  • Ascensore Montegalletto Funicular Railway. " Transformer " Design. Probably the most unique form of Underground Railway transport in the world !
    This is a Underground Narrow Gauge Railway that " Transforms " into a Lift/Elevator. Although the ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto is called a Funicular railway the attraction is there for anyone that enjoys the experience of riding something a little bit different. Genoa in Italy has a handful of Funiculars that transport passengers to the top of the mountain. They are all different and they are all an interesting ride !
    The ascensore castello d'albertis-montegalletto underground railway runs directly into the heart of the mountain for 236 metres, transforms, and then goes vertical 69 metrers up to street level just outside the Castello d'Albertis. The engineering is very interesting and it must have been very brave of the design team to propose such a challenging design. Well Done ! ! !
    Certainly a minor tourist attraction for Genoa Tourism, as also, the views are magnificent from the grounds of the castle.

    As a little boy, I used to imagine a huge complex of buildings connected by elevators that ran both vertically and horizontally. Haven't known anything like that existed in real world until watching this

      Dear perry mac, Thank you for commenting, Yes, this system of transport certainly is a most important example of how to combine the best of two technologies, funicular and elevator. All the informed comments that have gone before have, in essence, agreed that WHY? have other cities, or within company buildings, not tried this combination of engineering techniques? I can only think that it is how left and right hand are thinking with their different mind sets and that it is difficult for the two engineering cultures to come together to propose solutions to projects that could benefit from this type of package. I can't wait for the next project along these lines to be announced as it certainly will create an absolute sensation in the transport business world. Very best wishes to you and thank you for your contribution to WooWooMad.

      Dear Matthew Plato, Yes, it certainly is, especially at the moment when the pit of everyone's stomach changes direction for the upward journey. But in truth, the invention of such a clever system of transport is exactly what is needed for such a hilly city. Do check if the ride is running when you make a trip there as I do believe there has been a few maintenance problems. However, there are other interesting funiculars to ride in the city and it is also a lovely and historic place to visit for a holiday. • @WooWooMad
      @WooWooMad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dear mailerdiablo, Yes, you may well be correct, but the beauty of this project is that it appears that the local engineers have come up with the solution to the particular requirements of the situation. They have taken all the best from different known and tested technologies and systems and produced a package that works extremely well. The marriage of funicular and elevator engineering is possibly quite straight forward but they had the foresight to try it. The possibilities that this package can offer, I believe, is absolutely enormous when use in the appropriate circumstances. Individual vehicles could be switched to selected work places and even to the correct floor of a building. This is only a first viewing of this system but if a project was thought out around this package it could start to radically redesign some of the major cities metro systems. I don't think that is an unreasonable assessment. Very best wishes and thank you for contributing to WooWooMad.

    • @sgbuses
      @sgbuses 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting that you are thinking in terms of railways, because I was thinking more of the potential application in a large building. That is certainly possible but it will be challenge for the vertical system to lift several tonnes of metro cars, not to mention the safe overrun distance required (there isn't any here).

    • @WooWooMad
      @WooWooMad  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dear mailerdiablo, Thanks for the prompt reply. This week I have just returned from Japan and had a good look around there. What a Place ! ! ! It is just that they are all thinking in a very fresh and interesting way. They change sizes, shapes and methods and it is very pleasing to see! The first question is, why would a metro car be so big and weigh several tonnes? Small "packages" of small vehicles could go in the general direction required and then split to the final destination. I really mean a radical new way of thinking will need to be attempted to take advantage of these possibilities that this system offers. I just hope that some company out there takes up the challenge and installs the next chapter in this story. Very best wishes, WooWooMad.

      Ahead of its time how? 'Cause NYC had this before they built the first subway and was called Beach Pneumatic Transit. The only difference is that it didn't go up vertically, but the rest is the same.

