I bought one of these mowers back in 2010 (HRU196D), honestly the best investment I have made, after using it daily with my mowing biz since then it has never skiped a beat, the honda powerplant is bulletproof, highly recommended.
I just want to add that for anyone who hasn't tried the blade clutch version, you really don't know what you are missing. It is the best invention since sliced bread in my opinion, once you have one guarantee you won't look back. It makes the mower so much more versatile and user friendly, plus you don't have to start it 500 times every mow. It is actually a feature Honda have taken from their high-end commercial mowers (early 2000s era) and brought to the buffalo series. I was skeptical at first, but since owning one I wouldn't consider anything else, the benefits are phenomenal.
I agree, it’s great if you are bagging. I can’t stand when my bag is full and I gotta start the mower every time. It’s also great to use with the self drive. Use the engine to pull the mower around if you aren’t cutting. Good for loading on ramps or pushing it back to the garage after you finish cutting.
Such a familiar story mate. That’s why I crowned it the best push mower. So easy to start and cuts beautifully , glad they re released this series again 🤘
Hello from The States (Kentucky) 🖐 Bought my first Honda mower in 1999...it's a self propelled 3 in 1, (discharge, mulching, bagging) unit w/ a 6hp motor & still to this day it's a one pull start everytime ! Original price back then was $650 which was a lot considering any competition w/ the same features & slightly larger motors (6.5hp) were 1/3 the price but I did my research and that's why I'm still using it effortlessly today. Enjoy the videos & your thorough explanations on your channel. Catch ya later !
Gday mate yeah seriously you can’t beat them they are great mowers.. I got my first one back in 1988 . Hope ya have a great week mate stay warm over there 🤙
It’s so different than what we have in the states .we won’t get anymore here the factory in North Carolina ceased production and now makes side by side off road vehicles for more profitability . There are still some for sale . I bought 2 HRX217HYAs . They sit new in the box for when I want to get rid of my 1992 mower . My first Honda was in 1982. These last 3 are there plastic deck . It’s really indestructible. I couldn’t imagine life without one ,so I bought 2 more . The top of the line like mine is $999 here. You can get mine with an electric start if you have trouble starting a mower for $1099 U.S. . Great video . So neat to see the different models in different countries . 👍
I wish I had seen this review before I went out shopping :) Would have not stopped next to Masport shop whom had seen my clothing and assumed I was shopping on price. Anyways... Off to my local Honda Motorcycle shop, great service ! Honest, friendly... Already sorta knew I wanted this mower, bought it. Got it home... Quick spray of the fasteners with CRC soft seal (because I do these things) One Gentle pull and she was going... , idling like a sleeping kitten.... Warm her up... Get it to speed, do a few test height cuts dialed my height in and OMFG ! This just works ! Honestly is the most solid mower I have used (feels a little heavy but hey... I will get stronger) The biggest issue with my lawn is clogging. Hey... I filled the catcher completely twice and did not realise.... No clogging, no clumping .. just works. The dead man lever, It will take some getting used to for me because previous mowers I have had never had them, but I can see the benifit of safety and the fact it starts with one easy pull I might as well consider it starts as easy as a switch. Great purchase ! Cry once, buy once. Glad I forgoed compromised quality for more feature rich self propelled mowers for the same cost. This is a no BS mower.
I have one that is over 20 years old and I got it for $250 off Gumtree. Still starts first pull. Doesn't look too pretty and engine is a bit noisier than the newer ones, but it does a great job.
Luv Honda mowers and whisper sniper I bought a Honda Buffalo years ago after mowers mixing the fuel that mower was simply the best I was in heaven when I bought it never missed a beat to this day and the whippet sniper about to buy a new mower Honda of cause the old girl is going in for service and spruce up it never let me down so I'm keeping it it was so good to me on the 5, acres Honda is the way to go no stress never let me down over the yrs so getting a new one that will see me out and will be looked after thanks Honda you made mowing a pleasure and whiper snipers easy thanks 👍
Not one feature different to my 21 year old Chinese made Rover, which still starts first pull and has cut heavy buffalo in Townsville in all conditions - even flooded areas in the wet season and it did not cost anywhere near $1100 or even your $600 of thirty years ago, more like $320 if memory serves me right. I think it might have its second spark plug in it, with regular oil changes and clean air filter it has served me well. Maybe the cutting heights are different, I don't need low cutting so it isn't a concern, but it has one lever height adjustment, 4 swing blades, no clog (it hasn't clogged with me yet), mulch plug which is basically the same. It hasn't the lazy American long start rope to catch on vegetation and shrubs so that is a bonus. Best of luck with the Honda.
Hi mate, 21years would nearly be the last of the Aussie (Brisbane built) Rover mowers wouldnt it? They had a nice cut on them very sharp and a distinctive sound from the 4 blades.
@@theaussielawn this is a Chinese built machine, could be an early one, bought on the strength of an Australian one which was still going well but was underpowered for the Townsville buffalo. It survived until a son-in-law who can break anything got hold of it and killed it. The Chinese one has surprised me with its performance and reliability. The only complaint is that the front wheel mounting bracket thingy (a technical term) could be stronger as the wheels don't align very well.
@@oigleoystereater2003 Old Chinese-made were actually quite good as almost all the parts were imported, the Chinese workers only assembled the parts together under orginal manufacturer's supervision. I have a Chinese-made Rover too with US-made engine, it's still going strong. Newer Chinese made are 100% Chinese OEM and they'd cut corners to keep the price really low to kill off competition.
