- Shai Hai takes his 6th-dan black belt grading in Uechi-ryu Karate at the Kiyohide Shinjo Dojo in Yomitan, Okinawa.
Examiners were Kiyohide Shinjo, Narihiro Shinjo, and Yoshimitsu Matsusaki all icons of Okinawan Karate.
In Uechi-ryu karate, for 6th-dan there is no kumite component, but Shai Hai had to perform the three key kata of the style.
After the grading I had the opportunity to chat with Kiyohide Shinjo about Series Three of SENSEI: Masters of Okinawan Karate. I'm excited about the possibility of interviewing Shinjo Sensei later this year.

Muchas felicitaciones... Excelente examen, increíble historia, maravilloso vídeo. Oss, Sensei! 🙇🏽♂️
Nice inspiring story. I do Wado Kai and hope to train Japan a bit in a couple of years. 😊
Thank you for sharing.
Congratulations and thanks for sharing your story.💪👏👏👏
Testing for your 6th dan in uechi Ryu (or any belt before and afterwards) is obviously not an easy task, I commend him, i practice Kyokushin btw!
Why? Sounds like skill issue
@@tyriqcleo5899 Not sure what you're trying to get at with that comment, or what point you're attempting to make!
@@dakentaijutsu2010He's trying to say that he himself is an idiot.
すごいな、この人。
腕の動きが機械のようだ。
相当に強い人だ。
Beautiful! Congratulations on fighting for your dream
Congratulations and what a great journey you have.
amazing story. just like the story of the agerman shaolin monk...very inspired. stay focused all the time
It's nice that the assistant will give him a massage while he is in the middle of a grading.
So you started training with Sensei in 2007. Is this video relatively recent?
Congratulations on your achievement! Very humbling.
Massive respect!!
Very intersting. And well done.
But is there kumite examined too?
I would like to see some, because uechi Ryu is very particular.
Congratulations 🎉
Congratulations Sense. God bless
Congrats on the grading.
Did you say that you went to the Dojo wearing your black belt from another style? If that's true, no wonder you were beaten.
I feel your spirt through your story. I’m a 5th Dan Kenpo . Usss
Gratz Sensei !
Blessings to all
Relaxed, explosive power and unbreakable structure. Well done.
Nice Video, congrats
Congratulation Sensei Shai
Congratulations.
I train goju ryu, but you practice excellently.
I see you practice a lot.
it doesn't matter that your fists are not closed. (joke)
I wish you much joy in your training and further development
What happened to the first 5 dans? Were they being disruptive?
This is a joke I know what they mean.
"One advice". I wish that was the normal for sensei and senpai. Too often so much advice that you just feel crushed, unable to perform w/o fear of doing one of the many, many things you have been advised to change. Let one be enough, until one is mastered. Then another one.
I hope to see a shorei-kan Goju Ryu master on here one day
Wow wow wow
I am just 7 kyu and practiced 15 years ago but i saw that down swing in your punches and that is the only thing he complained about in the end.
👍
OOH 6th my Teacher Was in his 40's to but he Was 5ith
Dan 25 Year's Ago ../Bow
kol ah kavod!
that old gentleman kick is actually hurt as hell, that is not a random kick
The test should be fighting a formidable opponent with no limitations on contact. Anything short of that is just a waste of time...
Shai, you are so determined to pursue your dream.
Kol hakavot Sensie!
Only in Japan🏅
these are all the sound effects that they make for the movies with whips and celery sticks etc....but in this scenario its all genuine. That short bald guy is quick as a cat and his strikes look unpleasant to take!
That’s the real Mr Miyagi
really sad for the is a rail heh
They went easy on him for money and funding
Alors qu avec un bon 357 …
lol
Za Mma borbe neuporabno🤣🤣🤣
😂😂😂😂
Sensey accepts given Dan test from his adept. Without kimono, this is terrible. This is disrespectful to the traditions of the way busido% osss
My friend the uniforms are not kimono. Kimono is for women and for fashion. The uniforms you see are called gi. Also the Japanese word for teacher is sensei not sensey.
Also I don't see an issue with a senior instructor coming in wearing a nice shirt and pants. It's most likely his day off and he was asked to come in to help grade
He moves very mechanical and not fluid and natural, more like a robot. He imitates the moves he learned but his mind and body does not live the moves which does make it look so strange and artificial.
Not meaning to be harsh, but you speak with no insight into the discipline. The kata Sanchin looks strange and unnatural to you because it is particularly focused on pracitising a particular breathing technique, and Uechi ryu goes to particular extremes here. This gentleman has done this kata thousands of times before and he is far beyond the beginner level where one memorizes and replays movements without understanding. Even the "attacks" by the partner are not a toughness test but are supposed to help perfect the breathing and muscle contraction/relaxation cycles in the presence of distractions.
Sado masachism.......
When students don’t turn their head before they move! Its shows the instructor is not at the best! Don’t care where he’s from! Common mistake I see all the time! Students movement is not up to par! Must look before you move your next strike or position!!
These sensei are not the best of quality! Sorry to say! I give the students a B average!
Sensei Tana from Japan and Sensei Kimura were my instructors since 1985
Sensei Kimura was one of a kind! Never be anyone like him ever! Shukokai Karate!
Was with him from 1987 to 1995 until his passing! Rip!
Oss to all!
Also when I watch some videos of other students! I see that most just don’t get the torque aspect! They move like robots! Not understanding circles and torque! Very sad and a waste of time in practicing!
I’m thinking we seen the documentary!!! I think we’re close to same age, so similar journey.
Si ma alla fine è uno stile di kung fu derivato dal kung fu .
So gheyyyy 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Impressed by your determination brother but all those stupid katas don't work in mma even in the street. Learn your bjj and judo and boxing and mixed them up..I know all these from experience. Gordon Ryan and John Donaher are future of mixed martial arts.
Yeah I agree katas are not the best for real situations but they have to learn them for grading. Not a fan myself but if tradition is what you're after and it brings balance and happiness to practitioners then why not? Just don't try them on MMA fighters lol.
MMA is sport the new wwf
Hi; seems that you cannot understand the effect of couple of these punches in the right places. Most mma punches are a joke. People there only practice stamina etc. They are athletes not self defenders
@TheReverb1 one day you will know what I mean..all in all keep on training regardless of my stupid views.
