  • Shai Hai takes his 6th-dan black belt grading in Uechi-ryu Karate at the Kiyohide Shinjo Dojo in Yomitan, Okinawa.
    Examiners were Kiyohide Shinjo, Narihiro Shinjo, and Yoshimitsu Matsusaki all icons of Okinawan Karate.
    In Uechi-ryu karate, for 6th-dan there is no kumite component, but Shai Hai had to perform the three key kata of the style.
    After the grading I had the opportunity to chat with Kiyohide Shinjo about Series Three of SENSEI: Masters of Okinawan Karate. I'm excited about the possibility of interviewing Shinjo Sensei later this year.

    Testing for your 6th dan in uechi Ryu (or any belt before and afterwards) is obviously not an easy task, I commend him, i practice Kyokushin btw!

    "One advice". I wish that was the normal for sensei and senpai. Too often so much advice that you just feel crushed, unable to perform w/o fear of doing one of the many, many things you have been advised to change. Let one be enough, until one is mastered. Then another one.

      My friend the uniforms are not kimono. Kimono is for women and for fashion. The uniforms you see are called gi. Also the Japanese word for teacher is sensei not sensey.
      Also I don't see an issue with a senior instructor coming in wearing a nice shirt and pants. It's most likely his day off and he was asked to come in to help grade

    He moves very mechanical and not fluid and natural, more like a robot. He imitates the moves he learned but his mind and body does not live the moves which does make it look so strange and artificial.

    • @yxx_chris_xxy
      @yxx_chris_xxy หลายเดือนก่อน +15

      Not meaning to be harsh, but you speak with no insight into the discipline. The kata Sanchin looks strange and unnatural to you because it is particularly focused on pracitising a particular breathing technique, and Uechi ryu goes to particular extremes here. This gentleman has done this kata thousands of times before and he is far beyond the beginner level where one memorizes and replays movements without understanding. Even the "attacks" by the partner are not a toughness test but are supposed to help perfect the breathing and muscle contraction/relaxation cycles in the presence of distractions.

    When students don’t turn their head before they move! Its shows the instructor is not at the best! Don’t care where he’s from! Common mistake I see all the time! Students movement is not up to par! Must look before you move your next strike or position!!
    These sensei are not the best of quality! Sorry to say! I give the students a B average!

      Sensei Tana from Japan and Sensei Kimura were my instructors since 1985
      Sensei Kimura was one of a kind! Never be anyone like him ever! Shukokai Karate!
      Was with him from 1987 to 1995 until his passing! Rip!
      Oss to all!

      Also when I watch some videos of other students! I see that most just don’t get the torque aspect! They move like robots! Not understanding circles and torque! Very sad and a waste of time in practicing!

    Impressed by your determination brother but all those stupid katas don't work in mma even in the street. Learn your bjj and judo and boxing and mixed them up..I know all these from experience. Gordon Ryan and John Donaher are future of mixed martial arts.

    • @meagainokay7673
      @meagainokay7673 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah I agree katas are not the best for real situations but they have to learn them for grading. Not a fan myself but if tradition is what you're after and it brings balance and happiness to practitioners then why not? Just don't try them on MMA fighters lol.
