Sweet Potato Harvest Time w/ Everyone's Favorite Market Gardener!

  • Our favorite market gardener Is back! & we caught up with him just as he is harvesting his sweet potato cover crop.
Jim Kovaleski is known for growing vegetables & fruits year-round for the farmers' markets of the Tampa Bay area of Florida & coastal Maine. He has been a long-time inspiration for so many other growers, and his customers just adore him & his produce. In this latest update, we share the abundant harvest from Jim's front-yard urban farm at the end of its summer resting period. The sweet potatoes are coming out & the next season of veggies are on the way!
Because Jim is gone the entire summer, leaving his Florida farm to rest during the hot, rainy (humid) conditions, he uses the sweet potatoes, along with cowpeas (black-eyed peas) as a cover crop to keep his soil shaded for coolness/moisture retention & keeps weeds away without the need for chemicals.
From now until April, you can join Jim & the other vendors at the Tasty Tuesday Farmers Market in New Port Richey, FL, every Tuesday at the Main Street Library from 10am - 1pm.

My husband would come out back to check on me. He'd yell how you doing out there? And I'd pop out covered with dirt, hold my hands up and just smile. He knew I was fine. When my boss, years ago, asked me where I'm going on vacation I answered my back yard. Some people don't get it.

I'm not sure my first comment went through so I'll abbreviate this one. . . yeah I was wondering if he mono cropped sweet potatoes how he is recovering. He said 80 yards of mulch a year, that's quite a load to move. So he didn't have any cover crops interplanted with those sweet potatoes? I love seeing how people are doing this and learning how I can do it for my family in the future. If I can manage to feed us 90% of our needs I'll be really excited
