Gotta love how - if you speak norwegian - you get the entire movie spoiled in the first 5 minutes of the movie. Extremely good movie, this is one of those movies I can rewatch dozens of times without it losing any of the suspense.
By the way, the 2011 movie is a prequel to this movie. It ends with the dog running to them just like this one begins. Marries up to this movie perfectly.
The Blood Test Scene was on Bravo's 100 Scariest Movie Moments. The tension builds when Kurt Russell dips that hot wire in the petri dish and all hell breaks loose.
Shaine White: It's a lot like the scene in Jaws when Brody is throwing chum in the ocean, makes a humorous crack, and the shark comes right out of the water while people are laughing, shocking the heck outta everyone
John Carpenter did something real clever with that scene. For only the first hot wire test did they use Russell's real hand. For every one up to the reveal, it's the prop hand, shot from below. So you don't even notice it, it seems regular at that point, and then BOOM!
The detached head with spider legs scene is gross, but it Is funny how it looks all coy when they catch it trying to sneak out. It really does look like it's saying, "Oh. Umm, hi. I wasn't doin nuthin'..." haha
15:25 Fun fact: Wilford Brimley, playing the doctor, was a lifelong outdoorsman and hunter, with years of experience with (among other things) dressing deer and other game. When director John Carpenter asked him what he was thinking/channeling in this scene, (paraphrasing here), Brimley shrugged casually and replied "Picking up my laundry?"
Huskys are adorable but also a HUGE handful. They have a lot of energy that needs to be burned through exercise or they become destructive. They’re also escape artists. They love to explore and are very good at escaping fenced yards
I love how she pointed out the drug user (Palmer). You can actually see what point the Thing takes him over because he stops smoking blunts. No more Palmer, no more addiction.
I'm not sure about that, I think he's already an alien when he's yammering on about the Men In Black. It would fit his sense of humor, and the Thing copies personalities pretty well. Well enough to keep up the addiction, certainly. He stops smoking once everything goes to shit and being on drugs is too much of a handicap.

Everybody remembers the classic and genius practical effects - but don't forget the SOUND DESIGN. Listen to the SOUNDS the Thing makes - the crackle of dissolving bones, the slithering of transforming flesh - - And that UNEARTHLY scream from the partially transformed thing trying to imitate Fuchs early on - Good LORD where did they get THAT? 😱
Love this movie and it's still one of the best remakes of all-time and my favorite John Carpentar film. The Blob, The Fly and The Thing are pretty much the Holy Trinity for me as far as horror remakes go.
I was in a state of awe and shock when I first saw this movie. And now that I'm older I'm still in that same position after having learned all they had to do to make this movie.
My #1 favorite John Carpenter movie ever! I saw this film on Encore Action channel on July 4th,2002, my dad was making us barbecue namely Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, chicken, potato salad, etc. I watched this and it scared the hell out of me! I couldn't eat anything with gravy on it, as it reminded of the grotesque alien transformation sequences. Lol!
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. The special effects and music are great, but what really stands out are the tension and paranoia. You're right there with them, desperately looking for clues and watching everyone just in case they reveal something. Repeat viewings are interesting because some scenes come off completely differently when you know who's infected. One of the more subtle ones I noticed was during the standoff between Garry and Windows. Pay close attention to who is positioned where during the confrontation. Norris and Palmer - the only two present who are infected - are standing off to the side with Fuchs. _They were trying to isolate Fuchs while the rest of the group was distracted._ And though he's out of focus in the background, look at where Palmer is staring: _directly at Fuchs._
If you notice Mac has a blanket and drink, that was from his cabin. It's the only building that was not part of the main camp, and you can see it in the very distance on the large explosion. So Mac can't allow Childs to know his cabin is ok. Remember Childs is waring a new coat, from the wall of the door way he left from. Blair was inside so Child's never saw him outside, it was Blair that removed the generator. Childs was stumbling outside the door, from being attacked.
This was the movie my fiancé and I watched on our first date. He probably thought I was gonna be disgusted but I sat there the whole time and laughed. Movies like this are my favorite! Especially 80s horror flicks. This movie is gold. Such a great movie. The suspense is what makes it so good.

Saw It at the drive in with my parents as a kid. It's one of the best horror Scfi films in cinema next to Alien. Practical effects makes everything better.
Na, Childs is absolutely the Thing at the end. Watch and notice when Mac breathes there is fog but when Childs breathes there is no fog. He’s definitely 100% the thing.

Other people wrote that it's Childs because McReady gave him gasoline that was in the whiskey bottle. Which was why McReady was laughing after Childs drank it

Yes, all of these remote arctic places will have huskies in case they need to use dog sleds for transportation. In case their vehicles break down they have a back up plan.

