Scalping / renovating / rejuvenating a NEGLECTED Sir Walter buffalo (St Augustine grass) lawn

  • I've been itching to attack this buffalo lawn and breathe some new life into it for sometime now, Today is the day.
    There is a lot of opinions on scalping / shaving buffalo lawns some for it and some against it. As you will see in this video providing you have stolons (runners) still showing you will be ok but if you are left with nothing but dirt your in trouble. Top dressing buffalo isn't paramount unless your trying to correct surface levels but remember not to burry your stolons (surface runners) too deep or they won't survive.

    I've had Sir Walter for about 30-35 years. I never scalp below the 4th notch on a Victa mainly because lower scalping tends to encourage weeds and if you get a couple of hot days it burns the roots. I start at 6th notch (normal) and drop it one notch for two fortnights (September- early October) With the lawn in the video I would have given it a light topdressing just to even out the hills and hollows - most landscaping places have a suitable topdressing with the correct fertiliser mixed in. BTW - just as an aside - most people I see keep their buffalo lawns too short. Should be on about 6th notch on a Victa. BTW2 I find the agricultural fertilisers the best for Sir Walter (eg Aftergraze) Great video.

      I increased mine to notch 7 on the makita elec which I believe is about 57mm and my lawn over last summer got very spongy, so think this summer will stick to 5 or 6. Currently in the process of decreasing it for reno where I am currently at notch 5 (44-45mm) and it feels a lot better underfoot. Probably take your advice and just go to notch 4 (38mm), then aerate, fert and top dress. I got some bad super valleys in my front lawn due to postman driving their bike over it.

    I am from Nth Qld in my younger years, and if buffalo was not cut with catcher twice a week in the growing season (late August through to late May) then thatching was a big problem - particularly if no catcher was used. My lawn care business moved to solely buffalo renovation over a few years. Not many people knew how to "rescue" a dying lawn caused by infrequent mowing and/or improper height adjustment and not using a catcher. I built a purpose built scalping mower from a Masport after the 3.5hp B&S motor gave up. Mounted an 8hp Honda ride on motor on the B&S base, and doubled the wheel width by bolting and siliconing a second set of wheels onto the existing wheels. Meant I couldn't cut close to edges, but with some practice, I cleaned up edges with whipper snipper. The 8hp Honda on a 20" (from memory) deck meant I could scalp a renovation at normal walking/mowing speed. The wider wheels easily offset the increased weight to stop the mower sinking into the thatch. I could take up to 3 wool bale bags of clippings from one lawn - which I took home and composted, which took about a year to ensure weed seeds were killed (hot composting). Fortunately I owned acreage, so had enough room to conduct this composting operation. That way I was able to charge for the renovation, charge for removing clippings (council dumps made commercial lawn mowing businesses pay to dump, even then), and sell the compost. A renovation consisted of scalping (could take a whole day for a big yard) and weekly followups for six weeks with light training trims where necessary. I made a very good income with only two to three jobs per week, and always had a waiting list.

      Yeah it will mate providing there is some viable stolons there it will come back. You shouldn’t have to do such and aggressive scalp every year on buffalo but when it gets as bad as this one was you just need to hook in

    Just came across your videos and channel.
    My family and I bought a house several weeks ago and I finally learnt today that our grass is buffalo (after trying to search online trying to identify it).
    The front lawn is so spongey it is not funny and definitely needs something done, but perhaps next year. The runners are so crossed over and there is so much dead thatch. I am just learning about lawn care now, so this video is very helpful!
    Perhaps next year I will have to do the same thing. Thanks very much. You got my subscription. Keeping an eye out for a Victa 460 now too :-)
    PS. such a coincidence. I watched your entire 'Deep Dive into Sapphire Buffalo grass / St Augustine Grass' video and the neglected buffalo lawn, checked your videos and this one was posted today! Great timing.

    I want to watch this yard as you go. I just watched the Nov 3 update before this one, so I was a little prepared for what you did. v8soarer1991 was right about us Yanks having a heart attack. Up here my standard saying is 'there is never a time when you need to mow St Augustine lower than the highest setting on the deck.' But the yard you started with was exceptional. The turf was floating on top of the soil. For a reno like this, I see the point of scalping. At this point I would apply corn meal or alfalfa pellets (rabbit chow) at 7 kilo per 100 square meters, deep water (2.5 cm all at one time) and repeat the water in 2 weeks. Also I don't spend any money on water penetration products. I use baby shampoo at 50 ml per 100 square meters. Works amazingly well - one app lasts for years with normal watering.

    • @theaussielawn
      @theaussielawn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait till you see tomorrow's video haha Its a similar video but this time on my own St Aug. haha 😜 Wow baby shampoo you say might have a little experiment with it some time

    • @dchall8
      @dchall8 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@theaussielawn Any clear shampoo will work. The cloudy shampoos have oils in them which are not helpful. You cannot over apply - people here have tried. Do a screwdriver test before you spray and then after. One of the guys testing the over application had a tree limb fall and sink 3/4 of a meter into his yard. Screwdriver test is easier ;-)

    One thing that was not mentioned in the video ...........
    because you are reel low and there would be a lot of bare dirt patches , what would you do to stop weeds growing wild in between ?
    Do you wait for weeds to show than treat or spray with some kind of pre emergent after scalping?

In this particular situation I'm not overly concerned about weed invasion but will keep a little eye on the bare edges as they will stay bare for longer. I’m wondering what model Honda you use because I have Honda model HRR216 and the lowest setting I can get it to is 28mm so I can’t scalp my lawn with the Honda. It seems to be a thing with Honda that all the their self propelled models (that I’ve seen on line) have very high low setting if that makes any sense. I would also like to know if there is such a thing as Buffalo lawn seed and if so where can I get it. I have a Palmetto lawn and would like to do some over seeding

  • @richardportelli1983
