    Really good video. Unless I’m misunderstanding something, you don’t need to magnetically attach the matte box to your lens to get the flexibility to set it at an angle (which is a really interesting idea). It’s just backing off the lock lever on the box and rotating the box to where you want it, I’d say. But the magnetic filter holder, in tandem, is still pretty interesting.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, that's absolutely true. You can adjust the angle just using the locking lever (though not quite as speedy). I've also discovered that not all of my Xume rings are equally magnetic, wish some barely holding the box in place and others providing more security... and I'm still prone to using a small piece of black foam paper, attached with a rubber band, when I'm on a gimbal.

    First: Clever on, I was looking for someone using the xume Idea and here you are. Second: I really like that you put the prices in perspective. Paying close up to 500 Dollars for a piece of plastic and metal is really expensive. People by a good TV for that.

      Thanks! Why matte boxes haven't suffered the fate of cheap Chinese knock-offs is a mystery to me (actually, that goes for the magnet filter attachments as well). It's pretty ridiculous what some companies are charging.

      @@seifenhasedreizehn4077 I have found that the strength of the Xume magnets can vary, and the battebox pushes the limits-- meaning its easier to bump, or shake off with a couple of my xume.

      @@seifenhasedreizehn4077 Yup, that's how I have mine set up, with two magnetic rings. Keep in mind that if you use a variable ND or polarizer, it's tricky to adjust when inset. Not impossible by any means, just awkward.

    Hi Hurricane Images, how is vignetting like especially when you add an inside filter or the xume plus inside filter? What focal lengths and settings can you go up to before vignetting becomes an issue? Thank you.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On a full frame, the box does fine at 28mm but is unusable at 20mm (I don't have anything in between). With a filter inside, there's a little vignette at 28, but I'm using a double magnetic system (magnetic rings attaching the box to the lens, and another set to attach the filter to the box), and I bet the vignette would disappear if I didn't have that extra "extension" from the lens.

    Really good review. Thanks for reminding people or informing people about the importance of side flags. I don’t love the way the filter sits on the front of the box either… But it is nice to have something this light weight and mostly functional for run and gun handheld. But give me my big, threestage, swing away matte box for optimum workflow and light control, any day of the week under normal circumstances. You have a new follower

      One thing that wasn't mention that the worst light comes from the very side creating reflections between glasses. So that is already blocked by the mattebox even without flags.

    Adjust the angle ??? Even if the box was square and not rectangular I would still ask : what is the widest angle possible before vignetting is created by the fixed 'walls' ?
    ( I'm looking indeed just for such a "french flap" to add to my DG DN 35mm f/1.2 (82mm). Any solution ?)

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a 35mm on a big diameter lens has it's challenges. I'm working on a DIY solution using one of the filter adapters that flip up and down, attaching a french flag instead of a filter. That way there are no walls at all, just the flap.

    • @AR-vf7vg
      @AR-vf7vg 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hurricaneimagesmedia Meanwhile the (new?)
      'Smallrig mini matte box pro 3680"
      could be the solution also for you (filters, + flaps on three sides + DYY 4th flap) ?
      Thank You for your DYY idea.
      It could perhaps also be this standalone : A filter adapterring such as from Cokin (at B+H) with or without a DIY black wooden ring or square plate (with lensdiametre cut-out
      (or the lens's regular sunshield !)
      to attach to a (one ore more)
      "swan neck USB led lamp" (cut short?)
      cut away the LED (put M-screw threads?) to stick on flap(s) (one big curved?).
      (The DG DN 35mm f1.2 is sensitive to side-lights even with it's regular sunshield)

      The Smallrig matte box pro caught my eye, too. I have a Tilta mini matte box, but I'm trying to find a solution for anamorphic-- the Tilta box isn't wide enough. I think the Smallrig might be, but I chafe at having two boxes that are so similar (and my Tilta becoming a paperweight). I tried the swan neck DIY, but it's hard to get it positioned just right-- and I hate having it connected to my cold shoe. What I'm hoping will work is this folding filter ring (ebay.to/3wu21dW) with an old plastic matte box flag I have lying around; I'll thread it onto a magnetic filter ring so it can pop on and off. It will weigh next to nothing, so it should be good for a gimbal as well. But I doubt it would be wide enough for a side-sensitive 35mm; it'll largely be topside.

      I am somehow intrigued that such a small and elegant (and close to the lens) solution will be sufficient to you.
      Myself I actually have a big (accordéon-type) COMPENDIUM Lens Hood (clever thing on a 3 filter box) to salvage. ..'suffices' to get around to make an adapter to the correct filtersize.
      I hadn't thought about the possibility to use the hotshoe...that leads me to that I have L-brakes on my cameras, and slimm arca-swiss accessories....

      Good question, I should have covered that. There's no vignetting until 28mm, and then you'll see darkness in the very corner edge during photos. By 20mm (my widest lens) forget it. All of your lenses should attach just fine, as there are adapter rings for different lens diameters.

    I have a question about using a circular filter along with the 4x5 filter. My filter threads 77mm onto the lens and the front thread of the filters grows to 86mm. Would that be too big?

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There's a thread on the inside of the matte box, so you can put your 77mm circular there. It comes with different adapters for attaching the box to your lens, so I use the 77mm, which allows me to attach to my lens at that diameter, and then have a 77mm filter inside the box. You can add a 4x5 after that (though I'm not sure if you'll start having reflection issues.

    Does the mattebox have a filter ring inside of it? If not, how did you place the xumi filter holder inside of the mattebox? Looking to place a screw on variable ND, but unsure of how it could work.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, there's a filter ring inside. It's a size smaller than the attachment ring-- i.e., if you're attachment ring is 77mm, the internal filter is 72mm. I'm a bit baffled by this, because for the video I put the same sized Xumi ring inside (77-77mm), and it screwed in; but when I tested it just now, it won't fit. Only my 72mm filter does now... more exploring ahead.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's a bit confusing. I have 77mm filters, so I use the 77mm lens attachment from Tilta's kit. But the internal filter holder on the box is 72mm, so I have to use a step-up filter to make it all work. I don't know if this is true for all of the internal attachment rings (that the filter ring inside the box is one size smaller).

    I like what tilta has done here, but there are a view things, that stop me from buing.
    1. I have all my lenses adapted with a 80 mm adapter. I what a mattebox, that clamps directly to that, so i dont have to change the ring or buy 5 of them.
    2. I just like the ability of using side flags, if needet.
    3. only one filter tray and without rotation, so no pol Filters here without turning the mattebox.
    4. no ability to use grad ND.
    If the mattebox wont have the first issue, I maybe would have got it just because it is so cheap, but now I dont really whant to get it.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      :-) Well, it's damn cheap for a matte box, but prior to this I was using a 50-cent piece of black wrap (light designer's tin foil) and a 10-cent hair band to make a French Flag. It's quick, light as air, and blocks the sun just fine... problem is it blows in the wind so it's not an all-weather tool like a matte box. And you can't use those 4x5 filters I always say I'm going to use but then never do....