@@tonyvu2011 mine has a Chinese engine which is far better than any other U.S. made Briggs that I've had to endure, as I said it has been a brilliant unit. If anyone cuts corners in my experience it is the Yanks, never had anything from there that has been of that good a quality at all.
@@oigleoystereater2003 That Chinese engine had Japanese and Taiwanese made components, that's why it's lasted. My brother bought a brand new Chinese mower 4 years ago and only used once a month, the engine blew up 3 months ago, he bought a Honda to replace.
Purchased one a few months back after seeing your review. I use it daily on my mowing run and love it on the flat but she’s a workout as soon as you hit any sort of incline or spongy turf 😂 love the videos mate.
Thanks for tuning in mate. It is a weighty mower def agree with that. But it should easily give you years of trouble free easy starting service. Glad you are enjoying the HRU its a great mower.
@@timthelawnmowerman Hmmm good question If your going to be doing any scalping / renovation type work Id suggest the little Victa 18" Mastercut460 but if not there's a few other options like the big bob, or the bushranger utility.
Thank you for your video. You have just made my mind up. I too bought my first Honda mower back in 1991 as a kid. I think I payed around the $900 mark back then. It is still going today but my exwife has claimed it. Grrrr. The only thing I replaced on it was a couple of wheels. The only reason they cracked is because I basically mowed rough paddocks with it. I have been putting up with an old second hand Talon which has just packed it in. Doing research on new mowers it's like there's no perfect mower. Reviews where saying that this model Honda has issues blocking up and throttle problems. Watching your video gave us an insight of the model as I have struggled to find one at my local Honda dealers to have a close look. I thought watching your video I was looking at the new version of my 1991 Honda. Not much has changed by the looks of it. Thank you for pointing out about the blade brake having more things to go wrong. I was going for the blade brake as I don't want to have to start it everytime I let go of it. I have a velcro strap solution for that. The only other thing that I see might be a pain is the cord halfway up the handle get caught going up trees. See how it goes but may have to modified if it becomes an issue. Thank you once again. Loved your video. I just hit the subscribe button.
Thanks for the sub mate and welcome to the channel , I reckon the one like mine is all the Honda you need i feel they don’t quite catch the grass quite as well as the early ones but it doesn’t get clogged or anything like that.
The fuel tank cap has a vacuum?pressure relief valve, with little holes under it. I always clean them of debris every time I remove it, to stop any falling in/to the tank!
Normally not one to endorse products, but can definitely say and agree this is genuinely the best push mower you can buy. I’ve tried them all over the years and have come back to this one. The previous model with the closed chute wasn’t much chop, I’m so glad they’ve come back to the open rear design, has a hand throttle, and the proper hard plastic catcher
Hi Brenton, i bought the HRU196 with the snorkel about 5 years ago as I mow a mum and dads lawn aswell as my own., and my old 2 stroke victa had finally given up the ghost. The only complaint I have is the catcher which can get clogged with wet grass. I have thought about trying to open up the rear of the mower as it is a half chute into the canvas bag. Im sure the new ones don't have this issue anymore. I love this mower change the oil twice a year, and im sure it will see my another 30 years or more
Yeah that model was during the "dark days " Due to public outcry they had to reintroduce the full chute ones, My dad has the same one you speak of and has the same complaint.
Can you please let me know if this is heavy to maneuver as I lawn (100 m front) has of slope. Also, I move between fronts n back lawn which is tight access and need to lift little bit. Only the weight is stopping to go for this else I was looking for self propelled.
It's a very solid / sturdy mower and as a result it is a little more heavy than some of its competition. Im use to it and I dont find it a problem but have heard others say its heavy to use. For me I will always have a HRU in my shed its just a no nonsense mower that does what it says on the box
I learned/t something new toduy: Keep Ur mower away from low branches, coz they can pull on the starter cord, which will engage the starter, and U will hear a scraping metallic noise, coming from it! I'm glad I still have my HRU194, which has the pull handle down on the engine, cover.
Hey mate love the video just bought one! How did you go about running in the mower? Anything special or just run to the service schedule? Thanks for your awesome videos!
I’ve had one of these since they came out and has never missed a beat, now I’m in the market for a self propelled but the smallest in the Honda is now 21 inch which is too large for what I need.
@@theaussielawn NSW, Scone us a bit far to go. Most of the dealers are saying Honda is telling them next month but apparently they’ve been telling that for a while now. The old one still runs like a charm but it’s just getting a little heavy to push these days.
Howdy. Great channel👍 I have a few q for you about this mower if you can help that would be great. I’ve been told the base cracks around the wheels?? The rear Shute has now changed snd the throat is smaller?? And your opinion on bags and not a hard incased catcher. Guy at the store was really pushing that bag is better you just need airflow. Cheers 👍
Hi mate I'm assuming you are based here in AUS? The HRU19 & HRU!96 series has a full open rear shute. I've never experienced any cracking around the wheels on the alloy base decks nor have I heard of it before now. I wonder if he was pushing the bag models because the plastic catcher range are very popular and harder to get atm. (It's worth noting the self drive HRU 21" has a smaller shute and a bag and although a good machine can experience some clogging comparing to the HRU19 and HRU196 series
The first thing id be looking at is either damage to the blades or incorrectly installed blades. If your not mechanically minded I would take it to your mower mechanic to be inspected ASAP
I’m chasing a new mower, I tried the battery route but it wasn’t for me, If you didn’t buy a Honda. What would be your next pick for a smaller kikuyu lawn. 120sqm. As I don’t like the idea of having the dead man handle. And the engine stopping when I empty the catcher. On the cheaper version. What would you suggest? Anything from Victa etc?
