Had the same issue on my E46, resealed all the callipers , new Flexi hoses, now replacing all the callipers with new and discs and pads plus painting them up before fitting, looking forward to your next videos on the calliper repair.
Whilst it’s disappointing that the rear brakes callipers seem to be comprehensively rusted , it’s still a great lesson to be learned - review and replace fluids regularly ! Great stuff as always mate, chin up push on - looking forward to the next instalment.
I would rethink just sorting the rear pistons and discs. It's a heavy and powerful car. You dont want the fronts to go wrong. Brakes and tyres are the first priority! Keep up the videos👍
I have the same issue on my E70 X5, serious smell and heat from front driver side wheel. Strange steering too like ive got a flat tyre. Every issue I have had with this BMW, you have done a video on!
I'm going to use this vid as a guide to fix my rear left brake. It's not yet stuck on the disk. But as soon as the parts have heated up you'll find me on the side of the road. The garage says nothing is wrong, or they cant find the issue. I'm willing to bet that the 2 months of not moving at all caused the brake to seize up. Might just go ahead and check all 4 sides myself.
I should hope so too... I don’t think that particular earth strap does a whole lot as it just bolts from the subframe to the exhaust but I will be replacing it anyway!
I currently have a brake problem on my E91. Same corner. Checked through the Calliper and piston, they are fine so going to be renewing the brake flexi hose as they do tend to cause issues also.
@@GeorgeAusters I'm noticing my disc getting pretty hot with excessive brake dust on the wheel. So assumed it was the piston. Looked inside the piston seal, was slightly rusty so was all cleaned out and is functioning as it should and moving freely. But recently it has started to drag again. I learned the flexi hoses can clog up inside, causing the fluid to not return, which causes sticking. So hoping a replacement will fix my issue.
Good thing you found the issue sooner than later. On the positive note, we will be able to have another video on the repair of the brakes! All the best

Hello buddy I've just subscribed to your channel recently I love all your videos keep up the good work. Just wondering will you be doing a video on replacing the thermostat on the 760li ?
Left my e90 sitting for a month last summer and same thing happened, alloy was on fire. You'll need two new rear discs as one will almost certainly be warped
At least you find it in right time before it was totally unsafe. Nice video but honestly I had not enjoy it - I could feel the pain you faced. Maybe I am too sensitive as I am also having some issue with my E91 - overetarted intake cam and noone has clue whats wrong. Wish you best of luck mate and keep doing great work!
Had the same issue with my e91, rear left caliper seized. Took both rear callipers out and sandblasted them. Rebuilt them, painted. Zinc primer and proper 2 component paint. New brake pads and lines. Had replaced the handbrakes not to long ago. So everything is like new in the back. Idk why but rear of the car especially bmw calipers seems to rust the fuck up. Btw i used a huge pipe wrench and caliper in wise to twist the piston out. Used such force i was sure i gulled the inside of cylinder. But it was fine. When i had sandblasted them they looked brand new. Unbelievable
Had the same issue while ago, trying to patch things doesn't work, had to change caliper , two brake discs and pads, brake flush done too, now I am waiting for new front discs and pads, just to let you know it is not great idea to push old brake fluid trough the system (all crap might get to abs pump) it is safer to bleed it out while pushing the piston.
It would be easier but not cheaper. I have also found it looks strange when 1 or 2 of the calipers are new and the others are rusty. I'll be cleaning them all up so they look the same
I had a sticking caliper on my E46 330ci. I stripped it down, it was all moving correctly and when I refitted it the damn thing still stuck. I ended up with a new caliper from ebay for £40
@@GeorgeAusters I didn't replace the pistons as they were not rusty, everything seemed to move fine until bolted to the car. Replacing the whole caliper was the easiest solution considering that they were not expensive.
Yeah I was kind of toying with the idea of just replacing the calipers but thought it would look odd with 1 or 2 brand new shiny calipers then the rest rusty
@@GeorgeAusters haha lol , like if the piston locked up. Was the brake pad locked on the disc ? Was there like a feeling of something holding the car back (resistance)
To be honest, not a whole lot, probably because it’s an auto and has 440bhp.. Probably didn’t help my MPG though! I did hear it squealing and burning on my last drive in it
Your out pad looked warn the inner not. The disk has prob warped. You need to redo both sides and if the piston is sticking its prob best to get a new caliiper
Don’t even waste your time And money rebuilding the callipers just replace them completely. Coming from an ex BMW tech.... replace BOTH rear callipers, all metal brake lines on the rear at the same time, rubber brake lines, discs and pads. Do NOT be a penny pinched on this sort of car, especially if you are planning on selling it like you did with the E46.
I’m replacing all the brake hoses, rear discs, pads, handbrake shoe assemblies and rebuilding the callipers. I don’t want to replace them with new callipers as they will look odd compared to the fronts

What you've described is exactly the same issue with one of my calipers. Good video by the way and keep up the good work 👍

I think the main problem is people not changing the fluid every 2 years
love the video, that is a bit of a bummer, but it gives a opertunity for a new video
Absolutely! Just means I can’t take it for a drive until it’s all done though😅
Wouldn’t throwing water over a very hot disc cause it to possibly crack?
you can warp them for sure.

but I have enjoyed sealey rachet when I saw it :D
We used to spray WD40 under the return rubber and work the piston back and forth until it was smooth moving ( back in the day) to unseized calipers.
I think these are too far gone to be honest... Makes sense given the state of the brake fluid before I flushed it
