Some people think it's 2 others think it's 4 some would argue more. Here is why I am right on how many seed potatoes you should use in containers.

I bought some Oakland buckets last year, and container growing not only beat the socks off yields grown in the ground - they were safer from mouse damage too.

Last year, I grew First and Second Earlies in Oakland buckets, following Tony's method exactly, and had the best crop ever. First few buckets in the greenhouse, before the space was needed, and then moved outside with the remainder. I'll be doing some second-cropping in the autumn this year as well, when the greenhouse toms etc. are finished.

@Yoyoyo it's those tubs that Tony is emptying. They are supplied by Oakland Gardens, other places sell them - or something similar - but the often have a good deal on them. Bought some from them last year and very pleased with the crop. A lot easier than having to dig them up too :)

@Yoyoyo he doesn't sell them if that's what you meant he just recommends them. I've got 50 of them from his recommendation and there fantastic, light enough that I can still move them when full I've used bigger bags before and couldn't but heavy duty so they don't bend or crack ect. My whole family have been eating potatoes we grew in them from August to now and I'm just at the point I'm going to put them on shepherds pies in the freezer to use them up but otherwise I'd have enough for at least another month. I have a health condition and don't have enough space in my garden so wouldn't have been able to grown that many in the ground.

Last year we followed your advise and grew Delicatessen earlies and Desiree. We had a good crop of very good spuds, they didn't get to be very big. They died down fairly early, Delicatessen were ready in 55 days when they were supposed to go to 75 days and Desiree around 85 days when they were not due until 115 days. We put it down to a heat wave.
Seed potatoes ordered, looking forward to the new season. Thanks again

Your videos are always a treasure, and watching you harvest your potatoes is so enjoyable. This year, my early potatoes are in a new raised bed, filled as I planted them, but I have 4 more pounds of potatoes on the way, which will be going half in buckets and half in the ground to see which works best in our yard. Your bucket growing methods are definitely enticing. I just don't quite have enough potting mix or compost to do as many buckets this year. I'll definitely try it out with what I have, though. Thank you for all the great advice.

I plant 4 seed pieces per square foot in the ground. I am in Toronto, Canada. I've gotten 4.75 pounds from 3 layers (7 seeds) in a 5gal HomeDepot bucket. I grew 14 indeterminates in a 16gal recycling bin and got 10.75 pounds.
The main thing to keep in mind is that the foliage gets large and your maximum planting density will be limited by the hours of sunlight you get. If you get a lot (like me), then a little bit of coverage is fine. If you don't get enough, the yield will be reduced.
Also, no matter what, in order for potatoes to grow, you need nutrients. If you are adding fertilizer (organic or chemical), denser is okay. If not, keep them apart to reduce nutrient competition.

Hello Philip, I live in the interior of BC in the Selkirk or Kootenays. I’m growing in containers for the first time and trying a variety of spuds. I’m trying Warba, Bintje, Norland, Yukon Gold, French Fingerling, and Prince of Orange, a relatively new variety. I’ve got 22 L and 31 L pots (5 and 7 gallons Canadian respectively). For the life of me I can’t find out which will grow in layers (determinate) and which won’t. You sound like a spud master so I would like to ask if you know about these spuds or can direct me to a site beyond the sellers’ descriptions that will help me. If not, that’s fine too…. Does it help that I love Toronto? 👍🇨🇦❤️

    • @theurzamachine
      @theurzamachine 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@francesbatycki404 Hi Frances. You have to figure out which varieties are determinate (yields less in a single layer) and which are indeterminates (yields more but needs more space). Both can be used to grow in multiple layers but the major issue is that if you have an indeterminate on the upper layers, you will need more soil to cover the tubers to prevent them from greening.
If it doesn't really matter to you, I would give 4 inches of vertical space between the layers. If your upper most layer is determinate, cover with at least 4 inches of soil. If it's indeterminate, cover with at least 6 inches of soil.
Also, use larger seed potatoes in the lower layers as they will require more energy to reach the surface.
All I really am familiar with are Yukon Golds and Norlands which are fast growing. If I were you, I would plant 2 layers of the others (assume they are indeterminate) and then one more upper layer of either Norland or Yukon Gold. The upper most layers of Yukon Gold or Norland will mature fast which means you can harvest them without disturbing the bottom layers.

One thing I learned last year is that you can grow potatoes in pots from just a small piece of spout, while eating most of the potato. Most don't grow big but a small potato is as good; if you already have buckets and compost, you can grow them for free. I grew both determinate and indeterminate. I will be starting some indoors today since the snow is quite deep and the temperature way below freezing, add to that the strong winds in this area. (North Minnesota, US) With the wind, it feels -20 F (-28.9 C). Will take them out when it's not freeze to death temps. Big fan!

I took notes this time. I finally understand! Still can’t find potato fertilizer and even finding one with the correct NPK percentages is almost impossible. I found one on Amazon that you can add the ingredients together yourself. I can keep the N low and adjust the P & K. Seems like the only choice I have. Nobody sells Blood, Bone and fish meal, either.

Spot on information. Unfortunately many sources of information do not distinguish between early and main crop. I believe it to be an honest mistake that is just not known. I've newly learned it myself. First year I grew in containers I made the mistake of planting earlys and only in the bottom level of container. I did indeed not utilize the container properly and lost out on lots of growing space. This will be my first year of growing main crop. Last year was three early varieties in the ground. I look forward to a large harvest of German Butterball. Thanks for your accuracy!

That's pretty handy for me since I grow about 70kg of potatoes altogether and I can only dig out few kilos for cooking and come later for more.
