Don Shipley Jr (devgru) says it really well on his Sean Ryan ep. He says his buddy was begging him to stop cranking that windlass but he couldn’t. It probably depends on blood pressure, too, right?
@@PeterRSCFF I’d say no mater what if you have a significant bleed and it’s on an extremity slap one on. There was a myth that any application of a tourniquet would damage the limb. Two decades of data shows otherwise. It comes down to skill sets and levels. The higher your skill set the more options are open to you (wound packing, actually ligating bleeders you can ID, etc). In the end I’d rather cause some pain than have a funeral. That’s a long winded way of saying yes but….. the idea behind keeping a minimum blood pressure has to do with o even perfusion to your vital organs. Back in the day they would bring someone back from the brink of death to have them die of end organ failure 2 days later. Your body has a natural compensation mechanism that keeps those organs alive. They basically hibernate when you lose a bunch of blood. If you get to aggressive in fluid therapy you can literally kill them later. So keep the red stuff inside. Tourniquet good. Don’t worry about blood pressure unless you’re looking to be in emergency medicine in some way. Lastly, crank on the tourniquet until previously mentioned red stuff stops coming out. You’re not worried about limb survival. Most of that’s a myth and a good vascular or trauma surgeon will take care of any issues from the use of the tourniquet. Which of your using a CAT or other commercial device will be minimal. Sorry this was so damn long.
@@sambaggins2798 Thanks, man. Great info. I just meant that if blood pressure is elevated, it might take more pressure to stop. I wasn’t advocating taking a BP reading in the field!
@@PeterRSCFF it really doesn’t matter. Once you have leaks, the blood pressure is going South. Your biggest worry at your level is stop the bleeding. The more blood you leave inside the better the long term survival odds.
I work in EMS, I’ve used both. Definitely prefer the CAT. But if you’re not working in a professional setting like healthcare law enforcement, military. The best Tourniquet is the one you carry.
This is the 4th TQ video I’ve seen in 5 minutes. I’m working a 24 with a lot of stuff to do on my days off starting tomorrow. I better not run a bad call tonight Mike.
As a paramedic I’ll say for your ifak you should 1000% use a cat, but to have a small back up or even pocket tourniquet sof-t is amazing. These new racheting ones I don’t feel have enough research done for me to say go ahead and bet a life on it. But cat and sof-t are the 2 I’d recommend.
SOFT Wide tourniquets are the best in general. I have used both CAT and SOFT tourniquets on actual patients and in training many times. The SOFT is the easiest to apply. The CAT works well, but the SOFT is better. The SOFT are also easier to store and cary when you flat fold them. I cary a SOFT for my EDC. I only cary a CAT when I'm going to a place with metal detectors.
I carry one just like that . Have never used it luckily but I do take my kids to the range with me often. I just make sure they know how to use it as well .
If you're using it for training, it's not the best for real use. Every time you cinch it you're weakening the lattice and interior tension strap. Buy a second one for practice and your range kit. Keep the unused one as unused until you need it.
@@RogerCharlamange I have a training one as well. The ones I carry in the car or in my range bag are new . But yes you are right , the first one I got years ago I played with it enough to notice the degradation. Further reinforced from a class I took a few years ago.
@@tizbenProbably in a situation with a child or someone with a very thin limb, last thing you want is to have the windlass stop turning and the wound still be bleeding
@@tizben yes. If you put the CAT on loose initially, you can crank the windless untill it stops and not have pressure. The soft-w you can keep turning. Mainly tjo, get it super tight before turning and youll be good with either

As an 18D I always found it funny people never realized how much tourniquets hurt when used right. If you ever have one applied, it will wake you up.

The best EDC TQ is the Snakestaff Systems ETQ. I love that thing.

SOF-T best in our opinion no doubt
Soft-w is the best. And the windless doesn't stop tightening, unlike a CAT. You can turn the windless forever on soft-w
