You don't come all the way to Maastricht to eat some fries with some basic ketchup!😱🤦♂️🚮 He is famous for his Limburgs Zuurvlees. So you have to come back again especially for that trust me🙈🙏
For more than 200 years Maastricht belonged (beside the bisdom of Luik) to the Brabant province of the Dutch republic. Limburg didn't even exist as a province back than.
I work there as an expat, they certainly dress well, I sudenly felt totally underdressed both in the office as well as during shopping in the weekend. And they are extremely chill, but also always late and will never hurry to be one time, which I got to get used to and did not fit in my picture before moving here.
You went to Reitz, and didn't get the "zuurvlees", but ketchup? You missed out on that one! Fun fact: Reitz is the oldes fryshop in The Netherlands. Has been there since 1909.
I’ve been a few times to Maastricht including one time when I ran a marathon from Vise in Belgium along the Meuse/Maas. My only marathon in two countries. I’m going back this coming weekend to do a Parkrun and to enjoy the Christmas market.
The street behind the Hellgate used to be called the Hellstreet but A rich family living there didnt like it and the streetname was changed to St.Bernardusstreet. Extra note my grandmother was born in this street.
Regardless of personal belief, I was taken aback that you'd make this insensitive gesture while pointing out that it's Easter weekend in the culture that you're still a guest in.

Hii! Great you visited our country. Maastricht-girl here 😁 It’s a nice video with a couple of “flaws”… You ate the wrong food at Reitz since eating the fries with ketchup is kinda not done here 😆 The tradition would have been the fries with zuurvlees and mayonnaise. You were at the museum located at the Vrijthof, which is the most famous historical square in town but you didn’t show it. And then… the name Maastricht… translated the city of the Maas, the Meuse, the river surrounded by beautiful places and a historical bridge leading to the modern part you visited last through a beautiful historical part of the city. Another tip would be to visit the surrounding Heuvelland -land of the hills, with its beautiful nature, typical “vakwerk”houses and little villages and towns like Valkenburg. I hope you’ll enjoy these tips on your next time around! 😃
Thank you for your nice video ! I really loved it ! What I would really recommend in Maastricht is visiting the Sint-Servaas church and its 'schatkamer' (treasury room), very interesting. In addition, I would tell you surely not to miss the magically beautiful Onze-Lieve-Vrouwe-plein, and also make time for a relaxed walk through the amazing Stadspark. Maastricht is simiply wonderful.
actually it was the plague .. that's why the house on the other side is called Pesthuis (House of Plague) .. a tradition in 16th and 17th century in the netherlands and flanders to keep people with trasmitted diseases out of the city
Katrina is absolutely right, there used to be a not-Limburg, Limburgse vlaai chain. And it was so mèh in comparison to our vlaai. I live less than 20 minutes from Maastricht, went to school there, go there at least once a month to shop. I walk past that bakery so often, know the mill, but I have never stopped there for vlaai. One of my favorite things to do, is visiting the bookstore, grabbing a cop of coffee and people watch.
There are actually two bookstores in churches in the Netherlands. Both very beautiful and both in very beautiful cities. The other one is in Zwolle. Please feel welcome to visit! You will also like an other church there (Grote Kerk) on which you can climb on the roof now temporarily because of Hanzeyear. Let me know if you need a guide!
On the vlaai, a missed opportunity, cherry and apricot are the traditional vlaaien. But not a problem, you can buy them all over Holland. (multivlaai) Maastricht is great in the summer. In particular the south Limburg area is nice to explore. Beer brewers etc.
Recommendations for next time: The statue of the original musketeer D'Artagnan, he was killed during the siege of Maastricht in 1673. The caves of the Sint Pietersberg. The Sint Servaas treasury is also quite impressive. If you are interested in natural history, Natuurhistorisch Museum, lots of info on how the hills of south Limburg came to be and dinosaur fossils. Close to Maastricht: the Netherlands American Cemetery, many of our brave liberators rest here and it has a newly opened visitor center.

I don't think anyone is overly upset if you pick Maastricht as your favourite. It's historical and so atmospheric. Even late at night there is still life in the plaza's during summer, which you hardly see elsewhere. To clear this up first: Oily balls (oliebollen) are not strictly seasonal products. You can have them during festivities or the ''kermis'' and it is not sacriligious. The pie issue is very troubling. Vlaaien are flat pies, and we have taart, but unfortunately we do not have cake. Cake is just ONE specific baked good from the oven. (The bland one with no extra toppings.) So in Dutch everything is mostly taart. If you want to get the terminology right: The thin ones are franse frietjes, the medium ones are friet/patat, and the thick ones are vlaamse frietjes. In the north people don't care, however, do not call friet ''patat'' below the rivers. That is, unless you like the controversy.
One of the explanations for the name Helpoort is the name of a nearby house "In de Helle" in early 18th century, which was a common name for bakeries and smithies. The gate has had other names as well before.
If I were a Maarstrichtenaar I would be a bit offended by this video. Four hours is not nearly enough for any city, but Maastricht? The claim of Maastricht being the eldest city in the Netherlands is debatable, because multiple cities, like Nijmegen and Voorburg, claim the same. Nijmegen, as imperial city, has my preference over Maastricht, but loses it to Aken in Germany.
It is more correct to call Maastricht the oldest continuously inhabited city in the Netherlands, since it remained an important city in Merovingian and Carolingian times as the seat of the bishop to whom Aachen belonged. In Nijmegen especially the Merovingian times are still a mystery before than the Valkhof castle starts to function in the Carolingian period and for Voorburg there is a huge gap between Roman Forum Hadriani and the medieval village which than is in no way a city ))