I have the dead man version but I may or may not have a little bit of tie wire on hand , 120sqm isn't much I would consider perhaps something like a Victa classic cut Frame is still assembled here on that particular model too from recollection
their the best commercial mowers the hru196's, I picked one up used for $400 the guy was a landscaper and he said they will do 20,000 hours no problem. The only problem I have found how heavy they are, not the easiest mower to push up a hill.
Hey mate, I’m young and never owned a mower before and looking to buy one. 2 questions; with honda stopping production will I still be able to buy parts or new blades or will that be a problem a few years down the track? Second question is the house I moved into has about 90square meters of turf split into 5 sections. It’s a battle axe house so abit of a weird layout. The sections are small and some have strange unconventional shapes. Like curved areas working around the garden or pavers etc. one patch is almost circular, one patch has an s bend following the pavers. Would the engine break make stuff this hard? I saw that you tie a wire to hold it there. Or would you recommend a smaller mower for someone like me? I really want something good quality as I’m starting to get into proper lawn care. Thanks mate
Hi mate thanks for the message it's important to know that the Australian Assembled mowers (HRU series) are not being discounted, Its the American Hondas that are on the chopping block. I you need a mower that will last ages, be reliable and cut at a wide range of heights you cant go past a Honda HRU series
Great video and thank you. While not a pro, I have a substantial area to keep mown at my house where a ride on just won't work. If possible, a couple of questions please. My research has resulted in the Honda HRU196 you review here as being best for me. Since your review was done a year or two ago, anything to add after you have used the machine for your livelihood such as issues that have risen? And although I would love to get the self drive option, it just seems like another thing that can / will go wrong. Reviews are not kind on self driven mower drives and gearboxes, even Honda's. Thanks again...
Hi sorry for the delay Ive only just found your question. The HRU196 is a great mower and my all time favourite catcher mower its versatile, well built and reliable. Apart from them being heavier than most I really cant put my finger on anything I don't like about it. I would have got the self drive version too if it didnt have a smaller grass shute but I just wanted simple no nonsense year in year out reliability
Thanks for the reply. Well, I just ordered one pretty much on your video because what you advised made a lot of sense to me.. Large grass chute was key to me also. Would have liked the 21" cut but couldn't bring myself to get a self drive because its just another thing to go wrong and I want this puppy around for a long time...
If I had to buy a new lawnmower, it would be a Honda after seeing your review on it. The newer victa looks like it won’t last, too many flimsy plastic parts for my liking.
Hi mate, they are not a huge seller here in Australia as they are more effective for cool season grasses (from a striping perspective) . From memory Masport sold one here years ago and perhaps they still do.
Mate you sold me on this I just chased an bought the same exact one probably the last one in Sydney everywhere these are in back order. Great machine thanks for the recommendation. Only thing though does yours shoot shavings off to the LHS rear wheel? Mine does that and bog the wheel making it pretty hard to push. Love the sound and everything else about it. 🙏
Hey mate great choice on the HRU196, I can’t say that I do have an issue like the one you mention. It might be worth having it checked out incase there’s an issue with your particular mower.
Had 196 with blade clutch around 10 years ago when i just started doing lawnmowing business ,unforturnatelly due to the heavy weight i had to give up and bought a 216 for self propell feature. 196 for sure is a solid build mower but i really wonder who would buy it,for most people(contractor or homeowner) it is just too heavy to push around.
@@theaussielawn I actually use the honda that is 19 inches, engine brake, and has the smaller engine. 170 CSV I think. I am very happy with it. And for bigger areas I have a kubota 21 inches self propelled with the cxv 160 and blade brake
HI, thanks for the great video. I watched your review of the Toro 60v battery mower and I'm almost sold on it, but curious how much lower this Honda will cut than the Toro, also which will handle long thick grass the best. I had my old Honda set to its lowest setting most of the time.
The toro handles the long stuff really well, Did you see my vid on it? The honda goes way lower it will go down to 16mm officially but you can sneak past the lower setting easily and cut a little but shorter still. I prob wouldnt put these to mowers in the same class. The honda is a commercial style machine thats very very versatile. The Toro is a great mower for general mowing use down to 25mm. I potentially wouldnt suggest the toro for couch grass owners due to HOC not going low enough, but thats like all American mowers
@@theaussielawnI’ve been advised the HRN and HRX twin blade mowers are not good at cutting buffalo. I was advised to get a HRU Buffalo model for buffalo lawns. Not sure of the validity of this or was just the Honda dealer trying to move HRU models which are assembled in Australia.
Hi mate loving the channel and watching the back catalogue of videos. Question, what is the best sort of blade setup 4 blade or 2 blade? I have couch out front and buffalo in the shaded backyard. Currently have a rover 4 blade. Starts first time just using the catcher as I don't think it's a mulcher mower.
And why did they flip the direction of the Fuel Valve!? And they don't actually show/tell U which is which! Unlike on the HRU194. Before I just left it On but with this one I seem to lose fuel, due to evaporation!? No I can't smell it so I doubt there is a leak.