    • @PlatinumEagleStudios
      @PlatinumEagleStudios 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes. And make it elevator-like where the inside of the cars would look similar to elevator cabs with buttons for different destinations. Also they should make a high speed model that travels at like 60 KM an hour for faster arrival times.

  • @SalocinDotTEN
    @SalocinDotTEN 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I think Otis elevator had this idea for the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. The lifts would travel horizontally from the carpark into the towers and brought up to split at the aerobridge.
    Although it seems that idea was never attempted and the lifts are now just simple double decker lifts.

    • @WooWooMad
      @WooWooMad  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Salocin Dot TEN Dear Salocin Dot TEN, Thank you, now that is really interesting! I didn't know about that project. Possibly the fooling about when uncoupling a line of coaches and then to go into transition for the lift was too much to contemplate. The beauty of this project is that it has been kept very simple. When one visits it just appears from the hardware that there must have been a funicular project team and a lift specialist project team. Both teams knew exactly what they were doing in their own world and so the project works like a dream ! Keeping to the one coach at a time seems obvious for simplicity. Hopefully, somewhere there will be a further project attempted along these lines in the near future. This is not rocket science complexity and if used sensibly in the correct context the advantages of this type of system could certainly be quite impressive. Very best wishes and thank you again for your contribution to WooWooMad.

      +StarWarsTrains Dear StarWarsTrains, Yes, Absolutely, This is the big, big question about this form of transport. Suddenly someone has had the common sense to use existing ( relatively inexpensive ) technologies to solve a problem for which a traditional funicular arrangement would be prohibitively expensive. If one quietly sits and thinks about the immense possibilities that have been " stumbled " upon by the construction of this railway it must make anyone with a railway interest wonder why it hasn't been jumped on as a format to introduce elsewhere. For instance, I ( humbly ) suggest, carriages on metros systems that could be brought to street level. Maybe to continue on a surface system. Or, carriages that could be dedicated to particular tower blocks, so that the vehicle could arrive at, say the 10th floor. There does seem like quite a lot of possibilities here that could be explored. Maybe there is someone out there in TH-cam land that will build something even more exciting.
      Thank you very much for letting me get that off my chest ! Very best Wishes, WooWooMad.

As I have stated in previous responses to comments, the possibilities that this package of engineering has opened up has not even been fully explored. Company specific vehicles, remote entry points to buildings, difficult terrain, airport specific requirements. There must be someone out there to get the ball rolling and design something exciting, for when one sits quietly and starts to think seriously about what this system could actually produce in terms of city communication it truly is exciting. Very best wishes to you and thank you for your contribution to WooWooMad.

      Dear TommyKx, Thank you for commenting on WoooWooMad. If you like metro buses and trolley buses do check out the trolley buses and trams in Lisbon and Porto. The fun one to travel on is tram 28 in Lisbon, but get to the stop early as it is a very popular ride. It's a crazy ride up the back of the town through very small streets. The other interesting routes that I find interesting are the trolley buses in Saint Petersburg in Russia as these beauties must have at least come from the 1950's . Istanbul is also a great and interesting place for metro and trolley buses. There is certainly a lot out there to see ! Very best wishes and thanks for viewing WooWooMad.

      Dear Trainzguy2472, Well, . . . Yes, sort of. The guys that have designed this though have really thought it out and used all established modern technologies and have produced a great design for use in an urban location. This would be great to use to arrive direct to the departure lounge at an airport. Possibly to arrive in the city direct to the correct floor where the company operates. There are many other opportunities that come to mind. I just hope that there are designers out there that can put this design package into operation to the benefit of travellers. Thanks for the very interesting comment. Very best wishes to you and your channel. WooWooMad.

      gasmath I had the same thought. It appears to operate in similar way to the Tower of Terror in that a vehicle moves laterally (in this case the "car", in the case of ToT the ride vehicle) and that enters a "cage" to move it vertically. ToT shows, in a way, how this sort of system can be more extensive than this particular one.
