My mom used to put a small sweet potato in water into a large mouth quart jar then she would put the jar in a window seal the slips would start to grow out of the small sweet potato she would then break the slips off and put them into another jar of water and they would start growing good roots then when it was time to plant them we would get them out of the jar and plant them with a good established root system we always had good results doing them this way.
My gdad and myself used to dig a sweet potato clamp to store them through the winter. Dig a hole about 3 to 4 ft deep about 4 ft wide. Lay down a layer of straw, then line your potatoes up but don't let them touch,another layer of straw then a layer of potatoes on and on till you get close to the top of the hole, mound up the straw on top cut a hole in a piece of plastic sheet big enough to cover the mound and allow the straw to peak out of the hole in the plastic, and cover the mound with dirt leaving the straw sticking out the top. They will last through the winter like that.

I just received my Beauregard sweet potato slips today. Thank You Hoss! My husband love my sweet potato breakfast hash recipe. This is my first time planting sweet potatoes so I really appreciate all the tips I can get. I put them a a container of water for a few minutes and planted them in a container of potting soil to get the roots to take off before I plant them out. I'm just treating them like a bare root plant that I would receive in the mail to give them a little head start. I'm keeping them in the shade for now until they get adjusted

My family used to grow sweet potatoes in the 80s and 90s as large-scale market gardeners. We usually just gently pulled the potato plant (we called draws) out of the dirt/off of the potato and it would already have roots on the bottom. Of course, when they got too long, we would cut the vine in half and plant both halves.

Put a few sweet potatoes in your smoker. The smoked "baked" sweet potatoes with butter and honey or the butter and cinnamon are awesome!

I live in Cullman, Alabama and I feel like nobody knows how good honey is on sweet potatoes. At least nobody my age.

I grew sweet potatoes when I was in IN, up there you more have to rely on the temp forecast for harvesting. If there is a frost forecast get them taters out of the ground. I did well growing them but you have to push it on both ends of the season.

Sweet taters are about the best crop around
1. Grow when most things don’t grow in heat
2. Stores for at least a year if you keep them in a root cellar
3. Don’t require great soil - low maintenance
@Uncle Charlie that’s fine I disc my plot so 3-4 inches is fine. I get slips from steel plant company and plant them with a metal stick. Poke a deep hole and drop them in there

Is there a variety that's closest to the Jewel and Garnet sweet potatoes that are typically marketed as organic in grocery stores? They are the best that I've tasted -- much better than the generic sweet potatoes. I know it's too late in the season to start slips from the grocery store variety.

Mmmmm, candied sweet taters. Lotsa butter and brown sugar. Our Piggly Wiggly keeps them year round so we don't have to wait until Thanksgiving to enjoy them.
I started mine a few days ago. I'm going a different route this time. I am growing 1 slip per 10 gallon grow bag. The squirrels are such tater thief's, I'm hoping that putting net over them will help keep them out of my taters!

I got some of the 15 gallon grow bags you sell and I am wondering if they would be suitable to use for planting sweet potato slips into. If so, how many slips would you suggest per 15 gallon bag?
I would think the 15 gallon would be too small. If you give it a try only 1 to a bag.
Another tip/trick in a city area. Asian markets have sweet potato vines/slips they use for cooking you can root those out and you'll get like 50 slips f0r like $2. Its usually a white sweet potato...fine with me at that price. ;)

We store under our barn with out onions and garlic. Keep them cool and dry.

lately , when I buy organic sweet potatoes or and yams, I cant get them to sprout shoots. They are either getting nuked because they are imported or being sprayed with a chemical to stop sprouting...really upset. Never had problem getting slips before. Great content, thank you
I tried this for the first time a few months ago, and most of mine are growing like crazy.
I’m having the same problem. I bought mine in the organic section at Walmart. Absolutely will not sprout. I’m now not convinced they are actually organic🤷♀️.
@@LittleCountryCabin I don't know the secret, but maybe it's smart to buy yours from different sources. I don't remember where mine came from.
Maybe Sprout's, Walmart, I also shop at Asian markets - they have interesting things there.
I put mine in jars on top of the fridge, which does not get direct sunlight, but I don't know if that matters either. I think that freshness does matter - if they dry out completely I don't they will re-grow. The fresher ones make roots quickly. Make sure you have the root end in the water, as opposed to the stalk end, or whatever you call it.

It will kill bees.
Use PyGanic. It’s organic. Spray directly on the pests. Best to spray late evening.

QUESTION: any one, if you know the answer: Why transplant "only sprouted part ie. rooted slip" as opposed to planting "sprout/slip that is still attached to piece of sweet potato"? In other words, cut piece of sweet potato with a slip on it?

@@gardeningwithhoss I have a Bristol cucumber plant, I got the seed from you,it is a wonderful cucumber and it has a few white and yellow blooms on same bloom I can send a pic if you like by the way my other cucumber seed I got from are kicking but, maxpac,gerkiin and eureka