Yeah I do mate, The HRX is great for cool season turf, Kikuyu, buffalo etc. But it dont go low enough for couch and isn't a good choice for scalp renovations.
Great stuff! I'm looking for a mower for my business, I don't care for a lawn mower that's going to last a lifetime, but want something that cuts/mulches just as good as HRU196 but something that's light enough for me to pick up and throw in the back of my tray. Do you think HRU19 would do the job? Cheers!
Hi Adam, Yeah the HRU19 is still a great choice the main difference is the different motor and no adjustable throttle apart from that its the same cutting system as the HRU196. The HRU19 will be marginally lighter too, although will still be a weighty machine
Nice review....I'm on the market for a new mower, my old self propelled HRU 216 had better day, I think I go for this one as the shoot is wide open and less chances to get clogged.
G'duy, mite. Great review/vid. I'm considering getting one, myself, to replace a HRU194. Do U ever regret not getting the "blade brake", which is surely just a cable operated clutch? Which one do the contractors get? Are U still happy with 2 hi & 2 lo lift blades? Did U buy 'em in bulk, up front? And how about the blade bolt kit? Do U replace the bolt/s every time?
No regrets in engine brake and would pick it again.. (Less to go wrong under the deck) Most contractors would have a self drive id think. Im running 4 high lift blades now (it sucks a little power out of the engine but its still fine) My Honda gets blades once a year post reno it dont get a lot of use as most of my mowing is cylinder or ride on. I just buy the kit comes with bolts so happy days
@@theaussielawn Thanks, mite. Got one myself. Exact same model, and a plastic clamp I use when warming it up. Very happy with it. U're right, I don't need a blade brake/clutch, nor would I trust it!, with my fingers/hand/arm/life, but I do like the engine brake coz it stops it quicker. I first drop the revs and then release the handle smartly, to minimise the wear on it.
Great video mate, very informative. I bought one on a whim from the mower shop today to replace my old trusty Corvette 2 stroke. I've noticed it's a bit heavier which I don't think is an issue and I took it for a quick 10 min spin when i got home. Feels solid. Do you get tempted to velcro the handle?
Hi mate, Since you are mowing tall fescue I reckon the HRN would be a sound choice, in fact the people who's buffalo lawn I did the scalp on have since bought a HRN and love it. The only lawns Id really advise against it are short cut couch lawns. But for cool season and buffalo I think you will be very happy.
Hi mate loving the vids i have also purchased the same mower and am loving it but would also like to purchase a snorkel kit for mine if you dont mind me asking where did you get yours from and how much are they cheers
haha well there has been a little hiccup re the snorkel kit, apparently Honda has discontinued the kit due to "emission requirements " 🤦♂️ However my local dealer Scone Outdoors has been amazing and are currently sourcing a aftermarket kit. I'll let you know more when I know more if you like.
Hi there, I'm planning on starting a business in New Zealand but we have alot of wet conditions, what mower would you recommend? Also the content is very informative.
If you are looking for a walk behind mower honda HRU is hard to go past plus being an alloy base it wont rust out long term in the damp conditions plus its catching performance is great in damp conditions too. Consider the self propelled version if you will be spending lots of hours behind it as they are a heavy mower compared to the competition
This was an informative video, thanks. I'm after a rotary mower with similar characteristics for a somewhat different reason. All my grass is low cut with a cylinder mower, but I have a tree which drops rubbish all over the lawn. Right now I leaf blow it off, but it is very time consuming, noisy and not that effective. I'm after a rotary to vacuum everything up, which requires high lift blades, low height of cut and a wide open shoot for effective collection and bagging. Unfortunately I'm a fan of electric and hate anything petrol (I converted one of my Scott Bonnars to battery power, the other is plug in). My battery rotary (and most others on the market) is useless for this task as is has low lift blades combined with "load sensing" technology that reduces the RPMs at light load to increase efficiency/run time (which I don't care about), plus is designed for the American market and only goes down to 30mm and has a narrow exit shoot for mulching. I find it interesting that Australian mowers often use a disk with 2 or 4 swing back blades, while American mowers all seem to use bar blades (sometimes two). I wonder what’s more effective in terms of lift? Ideally I'd like to try and find a cheap old Honda with a faulty engine so I can convert it to battery, but their commercial engines are so reliable they're probably the last thing to go! At the price of a new Honda I could buy a Dyson cordless vacuum and use that instead...
Thanks for you message I have some ideas for you to explore that may be of use. If you search for HRU194 or HRU 195 you will find potentially an old honda with same features as per video that you can transform to electric. As for difference in cutting blades ill try keep this simple brief and general. American mowers are built around the concept of mulch first catch second mulching does not require the suction action. Where as Aussie engineered mowers are primarily catching mowers and some like this honda have the ability to mulch. Primary catcher mowers will always have a much better suction effect to get grass, leaves etc into a catcher. On a side note I do have a toro personal pace mower with the bar blade and it isn't in the same league when it comes to catching. I might even down the track to a catching comparison vid Cheers Brenton
Hmmm very different mowers, if your cutting couch Id lean toward the honda. If your mowing longer cut lawns over 25mm and time is money then id say the toro
Gday mate this Honda really is a great option and my pick of the rotary mowers for day in day out mowing. It does only go down to 16mm but you will get a nice cut from it on the second lowest or 3rd lowest setting and save the lowest setting for the annual scalp 🤘
@@JZ-rc1de with a rotary I’d be less inclined to go super low mate what sorta couch do you have ? The only other rotary mower that has a catcher and goes considerably lower is a masport , it’s a cheaper machine and in the past have been known to throw the odd blade disc off which isn’t a great thing to have happen.
