I got a question, why is there that specific “beep” sound at the end of a radio transmission every time Houston and Apollo use the radio. Is there a specific reason they use that sound or is it just a noise that is easily identifiable.
Quindar tones - basically communication worked over dedicated phone lines between the tracking stations and mission control. Quindar comes from the company that produced the system. They were used as a way to only need one phone line but do voice and control on a single line (versus separate lines for control and voice). The intro tone signals to unmute the audio, then an outro tone signals to mute the audio. IIRC, the system was also used in Shuttle though I'm not sure the introduction of the TDRS tracking stations changed the system at all.

It does bother me that they couldn't correct the roll to make Ed's throw easier. It's normally disabled while the SM is connected, but there's no reason you can't use it here. It wouldn't be super efficient, since it isn't designed for use with the altered center of gravity and additional mass of the connected SM, but if the alternative is drifting off uncontrollably into space...
True, this is certainly possible, but it can be explained away with NASA didn't have time to work out the procedure since they only have a tight window for rescue.
Why didn't they dock and use the LSAM's engine to do the burn instead? Seems like that would have been less risky, but I guess there is a reason they couldn't as the clip starts in the middle of a conversation about docking

@@archie2591 In reality the odds would be horrible; a "death and death situation". I thought it was getting outrageous already when he threw the tank, eyeballing the timing, force and angle. And angle also is pretty simply, there's not an arc, it's gonna go in a straight line from where you push it. And given he MISSED, he didn't actually get the angle completely right. So really he just got the timing right, and yeah it's a longshot, but not like something implausible. Again, not good odds at all, but it's not like unfathomable to get the timing right given his experience.
In hind sight, they should have kept the LEM when they separated from S-IVB. However, it is possible that they did take LEM with them for deceleration, but is still short of fuel. In the scene that shows them turning the spacecraft around for deceleration, S-IVB stage is not seen, it is likely that the LEM had already been expended for deceleration. Since even if they keep the LEM and expend all propellant in descent stage and ascent stage, they can only get at most 844m/s of delta-v. because then she might not have been in the proper orientation to catch it, because the capsule was rotating. The slower he threw it the greater the chance for an error where the tank just bounced off the side of the capsule and carried on its way, or worse, breached the capsule.
„This is my call, I’m in command here. You can either stay out of my way or you can fuck right off, those are your options. CAPCOM, let’s go” The most badass line I heard in a while
I think in S3 someone needs to remind Molly's blind in more ways than one ass about this LEGENDARY audible Margot called.. pencil pusher my perfectly formed ass 😑
I remarked by the primitive technology used in out space program. How that technology to use an accurate analogy is like a better and better version of an old wooden sailing ship. 1957 Sputnik was launched, 65 years later we still haven't landed a human on Mars nor built a moon station. It's likely that our space program will turn 75 before we reach Mars or have functioning lunar colony. I will be long gone from this earth and with me the rest of humanity. Some of our satellites will be up there for centuries as a testament. That we flew to high for our wings to survive.
I still wonder why they were not closer. Maybe they couldn't dock, but they could have got close enough to just hand over the tanks... Less risky than throwing at 100 meters...
Enjoying the show. I realise dramatic storytelling is point here but problem of realism here for me is ...the lunar module vehicle is not out of fuel so could have coupled ...or pressed up against...CM and burn to trim CM orbit or, at very least, maneouvred itself much closer so didnt have to throw from a mile away.
I just saw somewhere that Season 5 was just approved. And there will be a spinoff called Star City, which details the Russian program before they reached the moon.
I only know this show from TH-cam clips and I don't know whether I can stomach a space that actually kills you. I wan't the Star Trek kinda space, that is only sort of lethal when the plot demands it.

The hatch, or crawl tube as you put it, wasn't made for EVA, and could not fit an Astronaut in a full PLSS suit (the ones used on EVA for the Apollo missions) plus there's also the Probe system there, and that's needed for docking.
@@photon9682 the probe was designed for hand removal, but if the transfer tube is too small for the a suited astronaut then that is moot. Thank you for that info. :)
if they really needed to they could fly the LEM to within inches of the CSM as the two in real life did when docking and there were provisions for docking with an unresponsive csm
I think the issue here is that the CSM wasn't properly in lunar orbit and the LSM was at the edge of it's fuel envelope, accounting for needing sufficient fuel to land again safely and enough to transfer to the CSM so they could correct their orbit after the fact, so this was the closest approach they could make, given the situation. I know that's not a perfect explanation, but that's what the series explained.

