutamate present in food proteins. Our bodies ultimately metabolize both sources of glutamate in the same way. An average adult consumes approximately 13 grams of glutamate each day from the protein in food, while intake of added MSG is estimates at around 0.55 grams per day."
So this rat study cited in the video, is using an human equivalent dose of MSG that is on the order of 100 times daily than a full day's consumption of added MSG! Toxic effects of anything is a factor of dosage. (Water is toxic to your brain at too high a dosage.)
So again, you are demonizing of the seasoning of a dish with 0.3-0.5 g of MSG. On top of that, MSG is considered a valid way to enhance flavor while lowering salt content of the food, so the food is still enjoyable. That can be a real health benefit to many people. So again, yes you are fear mongering in this video. And adding to it with an unsavory dose of racism.

"I don't want to eat anything that is tricking my brain into wanting to voluntarily eat more"
I guess that is one take on not trying to eat tasty things, but at this point, what even is the purpose of life. I mean come on, salt and sugar and fat all are "tricking your brain" into making it consume excess calories, that's basically how animals evolved to like certain tastes. And face it, it's only part of the equation too; MSG doesn't just magically make mid things taste great, it is a tiny ingredient and if the food is tasty with it, it already was going to be absurdly delicious before adding a dusting of culinary crack.

Thomas DeLauer's video on the seven foods he'll never eat again highlights his commitment to health and well-being, grounded in a mix of solid scientific evidence and personal health philosophy. Here are the key takeaways:
    1. **Avoidance of Artificial Fats**: DeLauer strongly advises against consuming margarine and shortening due to their trans fat content, which is linked to inflammation and metabolic issues.
    2. **Emulsifiers as Gut Health Enemies**: Products like instant pudding that contain emulsifiers such as polysorbate 80 and 20 are avoided because of their potential to harm the gut barrier, affecting overall health.
    3. **MSG's Undesirable Effects**: Despite its common usage to enhance flavor, MSG is avoided due to its association with overeating and potential neurotoxic effects, along with personal adverse reactions.
    4. **Risks in Fast Food**: Specifically targeting McDonald's french fries, DeLauer highlights the dangers of acrylamide and unhealthy cooking oils, pointing out the broader issues of caloric density and carcinogenic risk in fast foods.
    5. **Alcohol's Negative Impact on Health**: Citing research on alcohol's link to increased visceral fat and impaired metabolic functions, DeLauer has eliminated alcohol from his diet, underscoring its lack of benefits.
    6. **Artificial Colors and Child Behavior**: The avoidance of Red Dye 40 is based on studies suggesting it can lead to hyperactivity and attention issues in children, raising concerns about its impact on adults.
    7. **Concerns Over Farm-Raised Fish**: Specifically, farm-raised tilapia is avoided due to potential contaminants and unethical feeding practices in some countries, highlighting a preference for more naturally sourced proteins.

Msg is naturally occurring in tons of the healthy foods you're already eating. Glutamate and sodium are both required to live and function. The only danger from msg is exactly the same risks as over eating a high sodium volume. Sodium in high enough doses is lethal. Are you going to stop eating that? Not enough and you die too.
The key to correct MSG usage is treating balancing your total sodium intake. If you add MSG you need to reduce some of the salt you would have used, you can't just double up.
The side effects you're describing are the same as overdosing on sodium.

Warning to keto friends, polysorbate 60 is often added to coconut milk. Read your labels 🏷. Watch out for Xanthan in your keto treats, too. Not the best stuff for the gut.

No alcohol issues with me I'm just not willing to give up my Friday night 1 shot of Vodka w Fresca and fresh lemon as it's the only vice I have and I enjoy it. I do respect Thomas point of view and appreciate the facts provided along with all his other info/facts and opinions he shares and NO WAY am I unsubscribing for giving his opinion. I've learned so much from him and my respect to you Sir is earned and well deserved! If I ever see you in public I would happily shake your hand and say thank you.

I was keto/low carb for the past 5 years, and when I cycled off and ate some regular candy and wheat based products I was in physical pain.

I'm thinking that, if there was a correlative study between those who prepare their own food and those who eat at restaurants...eating at restaurants would show a substantial increase in All Cause Mortality. 🤔
Save money...Live longer/healthier...prepare your Own food!

    👍🤩💝I agree.
I love french fries but make them as healthily as I can - I eliminated all things McDs 20 years ago. I rarely drink wine but sometimes I do drink red wine.

I can’t imagine you going to McDonald’s at all, much less eating their fries.

I agree with everything you said. I won't eat any farm raised fish or crustaceans no matter where they are sourced from.

So I'm not seeing polysorbate 80 or 20 in the ingredients list of jello pudding mix/ fat free-sugar free. Am I missing something? Was this an old ingredient? DO I still need to be concerned about this product? (We use it in our homemade ice cream.) Thanks for your response.

I had a terrible bout of gastritis a while back and that has totally changed my thinking. I'm now all about a healthy gut lining and microbiome, and alcohol was one of the first things to go. I was surprised how much better my skin started to look once I gave it up! Thanks for sharing all this, it's incredibly important info.