The Aussie Lawn yeah I was considering a masport but not very impressed with the one I currently have. About to lay tiftuf out the front and Santa Ana out the back (price considerations!) or maybe seed the back with Mackays couch
Can’t go wrong with Honda. That’d be my pick to replace my HRU19D, I notice Honda MPE are selling the US style mowers with variable mulch/catch and independent height adjusters. Too much to go wrong. I run mine with four high lift blades, it still mulches ok. Are you still using the UMK422 brushcutter? Bought mine in 1997 when they were first released, still going like a champ. Carby could do with a clean, it only starts second pull from cold now 😁 If only the Loncin knockoff of a Honda GX120 on my Rover was as easy to start.
Phil Richmond yeah mate still using the UMK mine must be about the same vintage now I think of it. Only ever replaced the primer bulb and fuel lines once. Yeah I prefer rugged n simple very much old school here 🤣
The Aussie Lawn, mine is the same, one primer bulb replaced. Proves why spending a little more is cheaper in the long run. The quality is appreciated long after the price is forgotten.
Firstly mate great videos , and even more great work answering all the comments on your videos , before I pull the trigger thought I'd talk to the expert, you think this will go okay on a Kiwi Lawn, 110m of Fine Fescue cutting somewhere between 50-70mm and then 170/200m of Rye down at 15-25mm ? Cheers
Hi Dan, Thanks for the message, Yeah I think the HRU will do a great job on the cool season stuff. Cool season grasses such as yours generally have a much higher moisture content than the warm season stuff so having an alloy deck is really beneficial as it wont rust out over time especially if you're not one to wash your mower after each use.
Thank you so much for this no-nonsense review...... I wasn't sure what to go for, but, I did know I wanted a quality product that just works, time after time, and after seeing this, you made the decision so clear. Thank you again. sláinte Patrick H
@@theaussielawn Brenton, I purchased today and gave my grass a cut after being neglected for the last few weeks, so it was rather long in some areas. All I can say is amazing. These just work. It cut effortlessly and I did cut my sapphire buffalo on my nature strip, without the catcher, but with the mulch plug in place - again amazing - in some areas that was not as long , the results were outstanding with zero residue on the lawn surface. Anyway, I just wanted to thank you. Love your channel and I am so envious of your great putting green. Does it mean your putting is awesome? Surely having access to such a beautiful surface, your putting would seriously good? Sláinte Patrick.
@@phamiltonphoto that’s great to hear mate such a great all round mower in my opinion. My putting skills are definitely not on point 🤣 I’m more about the grass than the putt if that makes sense 😝
Technically yes unless u go with the blade brake version . But off the record I may or may not use a bit of tie wire around the handle bar and slide it off when finished mowing 🤫
@@crnkin2 the only reason i didnt get that one is I have that system on my toro and there are extra bearings etc under the deck that need attention, I just wanted simple.
@@theaussielawn Yeah I'll look at the Toro I think. I'm not a contractor, my 40 odd year old Masport just got a strip and rebuild over lockdown but she's really about time for replacement.
The only thing I see that is wrong with it is the rubber flap. It would mean that you couldn't pull the mower back towards you, eg from underneath a shrub/bushes.
Na mate the flap is super flexible it doesn’t interfere at all with pulling the mower backwards... I had to remove the flap off my toro as it did exactly what your saying 🤙
I didn't end up proceeding with the kit mate, It was discontinued due to "emission laws" Yes you can order the parts individually but I just couldn't be bothered in the end even though some awesome viewers actually listed all the individual part numbers for the bits.
Sorry to ask a really dumb question but can you lock the dead man bar in place so the mower doesnt turn off everytime i empty the catcher? I have the hru19 domestic version. Ive read the manual over n over but cant see any info. Again sorry for the dumb question.
No its definitely not a dumb question the short answer is no, As it's a safety device designed to cut the mower when you let go of the handle bars, However a creative person may come up with a way to override the system if you preferred a more traditional mowing experience haha
Nice but don’t like the bar at the top you have to hold. If you need to take your hands off the handle you don’t necessarily want the engine stopping. Unfortunately it seems all mowers these days have that.
Unfortunately its been discontinued due to emissions laws apparently. But somewhere in this thread there is a fella who has listed the individual part numbers so technically you could order all that stuff and end up with a "snorkel kit"
Yeah mate I sure am, I dont use it a great deal as most of my yard is cylinder mowed or ride on but when I do use it I enjoy it. It is heavy to push compared to the competition but I'm ok with that as I know how long my first one lasted. Its a well built machine.
