  • The 1896 Aberystwyth Cliff Funicular Railway or Rheilffordd Y Graig is the second longest in the UK. It takes passengers up the 430 feet or 130 metres high Constitution Hill along 778 feet or 237 metres of double track 4ft 8in gauge line. From 1896 until 1921 a water balance system was used and each carriage had a 4 tonne tank of water with a steam pump filling the tank of the uppermost carriage whilst the lower carriage's tank had been emptied. In 1921 a powerful electric motor replaced this system.
On top of Constitution Hill is the Luna Park with a restaurant, camera lucida and other attractions. The speed is 4mph and the maximum gradient is 1:2 or 50%. A cutting was quarried out to instal the line and 12,000 tonnes of rock removed.