Why did he throw it so fast? Surely if he threw it with like half the power it would be easier to correct for even if something goes wrong
because then she might not have been in the proper orientation to catch it, because the capsule was rotating. The slower he threw it the greater the chance for an error where the tank just bounced off the side of the capsule and carried on its way, or worse, breached the capsule.
@@dsdy1205 well if he threw it slow enough there would have been multiple windows where the thing would be in reach
"this is my command, so you can either stay out of my way or fuck right off, those are your options." I seriously huffed at that.
Yeah, it looks like a real cringefest.
You earned a sub
This show is pretty baggy but when it gets going it's exceptional.
I’m a bit peeved that Ellen goes into a spin and that, by grabbing onto the tank, she magically cancels out her angular momentum
Great "TV SCREEN" show ☑️😁👌🏻
Wow. Intense. So cool. Semper Fi
What’s the music used in this scene called? Can we get it somehow?

This is up there with the "I GOT HIM" from The Martian :)
These first few seasons were pretty darn good. Jealous of people who get to discover this show years later.
Does anybody know what song is playing as they're preparing for the throw?
Pretty sure it’s “Landing” in the official soundtrack, but the orchestral after she catches the tank isn’t in the soundtrack :(
„This is my call, I’m in command here. You can either stay out of my way or you can fuck right off, those are your options. CAPCOM, let’s go”
The most badass line I heard in a while
I think in S3 someone needs to remind Molly's blind in more ways than one ass about this LEGENDARY audible Margot called.. pencil pusher my perfectly formed ass 😑
if this were even close to reality it would be the end of any space program whatsoever.
This is how our teacher creates problems in physics
cant wait for 2024 and the real deal
Couldn't Ed have gotten quite a bit closer though?
What was that thing he threw to her?
Fuel canister I believe, so Apollo 24 can adjust their trajectory to slingshot back to earth
A Tank of fuel so Deke and Ed can return home
@@Panzermeister36 thanks

Just realized these MF'ers have the bottom landing legs. Those stay on the moon, not come with. The lander is two stage. Descent and Ascent.
Was really hoping for an interstellar docking scene lmfao
This is how it should have been. Instead, we have a "shell" of what NASA was.
wait, they were gonna dock?
on that rapidly spinning spacecraft?
they were gonna do an interstellar?
Thank God for strong independent women in charge!
Your sausage party can wait.
That we flew to high for our wings to survive.
some episodes its hard to tell who are the good guys, love the series, on my third time thru
That is a hail mary that will be talked about for centuries.
I still wonder why they were not closer. Maybe they couldn't dock, but they could have got close enough to just hand over the tanks... Less risky than throwing at 100 meters...
requires fuel
Enjoying the show. I realise dramatic storytelling is point here but problem of realism here for me is ...the lunar module vehicle is not out of fuel so could have coupled ...or pressed up against...CM and burn to trim CM orbit or, at very least, maneouvred itself much closer so didnt have to throw from a mile away.
Equal and opposite reaction: He's also propelled the LM in the opposite direction.
Bearly but yes that technically the truth
As soon as she went after it ... she would have never caught it in reality lol.
If one day you became an astronaut do not belive you can pull of stunts like this!
I want to watch this show so bad!!
Unfortunately it's on the one streaming service that requires one particular brand of TV so I can't watch it. Screw you Apple!!!
Internet is there
It is sci fi for so many reasons to list. I don't even mean throwing and catching tanks in space and a cheap suspense
Going out the crawl tube would have put her in a more stationary spot where she would have had constant visual of the projectile. Just saying.
Die meiner Meinung nach beste SiFi Serie überhaupt und wenn dann kommt nur die unrealistische Serie "The Expanse" nahe dran.
where can i watch this?
