it's not a glitch, it's an intentional feature so you're less likely to get killed while loading in!

I'm pretty sure because you used the mace to break a block it required 6 levels to add the enchant. If you hadn't I think it would've been 5 levels.

I don't think durability changes anvil cost unless you are repairing the item, I think what you were supposed to do is get the xp from the overkill advancement which I think you get from hitting something from really high up

I wouldn't be surprised if you were intentionally stuck 1 level short of enchanting the mace just so you would waste time trying to find a use for it before realizing you had to do the tedious lava climb. Seems like a good troll to me.

That definitely wasn't the intended solution. But putting a bucket in that dispenser instead of doing it with command blocks was a real oversight.
Buckets break literally every puzzle map.
