  • The brand new Leica Q2 was just announced and I spent almost a full week with the camera. I treated it as if it were my Leica M6, the camera I've carried with me on a daily basis for about 6 years. How does it stack up? Let's take a look.

    Have had Q2 for two weeks now.Its so impressive,amazing quality,easy to use.Did a shoot using two profoto guns..results superb.
    Dont waste money on DSLRS and Multiple lenses..the Q2 is good for 90% of pro use.

      I never shoot JPEG just raw because the wonderful 85mb files are a joy to work with.
      Best thing is to select the RAW + JPEG SHOOTING OPTION and compare. Great camera!

      Andrew Li not the same. Equivalent field of view doesn’t make the lens a 35mm and thus the image will be different in terms of depth of field and compression. Cropping a 28mm to 50mm especially should absolutely not be considered equivalent to an actual 50mm lens because the optics are simply different.

    • @theoutlierssociety4099
      @theoutlierssociety4099 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      P S The lens compression is not exist actually, cropping is actually zooming, the perspective change is due to the fact that the difference between subject and camera changes. Check out fstoppers’ video on lens comparison don’t exist.

      @fellowcitizen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I'm really hoping that they produce a companion camera somewhere between 35mm and 50mm in (native) focal length. (I know I'm in the minority, but the non-optically corrected distortion does bother me slightly, and I'd expect it to be less severe for ~42mm.)

    Leica Q, Leica Q2, M6, M262, Canon this, Sony that, Fujifilm that...it doesn't matter. I'll say it how The Rock would, "IT DOESN'T MATTER WHAT YOU SHOOT WITH". A camera at the end of the day is a box that records light, sometimes with a piece of film, sometimes with a digital sensor. What matters is the memories you make with yours and the places you go with it, the people you put in front of it. Those things are all way more important than trying to collect them all. Would you rather buy 5 great new cameras in a year or put 20 of your best photos on display? I know I'm just rambling at this point, and a lot of people won't read long comments but whatev. This video was good Matt, I'm not knocking you, I just had these thoughts.

      Greg McKnight You’ve got that right. That’s what I’m always preaching. Use whatever tool you want and focus on the work. The important work.

    • @byebyebeano8616
      @byebyebeano8616 5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Sorry to disagree, but the tool you use to create is crucial. Don't say to a guitar player that playing a Les Paul when he actually plays Strats doesn't matter. I've tried many cameras as a professional photographer and I cannot emphasize enough how important the feel of the camera, the placement of the buttons, the layout of the menus, the look of the files are. Because, at the end of the day, that is how you express what you have in mind that counts. For me, the best cameras I ever used were a Rolleiflex and a Leica M6. Today I shoot Canon for pro use only. It's reliable, the files are great, lenses are very nice. But I never take my Canon for personal work because I do not bound with it 100%.

    I had the Q1 for one year. Street, concerts and one wedding. It´s a superb camera. The upgrade is interesting. I personally don´t need 47MP. But now you can crop better with more headroom. As i saw at the datasheet, they improved the dynamic range from 12.7 to 14 stops. This is more important to me. Would be nice if you could change the resolution for the DNG. For example. 28mm = 24 MP. Its enough. Then if you need 35 or 50mm switch it to full resolution. That would be nice.

    You can purchase an M10 with 50m Summarit lens for 9500 dollars new . The M6 ceased manufacture 20 years ago and the body is still selling on eBay etc for 2500 dollars or more depending upon the special edition, you then of course have to add lenses. The SL body is roughly 6000 dollars again lens needed.. so from a modern technology perspective and value proposition within the Leica range the Q2 offers a substantial amount at this price point. Pre owned Leica Q’s after 4 years are still selling for around 3000 dollars. I think these are all exceedingly important points as it relates to the cameras value. They are like Rolex watches in that they interest certain types of people who value the craftsmanship that goes into these products. The lenses are also some of the finest optics in the world. I own a Leica Q and also a Fuji X100F and I will buy the new Leica Q2 and probably get nearly 65 percent of the Leica Q original purchase price back.