I think the Victa 22 inch mulchmaster cuts low to about .7 of an inch. I'd like to buy one minus the engine and place a Honda on it. They used to have Honda as a choice but no longer. So I wonder if I can by the Victa minus the engine. The Honda Buffalo, made in Australia that is assembled in Australia with parts made in China. Is that right? It's worth thinking about as a choice
G'day Alan, Yeah just had a look at the Victa specs I think they call it the Mulchmaster 560 now it cuts down to 18mm. Its a shame they went away from the Honda Option I wonder if its because Victa is owned by Briggs these days... Yeah thats right the Honda is assembled here with parts from various countries e.g Motor is made in Thailand and there is Chinese components in it too, I do still like the fact that Honda does have some Aussie employment in the assembly area (as does Victa with a few of their models)
@@theaussielawn Hi mate. Yes I suspect it's due to Briggs and Stratton ownership they now won't place a Honda engine on them. I suspect that what you say re the parts and assembly is correct. The Vanguard is supposed to be a good Briggs engine. I''d like to have the Mulchmaster as a domestic mower
@@alanbstard4 Owned a Mulchmaster 560 for ten years now. The Briggs and Stratton 8.50 is a bullet proof motor with more torque than the GXV Honda. The Mulchmater is a solid mower but the GT sourced gearboxes are a disaster. If Victa could fit a durable gearbox these would be first class machines. Until then I'd spend the extra money and go the 21" Honda.
Hey Brenton, awesome review !! Ive just bought the same mower nice piece of kit, have you been able to source a snorkel kit, ive been looking and cant find one, the store i purchased it from told me they don't make one for that model. Please let me know if you source one. Have a Good Weekend !!
It was unfortunately discontinued due to "emissions requirements " there is an after market kit but Ive not done too much more about it tbh, If I do ill do an update in a vid. You will love the Honda
Actually, it's not as easy to re/start as my old HRU194 when cold. I have to use the choke the first half a dozen times. Maybe because it's still not run-in and it runs lean, to reduce the consumption and emissions? . If the cord is hard to pull, then U either haven't pulled the engine brake handle or U have some wet grass stuck on the blades or maybe even something under them, of course! . The inside of my front right wheel is full of grass, clippings, unlike the left, which tells me that it spits out more to that side, of course, the chute outlet being on that side, so keep that side away from the paths and windows, if U can, even though I find it easier to turn to the left/anticlockwise.
Hey mate, Have you spoken to your dealer about the hard to start issue? There might be something a miss with your machine, You will find most mowers front right wheel cops more grass etc than the front left but Ive not experienced to the degree you have mentioned. Not sure whats happening with yours unfortunately. Do you like the mower or not so much?
@@theaussielawn Thanks, mite. Will do. Oh, I still love it. Well, it is a bit colder down here, and I'm cool. Oh, I understand why the front right gets clogged up inside, because of the direction of rotation. It's not a real problem. Just a nuisance, when U have to clean/wash it. I wish they would make that wheel solid on the inside.
I like this one over the Honda I have, I drop mine to the lowest setting and can't even scalp my kikuyu, then again I think mine was 699. Still a great mower
@@theaussielawn yes the two blade. I got tall fescue initially so wanted the ability to cut it longer. That was a failed experiment, I'd only recommend it for people in Tassie
@@5wisher5weet I think it would be ok for taller buff too. I actually like how my toro super recycler mows my buffalo but I prefer to keep it circa tall fescue heights
Dan, give the Rover pro cut 720 a look, it's a nice mower too. I still have the older pro cut 50 pushie and it's bullet proof plus does a damn nice cut and the kholer engine is brilliant, as good as the honda and after three years still starts first pull with power to spare.
When I changed my first oil after just some 10-20 hrs, it was black!? I wish the plastic air filter cover nuts were sealed, so the bolts wouldn't catch on fruit tree bird nets.
@@theaussielawn Yes it's normal, for some reason. I just watched a video of a guy who ran a brand new Honda GXV for 24 fours, the last 20 with no load, and when he changed the oil it was black!?, as was the oil from 3 other engines. Maybe because they run hot, and were not run in, of course.
G'day Brenton, appreciate the informative review. Decided to spend a bit more on one of these over the American variant HRN216. Have you had any dramas with the air filter down low? And how often do you typically clean the filter? I've got a few patches in the yard with limited coverage which can get a bit dusty when mowing.
I personally prefer engine brake , there are more things going on under the deck with blade brake such as bearings that sill need occasional replacement (I know this because my toro super recycler the blade brake system .
Finally a man who talks clear and is a great honest chat like he is talking to you only
Keep up the good work
Cheers Jeff I appreciate you taking time to post your message of support 🤙😎
I bought one of these mowers back in 2010 (HRU196D), honestly the best investment I have made, after using it daily with my mowing biz since then it has never skiped a beat, the honda powerplant is bulletproof, highly recommended.
100% mate I cant speak highly enough about them either
I just want to add that for anyone who hasn't tried the blade clutch version, you really don't know what you are missing. It is the best invention since sliced bread in my opinion, once you have one guarantee you won't look back. It makes the mower so much more versatile and user friendly, plus you don't have to start it 500 times every mow. It is actually a feature Honda have taken from their high-end commercial mowers (early 2000s era) and brought to the buffalo series. I was skeptical at first, but since owning one I wouldn't consider anything else, the benefits are phenomenal.
Good to hear you are super happy with the blade brake version mate
Why do you shut it down when mowing? Have never shut a mower down to empty it.
@@jimmydcricket5893 Unfortunately all new mowers are required to have a dead man switch to meet safety regulations!
Had my Honda Buffalo since 1997 mate. Has never missed a beat. Still has years left in the old girl. Great vid bud👍
Such a familiar story mate. That’s why I crowned it the best push mower. So easy to start and cuts beautifully , glad they re released this series again 🤘
Hello from The States (Kentucky) 🖐
Bought my first Honda mower in 1999...it's a self propelled 3 in 1, (discharge, mulching, bagging) unit w/ a 6hp motor & still to this day it's a one pull start everytime !
