Formal Seisan Bunkai - Uechi Ryu Okikukai Dan Test

- Here is my portion of the Okinawan Karate-do Association's formal Seisan Bunkai. It's a requirement for first, second, and third degree black belt. I make a couple mistakes, and I save tge biggest for the end. If it weren't for my great partner being "on it," I probably would have had to repeat the exercise. I went too deep into kata muscle memory and forgot to end the demonstration portion at the correct segment right before the Seisan jump back.
Bio: Andrew O'Brien is a traditional martial arts enthusiast trapped in Boston. He is growing more and more allergic to all bullsh*t but his own. Andrew's experience runs the gamut of contexts across multiple styles, and he has trained with world renowned martial artists and leaders in the self defense field. In addition to being a career martial artist, Andrew is an educator in academic, martial, and life coaching contexts. In pursuit of martial excellence, Andrew has dragged his family into weirder and weirder health practices like dieting for health, turning off indoor lights after dark, and watching the sunrise every morning. On his channel, he posts videos to take your martial arts and health to the next level!

Respect for being able to hold those postures & hand positions great reflexes. This is why these styles are not only martial arts but art forms.
If a Karate practitioner hits you, like this with the oi zuki snapping straight punch your going to know about it 🤜🤛
Thank you for the kind words, sir!
@@andrewobrienkarate That’s quite alright Andrew, credit where credit is due.
Well done 🤜🤛
Thank you , very helpful in my Seisan Bunkai study.
Excellent 👌. Thank you for sharing 🙏
Thanks for watching and thanks for the kind words! 😁🙏
I love the combination of the form and the bunkai.
Thanks! It's the formal presentation, so that's how our organization requires it for testing.
Agreed. Great way to present the kata and application.
Kids. This is a good way of staying active and good exercise. Don’t do this on the street or you will get your ass kicked.
Yup.
Modified for fighting in castle corridors
Ce bunkai est vraiment beau,et reflète la réalité du combat
Merci Beaucoup! 😁
So precise movements, like on rails, impressive.
Thank you very much! 😁
Nice. Looking good
Thank you! 😁
I like Uechi-ryu kata, but sadly let down by the bunkai here which is desperately attempting to fit crude self defence to something that obviously has more depth. An analogy would be like watching someone using a paint brush to poke someone in the eye or an adjustable spanner to hammer nails. You have to go back pre 1644 to get even a glimpse of what these ancient kata were for.
Agreed. This is a requirement for the organization we're part of. I don't think it's good Bunkai or useful for self defense. It's the simplest possible explanation for kata movement applied at sparring range. So we have something that wouldn't work well for any range unless the partner plays along. I've played with interpreting the jump back sequence here.

Awesome! :)
Uke te did a good job, despite a slight oops 😊
Haha! Thank you very much! 😁
un bon travail
Merci beaucoup! 😁
Impressive, 5th dan grading?
Thank you! Nah, just 3rd. I'm a little Uechi baby. 😁
This is a kind of robot dance.
Sort of, yeah.
Это каты ,а где реальный спарринг
Так же без которых беспомощен
Nice dance moves.
Thanks!
Très beau
Merci!
😊😊😊
What is the practical application for the Seisan jump?
Great question! I've been thinking on an off about this. I'll tag you when I make a video!
@@andrewobrienkarate I think it would be an excellent video. No one’s ever made one on TH-cam.
@TimelessWarriors Wow! Thanks for the tip. I'll try to make it tomorrow so mine can be the first! Thanks, again! 😁🙏

Possibly evading a leg kick or a sweep and countering after
Uhhhh, WTH???
You'll have to be more specific.
Ballett. 😂
I honestly think this is a waste of time
I agree, actually.
Wait till you have an encounter with a trained fighter
@jorrisaddy6769 are you advocating for the exercise in the video or are you agreeing with the commenters?
@@jorrisaddy6769 trained in actual fighting or this pretend stuff?
Pointless prearranged defense against a prearranged attack doesnt prove anything. A boxer with six months training would take them apart.
You're preaching to the choir, dude.
Pointless and arrogant remark on your part.
Why bother with shit like that. You do your stuff and let other people do theirs.
depens gloves or not as here eye poking and throat poking is allowed
Very impressive dynamic style
So many unnecessary movements
I'm the performer and I agree. It's a requirement for testing, not something I'd hold up as useful for self defense or fighting.
Try to be open-minded, and you might learn something. Bruce Lee was open-minded enough to learn western boxing and incorporate in his fighting system.
Shut it
@@andrewobrienkarateI see the work you have put into this, hours into years.
Dedication flows like water, it was good to watch a few moments of a lifetime of passion.
Good luck.
is this karate or what.........?
Uechi Ryu Karate, yes.
Bunkai for the kata seisan
Very old school non-competitive karate
Gymnastic
It looks so ridicilious and rehearsed