    I use the Q essentially for every day photography, and also for scouting in projects. My "project" cameras are a 51 PM medium format, and a 6x4.5 film medium format. The cropping is a mixed blessing. I have a Q and rarely crop to 35mm, although as you say, sometimes 28 is a little too wide, but I do crop often to 50 youand the resulting files are too small, which is a problem if you want to print large. It's great that you still have all of the original image, because that allows you to modify the composition, but I've had to interpolate a couple times images I just wouldn't want to lose. The 47 mp of the Q2 makes it tempting, just for that.

  • @Biosynchro
    @Biosynchro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I think you slightly underestimate the Q2. I'd say it's very much a professional camera. Even when cropped to a 50mm equivalent AOV, the file is about 14Mpx - and you can recompose if you need to. Perhaps not enough before cropping, but certainly more than enough afterwards.
    The whole thing makes a lot of sense. For example, landscapes are improved with more resolution, but portraits aren't. Of course this assumes that you're shooting landscapes with wide-angle lenses.
    The idea of cropping for a narrower AOV is a very workable one, now that we have high resolution sensors with a high S:N ratio. It's arguably better than a smaller sensor with a zoom lens. That's worth pondering!
    It's also superior to any DSLR with a wide-angle prime lens, and that includes all sorts of metrics such as size and weight. It's slightly smaller than an A7rIII with a 28/2 mounted. Interestingly, it's about the same size as an M body with a 28mm Summicron.
    I am very certain that wedding photographers will like the Q2. ;-)

    You mentioned in the video manual focusing when shooting a wedding. Clearly you have mastered manual focus if you do it for a wedding. I'd love to see a video about how you get to that level of ability with manual focus. I just started using a few 7artisans lenses on my Fuji cameras and discovered that I'm actually better at it without using peaking and I'm improving with practice. This is a topic that I haven't found many useful videos about. Keep up the great work.

Any Leica camera will stand up above your standard DSLR, Leica photography is in a class by itself. I put away my Leica M6 years ago when digital hit the scene, but after your review, I think it’s time to get back into the fold and pick up the Q2, basically for the megapixels and weather seal quality. In actuality your buying the great Leica quality lens and getting a body for free.....Leica photography is in a class by itself, and can only be produced with a Leica camera... so, I’m going to have to sell my Porsche....

    I am so close to buying the Q2 as a backup. I travel tons around the world and carry an A7RIII these days. I am a total amateur but I love shooting and really like a clean tight image of a scene, landscape or even a portrait of a person who lives somewhere in the world off the grid. I just came back 2 weeks ago from the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal and used the A7rIII with a 24-105 F4. I also shot sometimes with an iPhone XS Max when my camera was tucked away or too heavy. The iPhone images were insanely sharp -- even more than the Sony often. But, but, but... When loading the images into Lightroom, the iPhone falls fast and the image dies when correcting. The Sony has lots of room to bring out its best when shot in RAW. That makes sense I suppose -- but jpg to jpg, I would always take the iPhone crazy enough. Back to the Leica -- I would like to get one to carry around when I dont want to bring out a bigger A7RIII with 28-75 lens or other larger lens. Question: Will the Leica stand up to an iPhone? Seriously, I am curious. Have you tested the two? I dont want to carry man-jewelry and folklore for the sake of it. I really want a much better picture than the convenience of the iPhone. Please advise.

That's NOT the reason why Leica is unique and expensive. it produces MICRO-CONTRAST that no other camera/lens does. Meaning, no matter what megapixel you camera has (more megapix you only appreciate at 100% zoom. and no one looks at an image that close anyway) it is still full of live-like details. I have medium format Fuji GFX 50S. Unless you zoom in you dont really see overall details. I shot with Leica Q2 and it has so much micro-contrast that blew me away. you see ton of details without even zooming in. THAT"S WHY it is so extensive and is worth every penny in my opinion.

      What’s microcontrast?