Limburg is an area that is divided between the Netherlands and Belgium. And Maastricht is the capital. Fun fact: the border with Belgium around Maastricht has a strane angular form because it is was delimited by the distance cannons could shoot from the star-shaped city walls. We Limburgians are proud of our linguistical and cultural identity that differs from the rest of the country (just like the Frisians are). So we appreciate people noticing the differences. We also think our cuisine is better, more "Burgundian". So next time try typical Limburgian food like sour meat (in Dutch zuurvlees, in Limburgian zoervleisj), or rabbit in Limburgian fashion, and of course our smelly Limburgian cheese or rommedou. Other cool stuff in Maastricht are de StServaas church, the "caves" or the remains of the city fortress (Hoge Fronten). In the basement of hotel Derlon near Our Lady's church you can visit Roman remains. But the most impressive Roman remains is the bath house in Heerlen. In between the two you have the nice town of Valkenburg with the castle ruins on the hill.

It depends how you look at it. Maastricht was already one of the main living places of the Eburonen, a Celtic tribe that was genocided by the Romans around 50BC. That was nearly a century before Nijmegen became a relatively large Roman city over 2000 years ago, because 1 or 2 legions were based there. Nijmegen was much bigger than Maastricht in the 1st and 2nd century, but after 250 AD. The Romans were annihilated north of the highway Calais-Maastricht-Cologne and Nijmegen only emerged again as a city in the 7th or 8th century. We don't know what happened there between 406 and 600 AD.
Maastricht is more then food. Sorry, but you missed so many beautiful spots of this city. This video is kinda disappointing. But it's all good if you had a great time visiting Maastricht.
Bad vlaai is overrated, but they had very good vlaai. Katrina talked it about when she mentioned that Limburgse vlaai is now protected. Not everyone everywhere in the world can bake vlaai and sell it as 'Limburgse vlaai'.
The cafes and restaurants in Maastricht are FAR better than most in Amsterdam. However, we understand there’s demand re “what’s awesome” re Amsterdam. Our favorite Amsterdam restaurants? 1. Seafood Bar. Two locations. Great food. Great Quality. Wow. Nice. (We like the Spui location). 2. Hotel Okura- sushi or teppan yakki. Bonsai!!! 3. Rijsttafel-many good places (eg Samma Sebo) 3A. Hoppe on the Spui- A brown bar that’s at least 400 years old. no food. Just quaff a beerje. I’d go full nuts and order anything with jenever . (Yes. It tastes like pee.)Just be an adult and do it. Make sure the old gents there see you do it. 🤟 4. FEBO- shit food yet perfect when drunk at 3 am. Uitstekend! 😳😵💫🤮 5. Robertos ! The Italian restaurant at the Hilton in Amsterdam Zuid. Warning- too expensive, but the food is killer awesome. Really. Just wow. Best enjoyed if on a company expense account. 😳🫣 or your parents insist on treating you to the best. Just don’t let them view the check. 🤭 Our favs in Maastricht? We’re not saying as we don’t want any tourists here. For real. Eet smakelijke en tot ziens!✌️🤟🖖

Maastricht is fun to go and drink something. But it is also kinda boring ... . Nothing really special.
Maastricht is more then food. Sorry, but you missed so many beautiful spots of this city. This video is kinda disappointing. But it's all good if you had a great time visiting Maastricht.
We will be back! We added this stop on the end of a long trip.
What are your top 3 places we should see?!
Never call Dutch or Belgian frites, French Fries. That's an insult! The French are thin and dry things.
Nijmegen is the oldest city in the Netherlands. Not Maastricht 😉
Vlaai is overrated
Hard disagree. 🫶🏻
@@nateandkatrinadotheworld Me too!!!
Bad vlaai is overrated, but they had very good vlaai. Katrina talked it about when she mentioned that Limburgse vlaai is now protected. Not everyone everywhere in the world can bake vlaai and sell it as 'Limburgse vlaai'.
OMFG who the fuck eats KETCHUP with their fries?! 🤢
Literally millions of Americans. 😉
Dennis … the “f” word is not necessary
If you have only a few hours to visit a city like Maastricht, your work/life balance is a big mess.
This comment is a big mess, am I right? 🥴🤣✌️
Bonsai!!!
3. Rijsttafel-many good places (eg Samma Sebo)
3A. Hoppe on the Spui- A brown bar that’s at least 400 years old. no food. Just quaff a beerje. I’d go full nuts and order anything with jenever .
(Yes. It tastes like pee.)Just be an adult and do it. Make sure the old gents there see you do it. 🤟
4. FEBO- shit food yet perfect when drunk at 3 am. Uitstekend! 😳😵💫🤮
Our favs in Maastricht? We’re not saying as we don’t want any tourists here. For real.
Eet smakelijke en tot ziens!✌️🤟🖖