Fun fact the score for this movie was actually heavily criticized to the point it was nominated for a Razzie. Years later, the same composer Ennio Morricone used the same score for Hateful 8 and got an Academy for it. Goes to show how ahead of its time this movie was.
I had a friend who worked in a research group in Antarctica, the scary part isn't the cold, it's the boredom. The endless days of pure white snow, and at times endless dark nights during winter and fact ur stuck with the same group of people day in and day out.

Most of those dogs are Alaskan Malamutes. Way bigger than Huskies by about 100 pounds. I owned them for over 20 years. Best dogs in the world. As close to a real wolf you'll ever get. Hybrids don't count. They're dangerous. The one in the beginning is a beautiful Mal.

What chills me the most, and this is my personal theory, the head crab thing only stopped to look, because the infected dude forced it to, to try and make himself look more innocent.

To answer her question, yes the dog can stay a dog and infect someone else. All it takes is a little siliva or blood to get in contact with a new host. That's why they stopped sharing food and only ate from cans to avoid contamination.
FYI: this is a remake of a 1951 movie titled : ‘The Thing from Another World’. And I think it’s based on an older book or short story. Also, Marvel’s “The Thing” (Ben Grimm) didn’t debut until 1961
John Carpenter had one of the greatest 10-year runs of any director ever (1978-1988). This film still holds up amazingly well today and it's awesome watching the film with John and Kurt's commentary track.
Carpenter is criminally under-rated as a director and an artist, but he is a rebel at heart. I think his anti-Hollywood vibe kept him out of any accolades he deserved.

THEREFORE Carpenter confirmed he knew the answer all along but left it up in the air for the audience to have people fire up that imagination and think for themselves etc . I just realized that i think Blair was human for a while. The last scene you see with Blair, he didnt have glasses on, which to me means that he was attacked by someone infected sometime closer to the end of the film. The thing cant replicate clothes or other inorganic objects.
The Thing, Alien and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) are the Golden Trio of the Sci-Fi/Horror subgenre. I adore all 3 films. All 3 films inspired almost every scary Sci-Fi movie we have these days
The 2011 "remake" of this movie is actually a prequel. This movie started off with a helicopter chasing the dog trying to shoot it and kill it. The 2011 movie ends with that scene. It deals with the origin of the creature and how it got here.

The Thing is a perfect movie. No wasted scenes, starts with a bang, and the slower parts just add to the tension.

I saw that in theaters in 82 when I was 18! I loved it. One of my favorite sci-fi/ horror movies.

What chills me the most, and this is my personal theory, the head crab thing only stopped to look, because the infected dude forced it to, to try and make himself look more innocent.
I saw this on it's opening and it scared me and the audience into jumping and screaming! Though later I was wondering why they had all these weapons including a flame thrower, at a research station in Antarctic?

To answer her question, yes the dog can stay a dog and infect someone else. All it takes is a little siliva or blood to get in contact with a new host. That's why they stopped sharing food and only ate from cans to avoid contamination.

FYI: this is a remake of a 1951 movie titled : ‘The Thing from Another World’. And I think it’s based on an older book or short story. Also, Marvel’s “The Thing” (Ben Grimm) didn’t debut until 1961
John Carpenter had one of the greatest 10-year runs of any director ever (1978-1988). This film still holds up amazingly well today and it's awesome watching the film with John and Kurt's commentary track.
Carpenter is criminally under-rated as a director and an artist, but he is a rebel at heart. I think his anti-Hollywood vibe kept him out of any accolades he deserved.

Really good reaction guys. Like always.HERES THE THING!(no pun intended)John Carpenter has finally CONFIRMED only a couple of years ago that indeed CHILDS was The Thing in the end. And he said that he(Carpenter)put that very subtle hint for us in the movie by removing(in post) the fire reflection from the actors eyes. As if to seem lifeless.The other guy has a reflection from the fire to differentiate them.Get it?
THEREFORE Carpenter confirmed he knew the answer all along but left it up in the air for the audience to have people fire up that imagination and think for themselves etc .
HUGE horrorclassic with out of this world practical effects that today's garbage cgi can't even touch.They sure don't make shit like this anymore. I'm extremely tired of cgi. I grew up with classic movies like this. Genxer born in 1975.

I just realized that i think Blair was human for a while. The last scene you see with Blair, he didnt have glasses on, which to me means that he was attacked by someone infected sometime closer to the end of the film.
The thing cant replicate clothes or other inorganic objects.
The Thing, Alien and Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) are the Golden Trio of the Sci-Fi/Horror subgenre. I adore all 3 films. All 3 films inspired almost every scary Sci-Fi movie we have these days

The 2011 "remake" of this movie is actually a prequel. This movie started off with a helicopter chasing the dog trying to shoot it and kill it. The 2011 movie ends with that scene. It deals with the origin of the creature and how it got here.

I’ve always loved this movie, and the game was fun with the trust mechanics.