    • @tjmanou6422
      @tjmanou6422 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JP1050x Basically lets say you shoot the exact same image from the same distance, architecture for example. one camera is 100 megapix 35mm sensor camera (which is a lot) the other is Leica 35mm sensor 24 megapix.
      when you have them side by side on your computer or small to mid size print, you will see a lot of details (not just sharpness) in stones, trees, leaves etc coming from leica lenses. more live-like. You feel you can actually touch them. Leica lenses are not mass produced, hand made and expensive for that reason. The other 100 megapix camera will only show you more pixels when you zoom in. otherwise it will more likely look flat two-dimensional. Of course this is a generalization and im sure some better than others but when it comes to leica lenses, that realistic 3d looking pop, there is no match to be honest. Hope this helps.

    • @JP1050x
      @JP1050x 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TJ Manou thanks for your thoughtful explanation. I like to ask that question, because micro-contrast is not a technical attribute to a lens. People just started saying it in recent years, and the term started to stick with no scientific measurable basis. However, people tend to associate it with expensive lenses to add to the mystic of secret sauce that a lens may or may not have. Personally, I would just buy an ultra-expensive lens just to have it and enjoy it. In my opinion, its not necessary to add any pretentious words to describe a really nice lens. ... Btw, I own many very expensive Leica and Zeiss lenses, so I have some first hand experience of the attributes of those lenses.

    • @tjmanou6422
      @tjmanou6422 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JP1050x i agree there is no technical word to it (to my knowledge) and ppl tried to explain it in words like 3d pop, micro-contrast etc. i used canon for 10 years, Fuji GFX for over 3 years and many others. And honestly it is visually apparent to me that leica lenses produce an almost unmatched detail in low res especially. maybe it's subtle for many to care about but i definitely see it and did 1 to 1 comparison many time to make sure it's not just a "hype" im buying into before spending $$$. I still own all three brands for different jobs and still appreciate what one does that the other doesn't. Thank you

    I had the Q, with the 28, 35, 50 mm crop lines. Very disappointing that the Pana/Leica D-Lux did better above 35mm because of the Q's crops. Today with the D-Lux7 I shoot most everything at the 75mm setting, and there the Q2 is still down to 7mp compared to the D-Lux7's 17mp. I find myself fascinated by the Q2, but can't quite see forcing myself to 35mm and below. The reviewer here seemed disappointed that the Q2 is basically a 28mm lens with "only" 30mp of resolution at the 35mm crop. I didn't quite understand that.

    • @Biosynchro
      @Biosynchro 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      You won't, but those extra pixels are really handy for the crop modes. It's almost like you don't need a zoom lens anymore (i.e. a standard zoom, like a 28-75).

      Keep in mind that increasing the pixels on the same FF sensor will result in smaller pixel pitch and therefor lesser low light performance.
      Now the firmware of the Q2 will be much better so that will probably even it out in the end but it is just good to know.
      And , with the Q2 (cute too) the Q price will drop, new and second hand .

    Leica makes beautiful compact camera cases for the X1, X2, D-Lux, C-Lux, and other Panasonic-made Leicas (the X1 and X2 were made by Leica). Look up the 19554 case for the D-Lux7 camera - it fits the camera perfectly with no room to spare, fully enclosed and protecting the lens, and it looks elegant - not like the old-fashioned camera cases.
    The point of this is that Leica is making a $5k compact camera with the Q2, and then denying that it's a compact camera by not providing a compact case - only providing ugly photographer cases that are used for system cameras.
    If Leica were to get their heads out of the sand on this Q2, it would be to provide the elegant carry case type that is available for all of their other compact non-system cameras. The point of that is to keep people focused on what the Q2 really is, and make it fun to carry most places without a camera bag or a half-cover that doesn't protect the lens.
    I've been using these cases for 15 years, and they make a night-and-day difference in the pleasure of owning a compact Leica camera.

It's a premium everyday/travel etc camera for an enthusiast that can take the place of a A7Riii/Z7/D850 with a really nice lens. Of course people will complain "5K for a walk around camera??" but lots of people buy an expensive high MP mirrorless/DSLR and super expensive glass to take pictures of their vacations or their kids... What's the difference between using a Sony A7Riii & 24mm f/1.4 GM for $4300~ and a Leica Q2 for $4999? Yeah it's expensive but you get a lot for the money... and it's not too far off from the competition and will probably hold it's value better.
