As a Dutch person, Kings day in Amsterdam is like Dante's inferno. To crowded, noice,I prefer the small villages, with Happy Kids running around whilst safe.
Even if you wanna go to Koningsdag in the Netherlands, you need to get there realy early, so hotel/motel. And that goes for the residents too. Same with Pride. Awesome we have it but please plan ahead!
As a Dutch person living in America I miss King’s Day. It was always awesome. Me and my friends would always take part in the celebrations and parties and everything. It was a good time.
The toilets are in the back or in the front. On 9:42 you see built on the front. We have a little portable one in the front. We are 100% prepared for the massive amounts of beer pouring out of our body's ;). (and sometimes, yes the canals are the open sewage...)
As a Dutchie who was ill on Kingsday, thank you for sharing your experience! One thing about the flags though, they usually come out during special occassions. If a high-school student passes their exam you'll probably see a flag with a backpack hanging on it. Today (the 4th of May), you will probably see the flags half-raised because of Remembrance-day where as tomorrow on Liberation day they will be up again!
tompouce has cream and needs to stay cold so it's not the best food to sell in the streets as it will melt and or spoil. You will find it in Hema, bakeries and supermarkets usually
Amsterdam during King’s Day is verrrrry different from the rest of the country imo 😆 In most other towns it’s a bit more chill. I used to only go to Amsterdam when I was young and full of energy, now I just prefer the small town coziness and flea markets.
Great video and lovely humor you both have. We moved from Amsterdam to Portugal (Lisbon area) three years ago and the Kings day (in the past Queens day) were always favourite days throughout the year. We lived near the Vondelpark so you could choose the amount of people you like to meet. I always avoid the Prinsengracht crossing Jordaan and Westerstraat. These places always get the most tourist and no fun to be with all the drinking and music. Katrina my wife agrees totally with your dressing style. Orange in many layers. Keep up the good work and we enjoy the sunny life here.
There are just a few days a year I hang out the flag. Kingsday, memorialday at 4th of may and liberationday the 5th of may. And if your kids graduate you put out the flag with their school bag attached to it.
It will always be Koninginnedag= Queens Day! I I lived during Queen Wilhelmina, Queen Juliana and Queen Beatrix......and with a little help may be during Queen Amalia. 🥳🥳
I don't live in Amsterdam but often work there too and found this was a nice walk around Amsterdam zuid that you guys have done on King's Day. Still, I'm glad that it was you and not me, as I'm not the greatest with crowds of tourists either. Those tompoes BTW looked delicious.
loved it guys, embrace the dutch soul and all things good will come to you! really appreciate the gesture towards it, just feeling and experiencing it the real way even with a dislike/fobia to bigger crowds ( just as i have ) . Have a lovely day!
Some of the boats have porta-potties. Those overflow quickly and need regular emptying. Not sure how that works as it is illegal to just dump it in the channel.
Nice video and probs for going into the Amsterdam madness 🙌🏻 most dutchies will avoid the capitol. Kingsday in the smaller cities and towns is probably more suitable. With music that is not boom boom, allot of fun activities for children and just being with friends and family. Also I have never worn orange on kingsday 👍🏻
Easiest way to eat a tompoes is to take the upper piece off and put it under the lower piece.. that way you can eat it with your hands. Hello from a Dutchie
Hi Nate (and Katrina), I admire your courage to jump into this crowd. It takes quite a bit of effort and suffering to create a vlog like this. 😎 Anyway, i did enjoy watchting it 👍
the city places public toilets on some bigger squares usually, there is cafe's, there's spots that let you pee for 50cents, but yh.. 'wild-peeing'(literal translation from wildplassen) is a big problem on King's day
Oh what a great video! The things you do for us. And it wasn't that bad right? Real friendly people everywhere. Katrina trying to pick a fight but with no luck. I'm sure next year you'll do it again. The thing I love most in your videos is see you two having fun. This was fun. You had bad expectations and it turned out just fine. Someone recognized Katrina? Wow. Amazing. And it's all good. Maybe your fear of people and questionable streetfood is wearing off when you get older? Cudos for your outfits! You really made an effort. Thanks! 👍👍🥳
You finally find a tompoes and then eat it like a tourist 😂. Little education, remove the top part and stick it under the bottom. Then you can eat it without the cream squeezing out from all sides. Nice contribution, enjoyed watching.

There was a Hare Krishna young guy that burned himself alive at Kingsday many years ago that remains to be unidentified and now seeing that walk. So I am not sure what that was about.
Some women also just pee over the edge of the boat. You just need someone to hold your hands so you don't fall over. It's what all the bridges are for.
Or you just ask the captain nicely to make a pitstop every hour or so. There's a map of the city where they post all the places with free temporary toilets on king's day, or you just pay a euro at a cafe.

Too many people! Argggghhh! Tompouce isn’t street food. 12:30 they’re throwing it at “Feyenoord”, there’s a big rivalry between Ajax (Amsterdam football team) and Feyenoord (Rotterdam football team), but Ajax sucks now, so they’re only able to win from Feyenoord with silly eggs.
I'm sorry to say this, but since a few years i've grown a pretty big dislike to this 'king' and his wife, and i don't celebrate his birthday. And like many Dutch people, also those who do party, only a handful actually celebrate his birthday, most people just grab any chance of having a party, just for the sake of having a party.
Yes. It's better to have a president. Presidents really unite a country. Nobody likes to party anymore. Look at these people in The Netherlands. Everybody is unhappy and in a bad mood. We need old men like Trump or Biden here. That will make us as good as Murica.
I don’t get why people say it is an ancient institution and it’s not something for current times. Are they going to say the same about a president in 200 years? And who knows the name of the president of Finland or Portugal? Or from our neighbor Germany for that matter. 98% don’t know them, but most of them do know the king of Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium, Spain etc. Royals have just that tiny bit more attention. And on state visits the organizing country rather have a king and queen than a president, with the exception of the president of the US. Every president is a political appointee and subject to party politics, not something I like. Also economically it has more value to have a king and queen than a president. On state visits a king (and/or queen) can visit lots of businesses and factories and broker deals if necessary. Or behind the screens talk about or speed up the process in case of extradition, Dutch citizens in jail, human rights, Dutch appointees for international organizations, or other binational or international issues. A king (and/or queen) has more weight on the scale than a president, in most countries that is. Presidents are so often partizan or insignificant and every four or five years there is an election for a president half the country doesn’t want and doesn’t feel represented by. In that case I rather have a king (and/or queen) which I can’t choose and who is above party interest. How much more money it may cost compared to a president. Which is not as much as people think it is.
@@Jan.Folkersma ''Presidents really unite a country'' Ehh no, but they could tho. ''Nobody likes to party anymore.'' I don't think 'liking' is the problem here. ''unhappy and in a bad mood.''