@@marklloyd4153 it’s a shame you don’t get this range over there. But I think they would cut too low for American tastes
@@theaussielawn yes . I cut my St Augustine grass with wide blades of grass at 4 inches
Quick spray of the fasteners with CRC soft seal (because I do these things)
One Gentle pull and she was going... , idling like a sleeping kitten....
Warm her up... Get it to speed, do a few test height cuts dialed my height in and OMFG ! This just works ! Honestly is the most solid mower I have used (feels a little heavy but hey... I will get stronger)
The biggest issue with my lawn is clogging.
Yeah I like them !
They are really good machines hey Id be lost with out mine

Ill have to have closer look at mine now you mention that
Normally not one to endorse products, but can definitely say and agree this is genuinely the best push mower you can buy. I’ve tried them all over the years and have come back to this one. The previous model with the closed chute wasn’t much chop, I’m so glad they’ve come back to the open rear design, has a hand throttle, and the proper hard plastic catcher
Yeah me too mate, the old man has the half chute one he don't like it much either. Great to see Honda listened to its customer feedback I reckon
21 years on mine. Bullet proof

Well done Brenton you can't go wrong with Honda, I have HRU197D still going strong starts first pull every time.
Thanks Paul I reckon it will continue to start first go for you for many more years to come too
I learned/t something new toduy:
Keep Ur mower away from low branches, coz they can pull on the starter cord, which will engage the starter,
and U will hear a scraping metallic noise, coming from it!
I'm glad I still have my HRU194, which has the pull handle down on the engine, cover.
Thanks for the heads up

The rear Shute has now changed snd the throat is smaller?? And your opinion on bags and not a hard incased catcher. Guy at the store was really pushing that bag is better you just need airflow. Cheers 👍
Hi mate I'm assuming you are based here in AUS? The HRU19 & HRU!96 series has a full open rear shute. I've never experienced any cracking around the wheels on the alloy base decks nor have I heard of it before now. I wonder if he was pushing the bag models because the plastic catcher range are very popular and harder to get atm. (It's worth noting the self drive HRU 21" has a smaller shute and a bag and although a good machine can experience some clogging comparing to the HRU19 and HRU196 series
my hru196 is vibrating but i do not no why?
The first thing id be looking at is either damage to the blades or incorrectly installed blades. If your not mechanically minded I would take it to your mower mechanic to be inspected ASAP
I went for the blade brake model just for the fact you're not re-starting the machine everytime you clear the catcher. Horses for courses though.
Can you let me know what lawn mower was used to get the grass on the golf course green looking so good thanks?
Hi Sam I mow my green with a toro greensmaster 1000
their the best commercial mowers the hru196's, I picked one up used for $400 the guy was a landscaper and he said they will do 20,000 hours no problem. The only problem I have found how heavy they are, not the easiest mower to push up a hill.
Pyra I agree they are weighty mowers mate. I just call it heavy cardio 😂
The Aussie Lawn yeah just keep thinking the heavier the stronger it is 😂
wow that was a very interesting video of that honda mower, I might invest in one next week after watching this. thankyou
Thanks mate
I was also eyeing out the smaller 18” Milwaukee as I already have the batteries but now sure if self propelled is a good thing for a lawn like mine
Hi mate thanks for the message it's important to know that the Australian Assembled mowers (HRU series) are not being discounted, Its the American Hondas that are on the chopping block.
Did you end up getting the snorkel kit as I am also interested?

Na mate thats how it came
I had a Honda HRB 476 C in the UK. A great self propelled mower with roller. I can't seem to find them or an alternative in Aus.

I’m sure you will love it
Had 196 with blade clutch around 10 years ago when i just started doing lawnmowing business ,unforturnatelly due to the heavy weight i had to give up and bought a 216 for self propell feature. 196 for sure is a solid build mower but i really wonder who would buy it,for most people(contractor or homeowner) it is just too heavy to push around.

Just a Q on the Hru196, is it still as good as 2 years ago when you done your review. Thanks
Yeah mate It is, Its heavy yes but its dependable.
Can you tell me what the letter U stands for in HRU196?
HI, thanks for the great video. I watched your review of the Toro 60v battery mower and I'm almost sold on it,
but curious how much lower this Honda will cut than the Toro,
also which will handle long thick grass the best.
I potentially wouldnt suggest the toro for couch grass owners due to HOC not going low enough, but thats like all American mowers
heya mate. great video. what do you think of the hrn and hrx models self propelled models?
If you are mowing taller especially cool season turf or buffalo / kikuyu / carpet grass etc great! But if you need to mow couch or scalp not ideal
Four blades gives a cleaner cut IMO so stick with it mate.
And why did they flip the direction of the Fuel Valve!?
And they don't actually show/tell U which is which! Unlike on the HRU194.

Hi Zac, absolutely mate 💯 great choice for commercial use. They are heavy mowers compared to lesser products but I’m use to it
do you still prefer it over the newer HRX 217 with 200 cc engines and other features ?
Yeah I do mate, The HRX is great for cool season turf, Kikuyu, buffalo etc. But it dont go low enough for couch and isn't a good choice for scalp renovations.

I still love mine Im sure you will too, they are heavier than other mowers to push but they are well built
I've noticed it's a bit heavier which I don't think is an issue and I took it for a quick 10 min spin when i got home. Feels solid. Do you get tempted to velcro the handle?
