SHOWDOWN - TRX4M VS SCX24 - Battle for the Mini RC Crawler Crown!

  • The EPIC showdown! Traxxas TRX4M versus Axial SCX24! In this video I compare these to mini crawlers visually, by their key features, and in a number of performance tests. I grabbed a brand new SCX24 Bronco for the test so that we could have a bronco to bronco comparison. The goal is to provide objective information so that you can make an informed decision on your first mini crawler purchase or your next purchase. Or perhaps you're just curious how these two stack up against each other. In any case, I hope this entertains and educates. It sure was fun to make! Enjoy!

      Traxxas doesn't have a warranty. This was unfair because of the size difference. This test should have never taken place.

      @@JasonGunn418 I admit it is not a level playing field because of the size difference. But there are lots of people out there who want to know how the Traxxas compares to the Axial. So its more of a demonstration of the two and a comparison.

      @@CapeCrawlers I would always go with Axial, because they just have better electronics. They also honor their product. I have a lot of Traxxas crawlers, but with Axial electronics installed. I usually junk Traxxas marked items, with the exception if Castle made it.

    It's really hard to compare these great trucks because of scale differences alone. That said, I own both and I love both. But I've done upgrades to both. I've noticed performance improvements on both trucks. I started with the SCX24 jeep and ended up converting it to the Bronco hard body. And I added brass parts to make it less top heavy. The TRX 4M I've changed bushings to bearings and the gears. It runs much smoother now. But I'll probably add weights to it too. I like them both.

    Been 20 years since I've been in R/C cars. I just bought a red SCX24 Bronco, waiting for it to be shipped in. The biggest selling points for me are the tiny size and the aftermarket for the Axial. The Traxxas looked impressive, but the Axial will be amazing crawling over my office desk, LOL.

    • @CapeCrawlers
      @CapeCrawlers  ปีที่แล้ว

      I totally understand that. I love being able to challenge the truck with little to no space. And the aftermarket is sooooo deep for the scx24.

  • @havikhobbies
    @havikhobbies ปีที่แล้ว +33

    Yeah the little scx24 can't run same lines but that's half the fun! Back when I spent time wheeling real trucks I owned two Suzuki's. I had a hard top Sierra (Samurai) lifted on 31's and a Grand Vitara lifted on 30's. Those little trucks would go anywhere the big Land Cruisers and Patrols would go and then some! But you weren't running the same line's, you have to exploit the strengths of the vehicle your driving without exposing too many of its weaknesses!

    • @CapeCrawlers
      @CapeCrawlers  ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Great point. The narrow stance and shorter wheelbase of the scx24 can be a real advantage just as they would in the real world

      …and who wants to be stuck in one scale of RC? Don’t they say variety is the spice? This was a brilliant video - I love your even pacing and detailed delivery. It's no surprise your channel is growing so quickly, you're just killing it. Love your work, keep it up!
    Quick note on batteries: 12:04 re TRX-4m battery: the plug is the balance lead. It's a 2S battery and there are three cables on the battery lead. That's Ground and +ve for cells 1 and 2 = balance! I haven't tested this yet and this is the first video I've watched about the TRX-4m (they're still not in Australia yet, but hopefully they will be soon!!). I've gotta think you could replace any 2S lipo battery's balance plug with this Traxxas 3-pin adapter and you'd be sorted. Shouldn't be too hard to make an adapter, for that matter.

    The only problem with the trx4m is the throttle control and slow crawl is absolutely garbage right out of the box. You’ve really got to change with gear if you want the slow crawl . However the SCX24 has amazing slow crawl out of the box, which allows you to start upgrading right away.

    Thank you for taking the time to do this comparison. I honestly don't think you could go wrong with either one. As a full scale off roader I think it's like a Samurai vs Jeep test. They both have ups and downs, depending on what you are looking for. Sometimes the longer wheelbase and larger size is a benefit, sometimes smaller is better.
    I'm leaning towards one of the 1/24 rigs because it will mostly be an indoor crawler for the winter or bad weather. The slightly smaller size will make it easier to build a course in our limited space. Plus, at this time, there is a lot more available in the aftermarket for the scx24.
    Maybe a trx4m will be a good next addition after we get a couple 1/24 crawlers.

    As someone who has no experience I would prefer the TRX4M out of the box - simply based on how it drives. I am well aware that one can get way more upgrades for the SCX24 as of today, but that will soon be the case for the Traxxas as well and it will probably be easy with either too spend $200 for additional parts. I hope to see more versions in the future - I would love some pickup truck version.

    theres no denying the trx4m's value for its price but i think a really important point to consider is where the truck will be driven, since the scx24 is smaller, its far easier to drive indoors than the trx4m. the scx24 can also be found onsale for $120 which is 30 less than the trx4m. eitherway both are great for what they are.

    The SCX24 Bronco is awesome, and also was the first. Out of the box, the only drawback is that it's a little bouncy, so you'll need to get more firm shocks and install them. Other than that, the SCX24 is beyond awesome. I have two of them, and I absolutely love them both!

    Ya your right you definitely can’t compare the 2 but it’s interesting to see the difference in performance. The SCX just has no chance to outperform it. Maybe if it was highly modified but the M is still a better deal for the money. The Traxxas is a great value in my eyes because it’s able to drive in the same small spaces as the axial but performs so well while doing so. With ~$150 the axial could hang I think. But then if you put that same amount into the Traxxas, you’d widen that gap again. It will be fun to build out the traxxas and see what’s it’s capable of!

    That little tiny size difference did make it unable to play on my indoor and my desk obstacle so when spring comes and I can go outside I'll be picking up a TRX 4m no I doubt ..

      This was a tough conclusion on my part!! I would hate to be in a position to choose between the two. The customization of the scx24 is that X factor that makes it incredibly fun and enjoyable to own. Plus the axial platform responds so well to mods. The chassis and servo design of the traxxas will never allow it to perform like the scx24 can with upgrades.

      I have my eye on the 4M Defender now. I already have the SCX24 Bronco but exactly as you say, I have already spent like 80 bucks for various basic upgrades to lower the center of gravity and give it better clearance and I've managed add only 70 grams to the bottom (anything more will require a stronger servo I think). I bought it two months before I learnt that the 4M had come out. If I'd known that I would have gone for the Traxxas probably, as basically for the cost of the Bronco + the worth of a few upgrades you'll still get a better car straight out of the box. Even though my Bronco is much better than stock now, you still run into problems especially when side hilling. The cost of a nice hard body I guess. But I like it anyway, it was my first crawler.

    Great comparison so long as the focus is on "sub $200 mini crawlers". As you mentioned, the scale difference between the two leads to a not fair comparison when driving. But when you look at what you get bone stock in the price range, the Traxxas is a way better value - stock for stock. But, when you factor in the controllers, the Axial wins as Traxxas missed including some basic settings in the minimalist controller. I wouldn't rule out getting a TRX4M, but there's so much going on in the "mini" space right now, and such a strong aftermarket for the Axials that I don't know that it's top on my list. Traxxas' proprietary ways make me want to stay away from them. Stuff like their unique battery connectors and stuff like that which kind of force you into purchasing solely from them at typically premium prices is pretty lame to me. So that kind of turns me off. Just my thoughts...At any rate, this was a great vid showcasing the pros and cons of both rigs.
