Thank you for watching this video. This Japanese Karate grand master began practicing several kinds of Budo (martial arts) at age 6 and has 60 years of Budo experience. Through this experience, he has created this Makiwara practice video. Please do not imitate this exercise if you are an amateur or a beginner and not to be used to Makiwara practice. If you have a Sensei, please follow his advice. Thank you for your understanding.
I used a board maki from about 1975 to 2015 .( I still have it bolted to the floor in my garage .Its Japanese willow wood. I hit it every day 120 times .fist / knife hand / palm. I was the only one at my dojo who used one.Not many could block my punches.
True about the knuckles I fractured my pinky knuckle when I was fighting I have been trained in boxing and takwondo and karate my age 70yr old I still do bare knuckles planks on a wooden floor this is good advice Alec from Scotland
Beautiful this man takes karate and martial arts in general seriously unlike my ex-Karate instructor from Augusta, Georgia. I wish I can study under this karate master his technique is beautiful.
I love the fact, that you show us your most beloved walls that you like to hit the most. It certainly helps if you find a place that you actually like to hit, I guess. 🤔🙂 Anyhow, a simple explanation but an impressive achievement. 👍
Your walls must be concrete. I once put my palm through my plaster-board wall just by palm slapping it. If somebody tries punching a plaster wall they will be repairing a hole.
My respects for this master's discipline, is amazing how is able to strike this kind of surfaces. However, ancient masters beware against this kind of training because the long term consequences: back and brain damage, also, old chinese masters relates striking static surfaces with damage to lungs. The reason behind use surfaces with some give up is because part of the countershok force is disipated and not get back to karateca, also trains explosive punch and features like shime ans shibori and lastly but not less importante trains the capacity to avoid arm hyperextension in case of missing a punch. The famous iron hand sacs formely were stacked on a leather chair instead of a wood table in order to get some give up. Just my 2 cents. Please, master, keep sharing more videos oooosssu
I was raised on boxing, forced training since I can remember. I always loved to hit the heavy bag bare fist. It used to tear up my hands, but now they are super callused from over there years. Needless to say but I will, once I was in my 20's I was at a party got drunk , put my hand through a stucco wall.. Train yourself gentlemen, it may save your life or your families life one day. When I was young I hated training, putting on the gloves and sparring with my dad. But now I'm very thankful and I absolutely love the full contact sports. What boxing taught me besides being Lethal with my hands is discipline. It's about knowing you can do something but reframe from malicious acts and provide protection for your family.
You can do this exercise but the idea si not to hurt your hand .It should be done step by step and i recommend using ointment after practicing and taking care not to hurt your hands you should wrap your hands with serious boxing bandage for better safety
Good video, I use to hit walls like that, destroyed two schools, and brick walls won’t last at all. So I started to use trees, they last a little longer.
Twas a green belt and I just tested. I observed some kids hitting the makiwara we had on the concrete block wall. I told them to hit it hard! I stood in front of the makiwara in a horse stance and hit it three times. Right, left, right. Broke my hand. To this day I have a raised part on the top of my hand where I broke it. Should have used a front stance to absorb the impact to my body. If the makiwara was in the ground as we later had one put in, the force would be more concentrated on the knuckles. My instructor is old school Korean. he told us they would use a razorblade on their knuckles......................................................He told us when he went to school he would hold his hand over his knuckles to hide his developed knuckles.
Most respect to you. Love the dedication. I couldn't help but as a green belt in Shotokan and black belt in Tang Soo Do, mostly first place in competitions in 1992-93, in different categories, as well second and third spot ( all in my prime), and with an eye for competition, I did noticed only the right hand is used in your video. I looked the best I could on this video and noticed that left fist didn't get the same training. Am I wrong ?
I always teach a makiwara should be flexible (for a number of reasons)... and do not hit needle like surfaces which will give callous on knuckles, without doing the purpose of makiwara training.. In fact, I am not a grantmaster :D and everyone has a different opinion.. Interesting video. Thanks for sharing.
I watch this video and I'm very worried about the doors. everything starts beautifully (makiwara) and ends with doors and everything wooden in the building. maybe it's better to hang a makiwara on the door right away. yes about chains. instead of a belt, can you dye the chains black to tie them on a kimono? in my opinion, the chain should be thicker both on the arms and on the neck too (red). write on kimono - Panasonic (made in Japan)
GrandMaster Frank Van Lenten 10th degree black belt in Goshin Goju-Ryu Karate Do said if you have callous on your knuckles, your hands aren't conditioned properly. He said the power is internal. His hands had no calluses.
Karate uses also one finger strikes, such as ippon ken or nakadaka-ippon ken. By the way... Isn´t Ikken hissatsu furtherly more of a principle (implemented through the japanese, in okinawan karate no such term or need for it exists) instead of a basis of a technique?
Which way is the arm coming at you with the knife? Is it a thrust? A slash? What? There is no instant kill kata for a dude with a knife. (Keep in mind most dudes with knives are f*d up on narcotics and a alot un predictable) You have to be versed in all forms of attack-defense. You have to know them. Then if the time comes you'll find out if you studied well enough or if you just liked the idea of martial arts (and end up dead or worse - paralysis)
the best martial art all the time is real temple shaolin kung fu....their body very strong, fast and deadly...but not for fight show or competition....

i dont wish to damage my hands to this extend.
I'm more scared than ever because maybe my house will collapse because of this
I don't have a makiwara so I use a brick wall as one.
what do the chains around the waist do?? Make your hip twist stronger because you fight its momentum??

Ohaiyo gozaimashu Sensei. Arigato for your video. I am your new subscriber. I am a silat practitioner and I am also interested in Karate and Iaido.
If I had such a neighbor, I would have to wake up when he starts training.
Domo Arigato gozaimashita
He claims all karate only punch with first two knuckles.
But okinawan iishin ryu karate and Japanese shorinji kempo use vertical fist

What is it worn for and how much does it weigh, the chain that is around the waist
Great teacher
I wonder how your knuckles will hold up into your late golden years?
do the chains make your koshi o hineru stronger?
why the chain?

If you want to fight with one hand, then you kon‘t need to practise the other hand!

If you have deformation and permanent swelling in the hand, that is not proper training.