They are heavier thats right but as you say very sturdy. I may or may not have some electrical tape strategically placed from time to time 😉
Any thoughts on the HRN vs HRU for tall fescue? Im not sure what is better, the twin blade or the quad blade...
@@theaussielawn Thank you! Love your content, and the green is looking pretty sweet!
Whens the buffalo reno happening mate? Loved the vid
I was going to start it this week but Ive decided to wait a tiny bit longer till Ben Sims comes over and we will add it to our joint vid
@@theaussielawn mate that would be great if you could enjoy your Sunday 👍
I might even down the track to a catching comparison vid
Cheers Brenton
Nice review.. How do you compare buffalo pro with a toro timemaster 30 inch?
Hmmm very different mowers, if your cutting couch Id lean toward the honda. If your mowing longer cut lawns over 25mm and time is money then id say the toro
@@theaussielawn Thank you for the comments. Mine is couch and I prefer to cut low. Even though I would have loved a 30" honda
Great review mate, i will be definitely going out and buying one to replace my Victa.
You will love it mate 🤙

hahaha sorry ... not sorry 😂
Hi mate, any tips on a rotary mower for couch? I don’t have a cylinder and want a rotary which will get low enough!
Gday mate this Honda really is a great option and my pick of the rotary mowers for day in day out mowing. It does only go down to 16mm but you will get a nice cut from it on the second lowest or 3rd lowest setting and save the lowest setting for the annual scalp 🤘
@@theaussielawn legend thanks mate! I was thinking I’d need to go lower than 16mm for couch!
Carby could do with a clean, it only starts second pull from cold now 😁
If only the Loncin knockoff of a Honda GX120 on my Rover was as easy to start.
@@philrichmond5919 100% mate Im happy to pay a little more IF I'm getting REAL quality and durability
When did U change Ur first oil?
From memory after about 10ish hrs of use
@@theaussielawn Thanks, mite.
Hi I'm looking to buy a new mower and I've seen this Honda HRU194 for sale on a used sales site
Is that model good like this?
Yes it is mate

My pleasure Patrick if you do decide to go with a Honda HRU I would love to hear your thoughts on it cheers Brenton 🤙
I wish they took the time in the factories to get all the stickers lined up properly. Really gets my OCD when you see that on a $900+ mower.
I was exactly the same!!! I thought wow how hard is it to put a sticker on straight haha
@@theaussielawn For really bad sticker alignment, check out your local tool shop for the bench vices made by Dawn (in China).
@@AdamAus85 haha copy 🤙
So do you have to restart it every single time you empty the catcher, pick up a stick etc?
Technically yes unless u go with the blade brake version . But off the record I may or may not use a bit of tie wire around the handle bar and slide it off when finished mowing 🤫
@@theaussielawn haha nice. I’d get the version up with the clutch but they don’t bring it into NZ!
I had to remove the flap off my toro as it did exactly what your saying 🤙
did you get the part number of the snorkel kit and cost?
I didn't end up proceeding with the kit mate, It was discontinued due to "emission laws" Yes you can order the parts individually but I just couldn't be bothered in the end even though some awesome viewers actually listed all the individual part numbers for the bits.
Last question mate haha, do these come standard with that rear rubber safety flap thing? and Will it strip rye ? haha
Lol yeah it’s standard it will SORTA stripe rye BUT the wheels will stripe more so it would look crappy I reckon 😉

Thanks for the advise as I'm buying one next week.
no worries, you will love it they are a great machine
Sorry to ask a really dumb question but can you lock the dead man bar in place so the mower doesnt turn off everytime i empty the catcher? I have the hru19 domestic version. Ive read the manual over n over but cant see any info. Again sorry for the dumb question.
No its definitely not a dumb question the short answer is no, As it's a safety device designed to cut the mower when you let go of the handle bars, However a creative person may come up with a way to override the system if you preferred a more traditional mowing experience haha
@@theaussielawn hahaha ok ill come up with something…thanks heaps mate
@@chooka83 like a bit of wire lol
Nice but don’t like the bar at the top you have to hold. If you need to take your hands off the handle you don’t necessarily want the engine stopping. Unfortunately it seems all mowers these days have that.
Bull clip or cable sorts that out mate. I have a bit of wire on mine
The green looks awesome
Thanks mate
Hey mate, just wondering if you had the part number for the snorkel kit as i would love to order one for mine? 👍👍
Unfortunately its been discontinued due to emissions laws apparently. But somewhere in this thread there is a fella who has listed the individual part numbers so technically you could order all that stuff and end up with a "snorkel kit"

Yup I love them too mate
Hey mate, great review. Are you still happy with this mower 1 year on?

Hey guys, just looking into snorkel kits & found this. Hope it helps! GENUINE VICTA HONDA SNORKEL KIT AF07881A
I couldn't agree more ,best on the market
humble genius definitely a great mower 🤘
Sounds like you have one of the ones that have the bar blade and are assembled in America
@@theaussielawn yes the two blade. I got tall fescue initially so wanted the ability to cut it longer. That was a failed experiment, I'd only recommend it for people in Tassie

When I changed my first oil after just some 10-20 hrs, it was black!?
I wish the plastic air filter cover nuts were sealed, so the bolts wouldn't catch on fruit tree bird nets.
I cant remember if mine was really black or not now. Yeah those nuts on the air filter would be a pain in that situation.
